Hey, im a long time reader, but first time poster.  I play a lot of games, but I am not AMAZING at a lot of games.  Mario Kart DD is a game i feel i am fairly talented at, not really with time trials, but with gran prix.  Me and my friend play competitivley, and my current record is 32:52.  Im just wondering if that is anywhere near other peoples times, but if I am low, i think i will give it a shot.  Of course i would get 160 points, aka first place on every race.  My character choices are Toad and Paratroopa in toads kart.  Let me know guys, any advice would help.

That's odd, paratroppa and toad? Wouldn't Toad and Toadette suit better for their amazingly broken special occuring more often?

Also, do you just remain 1st place the whole time, or purposely lack just enough to get a special then zoom ahead and remain ahead? I havn't played in a while, and don't remember which was faster.
Men > Women
i got in first all the time, thats why i dont use toad and toadette, because the 3 shell special really helps with staying in first.  I always stay in first, however i never tested it in any other way.  it seems that you need to be in 4th place to get a star, maybe very very rarely in others.  Toads special for me is rare only beacsue i always stay first.

1. 32 minutes is fast, very fast.
2. If you could stay in first the WHOLE time, especially on 150CC, you have my praises.
3. It's about time someone run this bad boy.

I know there's a site out there with world records, and maybe a few videos. But I forget what it is. Anyone else know? Could be very helpful to this run.

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Meakings got 28:55.

Edit: I found the rankings page, it's http://gp.mkdd.free.fr/.  The record is 28'47"230, held by "Lyoa".  I think his real name is Jean Lecureux.
Quite a lot of ACT is up to chance, but the very top players can do sub-30 pretty much every attempt.

sub 29 seems like miles away, but ill keep trying.  If anyone can send a site with some WR's, just so i can see any shortcut i may have missed, i would appreciate it

hyperryuken:  You have my unadulterated enthusiasm by your side; this game has been without a speed demo for way too long.

My only advice is that the reason you are most likely not beating sub 29 is the paratroopa/toadette dilemma.  Granted, recruiting toadette does not mean that unlimited golden mushrooms wil be bestowed unto you, especially if you can remain in first place for the duration of the race, but I assume your odds of getting them are better than if not.  Some levels, like the baby mario level, will give you a chance to be amidst the middle of the pack without losing a lot of time, so maybe you can stock up there for longer levels that follow..?  Other than that, falling ranks during the race intentionally is the only other method I can recall.

Like I said earlier, in fact; that's the exact stuff I suggested in my previous post. Just Toad and Toadette, and experiment to see if lagging behind enough to get double special, hold it until you're way ahead of everyone around the start of the final lap; then abuse them like mad!!

Also, I remember someone mentioning a shortcut in Wario Stadium, a nondeveloper-intended one! [You] Should go check it out.
Toad and Paratroopa in toads kart is the best combo.
Forward standard-by-ten .
It's Waluigi Stadium, and it's very hard to pull off.

I always use Diddy and Bowser Jr., since they get their specials in first place and the specials help them keep it very, very well.
I recall seeing a video of this so called "Waluigi Stadium Trick"

Right after the pirahna plants, you go off the inner curve and boost with a mushroom. If you go at a good enough angle, you fly off and pretty high up. Lakitu grabs you and then places you in front of the starting line.

It went something like that. I've never gotten anywhere close to getting it to work though

you think you could get a hold of that video for me?

The WS SC saves about 2 seconds per lap (and loses you any items you're currently holding), so it's not worth it. Lagging behind and waiting, just to get a special item, seems like a pretty silly idea to me..

There is one place with an item will help you.. there's a shortcut in Bowser's Castle that skips half the race. It's just behind the starting line, so you probably won't pull it off on first lap. The idea is to get hit by an item and fly up into the air near the left side of the finish line.. Lakitu can pick you up since you went "out of bounds", but if you were high up he can respawn you on the road above.

I'm pretty sure that many of the sub-30 scores were done without the BC/WS shortcut or powerup abuse. Consider that since the Barrel Train is the fastest vehicle.. if you rarely get touched (perhaps the occasional blue shell), you don't need acceleration, and you only need to care about maintaining your speed. You need to have done a fair bit of timetrialing to know the quirks of where the MTs should go.

For WRs of individual levels, www.mariokart64.com/mkdd/vids.php has some links.

Never thought about the barrel train.  Maybe a rider that uses that "kart" and one of the shrooms?
Toad and Toadette can both ride in the barrel train, at the same time.

Wow, really?  I think I'm going to go dust off my copy of that game and give it a whirl before I say anything else imbecilic.
Dont the bigger cars get better speed once they get going? I thought that was the way it worked. Risky though...
PwNzRd!
You sacrifice top speed for acceleration and vice versa.
The speed difference between the fastest car and slowest car isn't very large. The Bowser King reaches 58mph, but it generally hangs around 57. The Barrel Train reaches 57. Light karts are about 56, I think.

The difference, though, is in mini turbos. The heavy karts are ghastly, and lose much ground on the BT.

For a ACT 150cc, a light kart may be an idea.. you'll get smacked around, probably, since the AI uses shells and lightning - recovery is important. But if you can get away with minimal smackage (could take some retries), BT is the way to go.
Men > Women
light cars are definatly the way to go, because in 150, theres so much shell/weapon/etc activity, that you need to be able to recover as fast as possible.  Even if you catch a nice lead, that horrible blue shell can ruin a race.  Im still working on this btw, i still play it a few times a week.  Although, sub 30 still seems impossible to me at this point, let alone the 27 minute record.

To the admin, anyway a sub 30 run would be accepted.  it is still an amazingly difficult task, although not the world record.  let me know.
Is there a way to consistently avoid the blue shells?  I've only dodged one once with a mini-turbo (on a turn,) and once on a dash pad.

Sometimes you don't get any, and sometimes they'll send 3 at you on one lap.  That's like 24 seconds.
Speed is the key.
One time I dodged a blue shell by jumping (in one of the ramps in DK mountain) and the shell went right under me and exploded in a cliff, but i was just lucky i guess.  Roll Eyes

It is possible to dodge a blue shell. I forget how it's done though, does anyone know?
