Memorable parts of MAGFest/the trip for me:

Meeting frezy (duh).  I didn't know him as well as most of the other people but he's SO COOL, relatively speaking =p

Dicking through Batrider with Maur and Enhasa, then playing Galuda 2 later.  Also, playing SF4, the Vampire Savior 2 cab (and VS1 against Enhasa), Money Puzzle (with Enhasa again), MD3 cab...just holy shit, there were a lot of fun games.  I earned high scores on Galuda 2 and Mushi.

Finishing a whole ONE Nintendo Challenge.  That Dragon Spirit one was awfully easy, after I learned about the walls (lol) and found out where going left kills you.

Getting drunk!  It was weird but pretty fun, even though I didn't really do anything on the commentaries (which was dumb of me).  At one point I was so out of it though, somebody handed me the bag of chips and I just kept stuffing them into my mouth really fast.

Andrew and Frezy's speedrun competition on Mario 3, Frezy practicing Contra and Mario 3, Breakdown practicing Ristar, and watching Stanski play tons of Sonic 2.  And me personally not doing anything related to running at all.  Whoo!

Co-op Red Star.  I didn't play but it was funny.

Radix's visit.  I think he's a pretty cool guy.  The later story of his conversation with Frezy was pretty great too.

Meeting everyone.  Basically everyone was cooler than I thought, except maybe mike, since I already knew he was really cool >_>  I even met a guy from another forum who knew I was there because he saw my name on the signup sheet for MD3 tourney.

Shaking my head in disbelief: when the guy set up the Gals Panic board.  It seems like there are probably ways to look like a creepy perv in public that involve less work.  But I saw some people over there, especially a kid who looked maybe 16 based on what I could see under his hoodie (not much).  I told the guy he shouldn't have set the switches to "Free Play"  Roll Eyes

Also, about names: I called people mostly by real names, except Breakdown.  It felt kind of weird for some people but not for others.  But I had to go with VorpalEdge's real name since I wasn't going to say that out loud and I didn't want to say "Maur," at least to his face >_>

Quote from mikwuyma:
Stanski: "Everyone looked just like I expected, except for Emptyeye."
Me: "Why? What did you expect him to look like?"
Stanski: "Well, I expected him to look like a really smart Hulk Hogan, but he's so short."

I didn't have a lot of preconceptions about what I expected people to look like. I will say that I did not expect Mike to..how to put this nicely...have the proper body type to be doin' the big sexy. Wink I suppose I had this notion in my head of "Uyama is Asian, Asians are thin, right?"
I'd already seen pictures of everyone pre-event, except for Mike, Breakdown, Maur, and Spineshark. =p
i must protest that i was not "playing metroid prime for hours" ... i was actually conducting the second m2k2 rl meetup right under your noses! (first was at saber's house in december 2006 with both me and saber attending.) we got a whopping three people attending this time, a 33% increase from last time. shame saber couldn't come this time though.

let's try for four next year!!!

Um...wouldn't 3 be a 50% increase over 2?
don't ask me dude ...

I like how I don't count (though I really don't, I probably have less than 5 posts on m2k2 in 2008).  Of course, I've also probably posted in the MAGFest threads more than everything else on SDA combined in the past year.

Emptyeye: It's not called the big sexy for nothing Tongue

About names, this was my first conversation with Breakdown (it was over the phone).

"Hey Breakdown, I mean Chip...whatever." (everyone laughs)

That roughly summed up how I treated everyone's name.

spineshark: sure, you'd count, but you never actually played any Prime with us. Tongue

Oh, I see.  I really should've, I haven't touched that game in a long time.

Well, I think it's weird to just call people by different names than I'm used to, even if the interaction is taking place in a different space.  So for nate and Mike it was really easy, and everyone else varied until on the other end was Breakdown (who aside from having a great handle) whose name I didn't even know before I met him in person.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
Enhasa, I still don't know your real name or how to even pronounce "Enhasa." haha
My feelings on The Demon Rush
lol yeah, Enhasa was terrible at introducing himself. He was Kevin, aka the only real Asian.

I called everyone by their handles, but "hey you" was what I used most.
Since everybody else has been sharing some thoughts on MAGFest, I guess it's ok to shamelessly plug this. I was going to write that thing anyway, so rewriting some of it here makes no sense.

I've already mentioned it to Mike, but I thought he was giving me one heck of a cold shoulder the entire time. Now I can at least understand that it's not because he hates me or thinks I'm carrying the plague. Smiley

Dude, that drinking business is just wrong (then again, I refuse to ever drink, so I'm biased). You're younger than me, and I'm not even 21 yet. >_<

I also have to say that I would've liked to meet Radix at least once. I wasn't part of the cool club that got invited to Mike's house though, so oh well. Tongue

As for names, I pretty much went with the usernames the entire time. I knew some real names, but it was easier to say the username and avoid the "huh" that immediately follows a real name drop: "Where is Greg?" "Huh?" "Spineshark." I generally spoke quietly enough (or maybe my accent butchers English?) that I would receive a "huh" response anyway, so if I wanted to speak to a specific person it sometimes turned out to be easier to just poke them to get their attention.

Also, I'm eagerly awaiting the camera dump from Trihex. I'm sure he got some great stuff, considering all the videos he recorded.
Hehe, silly Molotov, nobody was leaving you out as far as I'm concerned. Opportunity was being a cheating whore. X-p

And as far as I'm concerned, everyone was 21. I'm sure foreigners look at our drinking laws and shake their heads (especially Frezy, who pretty much had diplomatic immunity). Taking in any sort of socially enhancing impairing substance is fine, so long as you do it responsibly. I don't like to drink either, because I'm a huge lightweight and I often feel like shit afterwards. Of course, it was also my 21st birthday that night, so I was entitled to a drink X-p

It doesn't really matter so much whether you call someone by their screen name or not, either. Whatever they prefer, really. People either called me Wes or Carc, but I didn't care, because I actually got to see these people IRL. =p
Hi! I'm andrewg!
Heh, Molotov I was close to going up to you and being like "you from SDA?" I should have because I just saw you waiting around at like 11AM on thursday. I didn't want to seem like a weirdo if you weren't an SDA member though.  Wink
Psh, there's nothing weird about going up to someone. Just be like "Oh, sorry, thought you were someone I'd met." but don't be super apologetic about it... Otherwise it gives off the message that something's wrong =p

Actually, I was pretty fortunate that I either guessed everyone correctly, or they simply introduced themselves to me.
welcome to the machine

Hey, I'm up for it.

I'm not quite sure if I count, though, given that I'm posting this here instead of at m2k2.
gamelogs.org
Would actually be cool to have a separate m2k2 meetup sometime (though I don't know why I'm posting that here and not there :P). Probably'd have to wait awhile, though.

Heh.  That sounds good to me.

For my first video game convention, I guess it was a pretty good experience.  To be honest not much held my interest except when the rest of the group was doing something (i.e. watching Andrew play SMB1) and some of the panels.

There was that first awkwardness from meeting online people in real life.  It was definitely easier to associate faces with handles (except Mike, Andrew, and Nate).

Heh.  They showed a preview of the fan-made Megaman movie there (longer than what's on the internet).  It was pretty funny to watch, especially the comedy that was his rendition of Dr. Wily.  They said it should be complete in 2009.

I remember Nate and some others from the group going to the nearest mall.  No one would go anywhere.  They just talked and talked and I had to lead everyone along like sheep to get anywhere!

The next get-together DEFINITELY needs to have more group speed run watching and demos.
Well, the purpose was pretty much to meet up.

I approve of the watching bit if there's commentary recording involved =]
nate is only my handle!
