I'm guessing that if you take the other route in the aerial race once you land from the catapult, it may go faster?  Other than that, I don't know what else he could've done there, but maybe I'm just failing to see something else.
Yeah, we all know my brother could've been a little faster on the ultimate race, particularly with the black marble and with the bridges at the end, but I guess I'm just amazed that there is over 13 seconds worth of improvement in all that put together.  Is it that he never cuts corners?
Jungle Rat
Mengsk just plays nearly flawlessly. For example, he doesn't wait for the "wave" in the 3rd race. There are lots of places like that where a person can save a little time by taking some risks. It's possible to finish with 78 on the clock in the Ultimate Race so there's 9 seconds. I don't remember how much faster the "hard" path in the Aerial Race is, but I'd guess a couple of seconds there. Those things would get your brother down to the 3:00 flat range.

Here is the 305 video.

I think it takes advantage of the tricks used in the recent 2:51 emulator run

Those tricks include
Modifications for faster practice & beginner runs
Takes the faster route in Expert level (instead of the one used in our 3:13 run)
Goes through a wall in Aerial Level
Faster beginning of ultimate level and doesn't wait on the moving platforms.

There is an emulator run?  Where did you see this?
Jungle Rat
I've seen the emulator run. Someone told me about it after I did my high score run. It aims for speed and naturally looks nearly flawless. I'm pretty sure he didn't use the Silly Race shortcut though.

There was only one problem with the emulator run

If you go too far off the screen (too fast), the marble dies.

And if someone tries to go that fast, they'll have to be doing a BLIND run for about 5 seocnds which will be a headache to do.

Also, if the flag is reached too early, Twingalaxies may not recognize it as a record.

The silly shortcut may not be possible in the NES version.

Thanks, Sandbag29 for the descriptions.

Well, I still can't get that damn file to work, so I guess I'll have to forego it.  It doesn't matter, really, I just wanted to show my brother.

I'm still amazed that those modifications could shave 13 seconds, but I guess I've got to face the facts.  I doubt my brother will try to compete with you, Mengsk, so good luck doing the run, someday!

It is possible. I did it on my NES more than once. It's difficult to nail on your first try though. Generally, if I mess it up, I end up wasting more time than if I had just gone the long way.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I know keeping up with emulator runs is not a very high priority for most of you, but the TAS referred to in this thread is obsolete, and already was by the time these posts were made. The obsoleted TAS was really kind of bad; it was up there as far as TAS's needing improvement. The new one is much better, not as good as the Genesis one, but I can't remember if all the Genesis tricks can be done on the NES version anyway.

And I don't know why anyone wouldn't be able to get it to work. They have AVI encodes for all the published videos.

What is TAS?  Where do you see emulater times? I didnt even know this game was for genesis, what tricks do they use.

http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/ You can download avi's at this site.

TAS refers to runs made on emulators where they can be more precise than a human player could ever hope to be. Think of them more like demonstrations of what is theoretically possible than actual speedruns and you'll be fine.

Well, for one thing, the Genesis TAS skips the entire end portion of the final level by jumping down to the last platform.

How do you open a .fcm file?  I some of the programs on the site but i dont know what im doing.  I know I can cut 5 seconds on my time but will never be able to get that time.  Maybe my run can make it to SDA though.

An fcm file is a movie made in the FCEU emulator. To watch it, you need FCEU, the fcm, and the rom. Like I said before, it's easier (and legal) to just download the AVI that you can watch in the media player of your choice, just like any old video.

Also like I said, please don't compare your run with the TAS. These are not people playing normally on emulator. They are not even people playing on emulator, reloading if they make mistakes. They are dissecting the game a split second at a time, making close to perfect movements to create an obviously inhuman movie. There is no playing skill to be impressed at. This is only useful for you as either entertainment or a reference, to see if there are any tricks there that can be useful for you. Keep in mind that not everything they do will be useful for you; many tricks are too difficult for a human to perform consistently, and some are even impossible while playing on a real console.

Good luck on your run for SDA.

I figured it out, thanks. Ya that video was crazy, no way I produce those times in one run.  I still want to redo my run though.  I had lots of trouble with the hammers when they werent in patterns of 2 thats why i waited.  That purple dragon never happens i was shocked when it actually killed me, I played faster than my previous run though.  Those blurry lines are beyond me, I have no clue how they show up when i replay it.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
So i just got a 3:12 I think (the record at SDA is 3:13). Well, m y stopwatch timing of it was 3:12.9, so I'm not sure.

I plan to improve that before submitting. Reading through this old thread, it looks like my time isn't that great afterall.

I died 5 times, so I know it could be a lot better. I just need to practice levels 4 and 5 some more. I'd like to get under 3 minutes.
This is definitely a run which could be improved. I know I can do faster, but I don't have the game or system any more.

BTW, I don't think I've ever gotten a deathless run, but I know I've gotten 1 death for sure. Just to make sure, compared to the current run on SDA, you should:

1) take the other path on Aerial
2) criss-cross on the beginning part of Silly (instead of left left left etc, do left right left right etc)
3) take the shortcut on the ramp right after the birds on Silly

The biggest thing with the current run is really how deliberate it is, pretty strange when it comes to SDA.
Hi
To add to what Enhasa said:

Practice Race: Get ahead of the screen (play blind) to save 1, maybe 2, seconds.
Intermediate Race: Don't wait for the wave.
Ultimate Race: Don't be so cautious (yes, I'm stating the obvious).

And that Silly Race shortcut is a pain in the ass.  Maybe you'll have better luck with it than I've had, Andrew.

uh, heh, I just cannot do it. I haven't been able to do it once. I don't think I'm understanding the method of it. Best I've done on this game is 2 deaths. I almost had a deathless run once, but i ruined it on the last stage and kept dying.

Now that I may have beaten Frezy's smb3 time, I could start playing this game again. I think I tied it anyways, which is good enough for me for now.

I want sub 3:00 definately!!!! We could have a little competition if you'd all like to.

Yeah, Elliott has somewhat severe Asperger's syndrome and is pretty obsessive-compulsive.  I couldn't convince him to try other routes or to cut corners.  You can tell how much he prefers to remain in the middle of his paths...

Looking back on it, and having checked around the internet, I definitely see how this run could be somewhat easily improved.  Good luck to ya'll.

It's too bad me and scaryice don't have the game or the system anymore though. Sad

IMW: that's incredible because someone (I think LLCoolDave) asked about Marble Madness and I said, it reminds me a lot of the Comix Zone run. IMW's brother did it, and IMW said his brother had Asperger's and that it was hard to get him to take risks or shortcuts. LL said that was interesting, but what is truly interesting is that I didn't realize your brother also ran Marble Madness. Grin I just tied those runs together purely from gameplay.
I never particularly liked Marble Madness or Hamsterball because of the restrictions in skipping parts of the courses (dizyness, balls breaking apart etc.). I much prefer teh freedom of the classic Monkey Ball games.

So I very highly doubt I ever said anything about this game.

Wow, that's pretty cool.  Small world, huh?
Hi! I'm andrewg!
So today I beat Marble Madness in 3:07, BUT I had 4 deaths...

I died once from the wand stopping me at a very bad point, twice at that part in the silly race after the tube where the course is a bit glitched, and one more time at the end right after crossing the "blue area."

So basically 3 of the 4 deaths were due to glitches and one was because of a badly positioned angle.

So, I MAY submit this.
