Probably I have already mentioned this. but here is what kind of gaming I loved to see at MAGfest.

Stanski playing Sonic 2 where one of the highlight. specially the metropolitan or whatever the name is, of that level where you stopped and started to count. 1001,1002,1003 every attempt Cheesy

Andrew playing Super mario 1,3 - awsome. 1 billion glitches on mario 1 and speedrun competition at smb 3 Smiley

Me and Mike playing Sunset riders and Contra. And saw some movies he had in some archives never submitted.

tjp7154 playing DKC

Carcinogen did play a lots of old 3d games. to bad I am not very much into that Tongue

Kareshi did a ghost n goblins show for me. I am so honored. Even if the TV where lagging he did finish it easilly Smiley and he also played a bunch of Nintendo songs on piano. Like the Ninja gaiden intro or the Metroid ending. fantastic!  Kiss

Quote from nate:
i must protest that i was not "playing metroid prime for hours" ... i was actually conducting the second m2k2 rl meetup right under your noses! (first was at saber's house in december 2006 with both me and saber attending.) we got a whopping three people attending this time, a 33% increase from last time. shame saber couldn't come this time though.

let's try for four next year!!!

I am also a member of the Mk2k. but I do not use to visit it. but When I entered the Gaming room at MAGfest I went straight up to the NES challenges and finished the Metroid Expert Challenge. that would prove I am a worthy member, right Sad Maybe I should havbe shown how to run Zero mission Tongue
btw. Nice to see you playing Prime, even if I never did watch you for more then 5 minutes, it was nice to see a bunch of tricks pulled off IRL Smiley

Also, STREET FIGHTER fokking IV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg. people where like crazy when they started it at the big screen Cheesy

And we did play some twinkle starsprite and stuff, have to play that game some in da future, also playing super mario kart with Enhasa where great.

And I realised what a nerd Enhasa really is. he know so much about so many games that my brain could not calculate that. Maybe he is the biggest alround gamer, I dont know. But the other guys did also knew a lot. I felt like a mongo sometimes. when Mike asked me "Have you played that game" and for the 71th. time in three days I said "no" Cheesy
I where probably at Radix level. he said he never played Ninja gaiden Smiley
It's great everyone got together.  And it sounds like it's annual! Grin

Heck, maybe I'll leave the four states I have ever been to (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois for three days once, never been to Canada) and join up with everybody!  Too bad I'm probably no more interesting in person than I am online Roll Eyes
we'd love to have you dude.

And half a plan for me. =D

Perhaps an NES game to run too.

I really hope I can make it next year. The closest I can get is local Smash Bros tournaments.

Of course, it was also my 21st birthday that night, so I was entitled to a drink X-p

I'm glad you said "entitled," as many of my friends seem to think it's an obligation to drink, especially after 21.

Haters gonna hate
Figure I should chime in with my overall thoughts and impressions of the weekend before it's too far gone.  In short, lots of fun.  Magfest was pretty cool on the whole, but hanging out with the SDA people really made the weekend.  You're all pretty cool people, it was fun chilling with you guys.

On the subject of using real or forum names, I largely tried to stick to real names personally, though I too fell into heavy usage of "hey you" and "hey man" in a lot of cases.  I was also aware of the fact (and didn't care) that I was called Breakdown waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more often than my real name.

On a related note, definitely one of the more memorable moments of this thing for me was when Radix stopped by Mike's.  Mike went around the room introducing everybody by their screen names and when he was done Radix turned to him and said something to the effect of "OK, do any of these people have real names?"

Other highlights for me include:

The NES challenges.  Like I said in the other thread, these made up the bulk of my Magfest, but I had such a good time doing them that I'm fine with that.  The prize money for 2nd was definitely more than I usually get paid for playing video games (i.e. not at all), so that was a nice bonus, but getting there was all the fun certainly.

