This is one of my favorite games of all time, and I've beaten it maybe 80 to 90 times from start to finish.  I haven't seen any threads on SDA about this game, so I plan on doing an any% run.  I'm currently replaying the game again, this time making notes of every segment.  The game is fairly straightforward so I don't think there are ways to segment skip.
Here's what I have so far:
Blue Spire:
-Get to Lucia at level 6.
-I get Hiro to level 7 on the way down to learn Poe Sword.
-Guardian boss battle.  I just use the stalemate trick to have Ruby kill him in one hit.  Lvl: 10
-Exit tower and finish cutscene with Leo.
-Time here is around 38 minutes.

Getting Ronfar:
It takes around 6 minutes to get Ronfar.
It takes another 8 to leave Larpa.  For the mini dungeon, 90% of the time, I can never run away from the first set of slimes, but I can for the remainder of the monsters I meet.
-Time here should be around 54 minutes.

Dalton/Dragonship Destiny:
It takes around 2 and a half minutes to get onboard the dragonship destiny.  I get the long sword on Hiro (still level 10)
It takes me around 11 minutes to leave Dalton.  I basically spend all my money on herbs and 2 dragonwings.
-Time here should be around 1:07.

Starlight/Illusion:
Get to Illusion in about 3 minutes.
Grab the snake crest and chain mail chests.
Finish Illusion forest in 8 minutes and meet Jean.
Hiro at level 13. Beat Plantella... it takes me almost 9 minutes to beat it because I suck.
Time here should be around 1:35.

Takkar:
Enter Takkar at 1:36.
Get both star light and passion fruit.
It takes around 6 minutes to get to the ghost manor.  I pick up both the purity and wind ring.
Get star light right before boss fight.
Boss fight is RIDICULOUSLY HARD, but manageable.  I enter with Hiro at lvl 15 and survive with only Jean left at 16 hp and no herbs left...
Time here is right over 2 hours.

Nota:
I get to Nota at 2:10 with pretty bad luck running away.  I pick up all the chests on the way.
Get Gauss Necklace and silver Light, buy broadsword, iron shield, and silver bandana.
Time entering bridge is 2:12.

Mystic Ruins:
Enter ruins at 2:15.
Out of the Ruins in 4 minutes.  I ignore the Dream Crest since it's useless and get the flame staff in the second room even though the path is longer.  It makes things easier in the next dungeon.
Time here is 2:19.

Zulan:
Enter here at 2:23.  I got the Life Jewel in Nota so it takes 15 seconds longer.
Enter Mountains at 2:26.  It's a good thing this dungeon's chests are not out of the way since they're pretty good (Power Crest, Water Staff, Barrier and Phoenix Ring)
Takes about 5 minutes to get to the top of the mountain.  Equip Lemina with Phoenix Ring, and Hiro with Barrier Ring.
Fighting the boss at level 17.  Stupidly easy but long battle.  2 ATK upgrades by Lucia and 3 by Lemina let Hiro do ~190 dmg with poe sword.  Hiro gets to level 20 from this battle.
I leave Zulan at 2:49.

Meribia is boring. Bought Bastard Sword and Platinum Fan for Jean.  Grab Life Jewel and Earth Crest.

Enter Taben's Peak at 2:54.  Get to the top in 5 minutes.  I pick up everything except the herb chest.

Re-enter Meribia at 3:00.
I hate this dungeon.  I seem to fail running away 90% of the time, so it takes me 8.5 minutes to reach the end.
The fight is 80% luck based I think.  Since I am grossly underleveled, I need to make a sea of dead people so that the last survivor can kill them off slowly.  The fight only takes 5 minutes though.

Vane:
Enter Vane at 3:24ish.
Enter Vane through cave of trials at 3:29.
Get all the chests in Vane before I leave.  Equip Lemina with thieves staff.

**Note: In case people don't know, Gorgon Doll+Rubber Boots+Yellow Pajamas let Hiro run twice as long in dungeons.  Downside is the person with all 3 equipped starts the battle asleep.  I plan on having that be lemina when I get the yellow pajamas (Raculi).  She's pretty useless as a meat shield going through dungeons anyways.

Sluice Forest:
Enter Sluice Forest at 3:36.

Enter Azado at 3:41.  Equipped Hiro with Warrior Crest.
Update all gear on Hiro and Ronfar.  Buy tons of Herbs and Healing Nuts.  It takes about 2-3 minutes to do all this.
Night time starts at 3:46.
Get to shrine at 3:51.
Beat boss at 4:01 (hiro level 21).  He's easy once I have Litany on Leo.  I found out gauss necklace and healing ring can stack, but not two healing rings Sad
I run down to get the healing crest and ring.

***Time at start of disk 2 is 4:05 with Hiro at level 24***

Pentagulia:
MYstere joins the party at 4:11.
Ronfar joins the party at 4:19.
Jean joins the party at 4:27.
Lemina joins the party at 4:34.

Exit Taben's Peak at 4:50.

Enter White Dragon Cave at 4:54.  Leo is easy (4 poe swords).
Takes 8 minutes to get to boss.  I try to steal chiro crests from the set of two chiro in the first floor, but fail.  If anyone knows a good way to bait the crystals to break the ice pillars in the first floor it would speed things up too.
Boss takes 9 minutes to kill with Hiro at level 26.  I play super carefully and accidentally use one extra starlight because I'm paranoid and lost track of how many Poe swords I used.  This would be 10x easier with Lemina at lvl 32.
Leave White Dragon Cave at 5:23.

