I've been working on this for a while now, figured starting a thread for it might keep me from getting distracted so much. It's a freeware Ghosts n' Goblins homage that you can get here: http://www.locomalito.com/maldita_castilla.php

For now I mostly do any%, which skips stage 6 and gets the bad ending. My PB is an 18:22 in game time, which unfortunately isn't recorded. A lot of stuff in that run is really out of date though. I'm hoping to get a semi-decent run recorded soon that shows off all the new stuff. The biggest change is that I no longer switch to the axe in stage 5, and just stick with the sickle for Mendoza. You can damage boost behind him after the first axe throw and do the rest of the fight from there, which makes it much faster and cuts most of the weapon drop RNG out of the run.

I don't want this post to get super long so I'm not gonna go real in-depth on stuff. I'd be happy to talk about the run if anyone's interested though! It's a really fun run, very little luck involved and pretty easy execution-wise.
Thread title:
Just had a practice run finish at 18:24 with a death in stage 5 (damn flowers). I used safe strats in a couple spots, didn't get good Nuberu or Quixote luck, and had a horrible Guardian Spirit fight, but other than that it was a pretty solid run. Without the death it probably would have cut 18:10.

I think I'm just gonna sit down and crank out a recording soon, even if it's sloppy. My PB has fantastic luck and really solid execution for the most part, so only being 2 seconds behind it with a death and bad luck is really encouraging.

Just recorded an 18:25. As soon as I can beat the video editing boss I'll put it on youtube.

The run itself is honestly kind of crap, there was a lot of slop and I had a terrible Quixote fight, but it has the most current strats in it. Sub-18 is still my goal.

edit: Here's the run! Youtube kinda mangled it and I haven't got a clue how to stop that from happening, but hopefully the strats and everything make sense. Think I'm gonna have to record with the scanline effect off from now on, which is a shame because it's really cool.

I missed both quick kills in stage 1, unfortunately. You can kill the miniboss in one vulnerable phase, and kill the boss before he goes into the figure 8 pattern; both kills save around 2-3 seconds and more importantly they look sweet. The Zarrampla kill is pretty simple, but the miniboss is a little more complex. You basically wanna damage boost in order to avoid having to dodge his attack, time two sickles to boomerang into him when his vulnerability starts, and then just attack fast. It's pretty difficult so I'm not surprised I missed it, but going for it and missing is still faster than fighting him the "right" way.
Hey, great stuff! I've been running this on and off for a few weeks now (my PB is around 24 minutes) and I was completely blown away by some of the stuff in this video. Great job on finding all these quick kills for a few of the bosses and those damage boosts, will definitely try these things out in my runs.

Also, during one of my early runs I somehow managed to skip the manticore. Basically, I got into the boss room, the manticore spawned and then the door on the other side of the room suddenly opened and I could just leave without even fighting the manticore. I have no idea how it happened and unfortunately don't have a recording of it. I've been trying to find out what causes it but I have no clue so far. Great run though, looking forward to seeing a sub 18 run and trying some of this stuff out myself!
Thanks for the kind words! This is a great game, glad to see other people playing it Smiley

Manticore skip would be amazing, I can't think of anything that would cause it though. Maybe hitting a skeleton and walking through the door before it explodes?