Playing shmups in actual arcade cabinets (candy cabs no less!).  I hate to say it, but I have to admit the people at shmups.com actually know what they're talking about (gasp!) when they say playing on actual hardware is sooooooo much better than playing in MAME, though this fact helped me none whatsoever with Mars Matrix, I still sucked real bad at that one.  The only downside to these was waiting for whoever was on a given machine to get done credit feeding their way through the whole game before getting off of it (he's on his ninth credit, he's doing pretty well, just has to keep doing the super combo move).

Drunken commentaries at Mike's the one night.  So much fun and the products are hilarious (we had all the best plans going in Smiley ).  The links are floating around if you ask the right people, and I'm thinking (and hoping) there will be a general release of these in an upcoming update.

Playing Parappa the Rapper and Um Jammer Lammy after Magfest was over.  Best cutscenes and quotes from any games, ever.

Seeing Frezy's thumb in action during Contra attempts and seeing the level 1-2 moonwalk attempts in SMB 3 practice.  Highly entertaining.

Actually getting requested a couple times to make some Ristar attempts, to which my first response (and the first response when anybody wants to watch me make speedrun attempts) was "gotta warn you, there'll be a ton of restarts" and then realizing immediately "wait, these people understand!"

Really, that last one sums up probably what I thought was the best part of the weekend, actually hanging out with people who understand the speedrunning process and share the same love and devotion to games that I do.  Plus the real life meeting really helped to solidify (to me anyways) a sense of community with this site that posting and irc just couldn't by themselves.  A great experience overall, looking forward to next year already.

What's really funny is nate being concerned about the filesize becoming 25% larger from these audio commentaries when Dark Castle is what, a 4MB file right now?

The best part was how mad we were at spineshark for skipping the cutscenes.

(spineshark skips yet another cutscene)
us: STOP SKIPPING THE CUTSCENES!

Maybe we do need a Story Demos Archive. Tongue Then again, if anyone wants to create such a site, you just gotta believe!

I remember first experiencing Frezy's thumb not by sight, but by sound. I heard a shrill "ppppppppppppppppp" sound, and then the boss exploded a second later.
it's not the 25% larger, it's the 25% larger and no sign the commentary is there ...

Nate: we can just make an update about it, or just tell people on the forums about it. It's not like a lack of a commentary notice stopped stanski's Sonic 2 commentary from being posted.

Carc: Be prepared to watch cutscenes better than any RE or FF game you've ever played. If youd on't like these cutscenes, you have no soul.

Actually, you would especially like these because you're such a stoner Tongue

This is going to spoil nearly every single cutscene in the game for you.

Hot damn.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Just thought I should update and say I've converted a couple of videos from my camera's "unpratically huge" XQ format via Anri-Chan to a much more reasonable "HQ", which should lower the overall file size (6.5 GB) to about a fifth of that when I upload it. I'm dedicating tomorrow to getting everything else done and start uploading it to FileFront or Rapidshare or something, and by Sunday night have the entire MAGFest picture/video thing whatever available. Smiley

And to keep the tradition going, another random photo tease:

Molotov did a great job catching me mid-meal. General Tsu's FTW!
wise fwom yo gwave
The other thing i really liked about magfest were all the fighting game players sucked. Its a rare opportunity that I get to win, but I got to win a lot that weekend. There is just something special about playing on a cab too, huddled next to eachother (though the vs. cab's were sweet also!) that you just don't get from online play (and there are 0 arcades in my area). There were still some good players there, but yea it was just a lot of fun.

stanski: heh, yeah that was fun. But what about the Tecmo Super Bowl savant?

Wait. Seriously?

Yes, it took me a whole two times to realize that pressing any button skipped the scene.  Which in this case is definitely two times too long.  After that we started putting it on the table so it wouldn't be touched.  Mostly by me.

Still, it's shocking that the game has such advanced cutscene-skipping technology.

Hey tri-hex, maybe if you ask nate, he'll give you a part of quandra so you don't have to deal with rapidshare or filefront.
yes, america's most blunted
it's weird, most of those videos don't play audio in vlc, and they don't play video in windows media player so i have to set them both going at the same time. and so where's the promo video?
