I was flipping through the current runs in the Gamecube section, but was surprised to find no one has done anything for MK: DD yet. And now I ask: Why not? I mean, it is one of the top MK games out there, and I think I speak for everyone when I say we'd like to see some pros whup staff ghost ass.

So please, someone see my topic and at least think about doing a few runs for this great game.

Cheers,

Kowbrainz.

There are plenty of time trial vid's of MKDD, they're just not on this site. Try http://www.mariokart64.com/mkdd/vids.php.

This is probably because most people don't consider racing games suitable for speed runs.  If the point of the game is to get done as fast as possible, then where's the excitement when it gets done fast?

That's not to say that these videos aren't deserving, they can be just as amazing, but they can't really be considered speed runs, and thus most don't make it to this site.

There would be vids up if someone sent the runs here. Nobody (us and them) have bothered going through the process of putting them up here yet.
^DragonGod:

There are some race videos.

Someone has been talking about putting up a run of the MKDD All-Cup Tour.  The times they've been talking about have been 29:07 and 28:55.  That would be awesome to watch.

Woah, this post is really odd...

Racing games are pretty much one of the best possible examples as speed runs. The whole point of these runs is to get incredibly fast times, wich is basically what racing games are. The exitement in it is that each run is done at extremely great times that barely anybody can match, and even if somebody does match or beat them, it would porbably take hours upon hours just to get it down one or two seconds.

How can they not be considered as speed runs? My head is acking at the though of it... :/

And there are already
couple of them
, by the way.

I know that there are some, that's why I said "most" don't make it here.

What I'm trying to say is that the term "Speed Run" (to me at least) refers to beating a game as fast as possible by doing things that weren't considered by the developers or by other gamers, and by a demonstration of extreme skill and mastery of the game by the runner.

Racing games only satisfy the latter of these conditions (especially cause you're rarely 'beating' a racing game).  I'm not saying that these videos don't deserve a home, but because they kinda deviate from the standard view of a speed run, they usually end up somewhere else (aka Time Trial sites like the one linked above).

That being said, I'm not arguing that someone shouldn't do some time trials, only answering the poster's original question of 'why not?'

Though I will say, an All Cup tour of DD would be more enjoyable, it's kind of boring to watch a person do a lap around a track by themselves without items (well, I guess you get some mushrooms).

You'd need the permission of the runner.
Hey,

Im Stephen Meakings the guy who has done the taped 28:55 and 29:02 (I think thats the time) MKDD ACT runs.

The 29:02 run was captured ages ago in .wmv format without sound, becuase of problems with my capture card.

The 28:55 run has been sent to a friend who's capture card works and that will be uploaded in .avi format any day now. Hopefully then the video will get accpeted onto this site!

If you want to watch the 29:02 run you can download it from here:

The consitentcy in an ACT is so difficult, for me anyhow. Especially as you have 7 computer players trying to hit you every second (plus my driving isnt the best on some), which is why im disappointed with a few courses. One day I may play again and aim for a mid to low 28 minute time!

Anyway enough for now, cheers and hopefully enjoy this vid for now!

Steve
Sorry here is the correct link:

Sweet.  Thanks!

Oo, ouch, the file doesn't seem available anymore (but I've seen it anyway, so it doesn't matter).

Yousendit has a bandwidth limit and 1-week expiration. Maybe (for future, at least) you could ask Ngamer to hold it for you, Steve.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I would like to see this video, I was just about to cap my efforts today or tommorow.  I have times of 29:15-29:40 right now but would like to see how you are taking the extra time off.

Does anyone have a working link to that time.  Either or, the no sound or not.  I played a lot, but could never get lower than 32, i want to see the tricks i never found.

With the WS shortcut, I am not that confident in executing it. If I was to try it I may end up losing more time than if I wasnt to try it. I may practise it a bit and add it in if I ever try again!

Heres the video again:

OMG, it took me like, 20 minutes to find the download button amongst all the adversitements. Geez!

Edit - Audio? I didn't hear anything.
Who doesn't love YaBB 1G - SP1!
He mentioned there is no sound, he captured the run himself and couldn't get it to work. I think a friend of him is now taking care of the tape and making a vid. If that doesn't work out I hope steve's going to send the tape to Nate. I really want to see this run.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
How about the BC shortcut?  That could save a ton of time... you just need to get a bomb or blue shell or whatnot, if you need  a vid, let me know.
Take This! Ultra Frisbee-Disk Attack!
This will be one of my future runs. I will do All Cup Tour 150CC. I will probably do this after a few of my other runs are completed first.