Enter Horam at 5:24.
Enter Zen Zone at 5:29.  Jean finally isn't useless.
It takes around 12 minutes to beat all three rounds.  The shadow dragon cult (last stage) is really nervewracking considering jean has to defend until there is only one left since she only has 190+ HP.
**Note: if I was able to steal Shiro and Chiro crests from the previous dungeon this would be much easier. Jean with snake ring and two shiro crests ensures that she dodges over half of the attacks.
It takes 6 minutes to beat Lunn.  He's laughably easy.  It can probably be cut by 20 seconds or so, but I forgot to equip Jean with the Warrior Crest.  Also, Lunn is unable to use his flying kick if you defend and move yourself upwards at the beginning of the round, giving me an extra turn to attack whenever he puts his palms up.

Enter Blue Dragon Cave at 5:48.
The important things to get here are Revenge Crest, Anti-Magic Ring, and Plasma Ring.  The only one out of the way is the revenge crest, but it makes all future fights easier (Snake+Revenge gives bonus attack every turn).
Takes 7 min to get to boss. 2 of the floors can easily be done without running into anything.
Boss takes 11 minutes... way too long.
Exit cave at 6:03.
I go back to Meribia quickly and spend all my money on Star Lights + Herbs.

Enter zabak Mines at 6:05.
Exit Zabak Mines at 6:07.  Picked up all the good things too.

Enter Neo-Vane at 6:08.
Enter Neo-Trial Cave at 6:10.
Pick up Healing Ring, Clear Ring, Silver Light.
Takes 7 minutes to get through Neo-Trial Cave with semi-bad luck running away.
Hiro level 32.  Including the talking, beating Borgan takes 8 minutes (or 7 turns).  Didn't have to use a single item.

Enter Black Dragon Cave at 6:27.
I feel like fighting the zombies and trying to flee take the same amount of time, seeing as how fleeing almost never works in this cavern.
With good luck I manage to get past B1 with only one encounter. Same for B2.
Get to Boss Room in 6 minutes.  Hiro is level 34 here, so the boss has about 4250 life.  With Napalm, Ice Arrows, and Boomerang dealing 150+220+130=500dmg/turn, this should theoretically be only about 8 turns long.  Not having chiro+chiro here really hurts because I am unable to WPD at the beginning of the match to conserve mana.  The mana issue wouldn't be so bad either if Lemina was 36 and could use Magic Swiper.

Enter Raculi at 6:49.  Get Yellow Pajamas.  I now have Gorgon Doll, Rubber Boots, and Yellow Pajamas, which let me run for two to three times as long.

Enter Serak Palace at 6:51.  It's better to just get the Holy Hairpin and Psycho Gauntlet for now.  Everything can be looted later.
Get Althena's Aura and return to entrance at 6:53.
Time after ravaging Mauri's vagina monster is 7:14.  Easy fight.  Used 3 healing nuts and 4 herbs.

Time entering Red Dragon Cave is 7:15.  Equipped Lemina with all the running gear.  Get to Boss in 3 minutes.  I only pick up Dyne's Armor and Water Ring.  I will get the Shield Ring on my way out.
Takes 12 min to kill boss using 4 star lights.  It's possible to do it with 3 star lights and under 10 though.  Lemina can 1v1 the boss.
Leave Serak Palace at 7:37.

Althena's Fortress:
Enter Pentagulia at 7:41.
Arrive at Goddess Statue at 7:48. Equip everyone with respective endgame gear.
Time after killing her is 7:57.  Only Hiro gets hurt throughout the entire match.  No items or deaths.
Takes 1 minute to get to top of goddess tower.
Hiro at level 41.
Note: Important to switch gear before disc change or Ghaleon will destroy me.

**********Start of disc 3 is at 8:02*************

Vane:
Finish talking to party members and start shopping at 8:04
Get Ghaleon's Sword at 8:24.  Only used 2 Herbs and 2 Healing Nuts.

Zophar's Keep:
Enter Zophar's Domain at 8:29.
Get to top at 8:38 with bad luck running from seeds.
Use one life jewel for preparation.
Items entering fight: 20 Healing Nuts, 4 Passion Fruits, 2 Life Jewels, 15 Star Lights, 12 Silver Lights, 7 Angel Tears.
ZOPHAR:
Hiro (MD) Fiend/TriRing, Revenge/Snake Crest
Ronfar (NE) Clear/Healing Ring, Red Dragon Crest
Jean- (SW) Spirit Talisman/Healing Ring, Warrior/Goddess Crest
Lemina- (SE) Wind/Stardust Ring, White Dragon/Chiro Crest
Leo- (NW) Water/Fresh Ring, Blue Dragon Crest
Hiro is designated human meat shield since his damage sucks.
First form is a joke.

Zophar's 2nd form.
Each hand dies in about 6 minutes.
After 12 minutes of attacking the main body he gets mad.
25 min in he uses target all.
Takes 47 minutes to kill zophar's second form (excluding his invincible period).  I was scared shitless near the end because Ronfar died and I had no more Angel Tears left.
Incredibly happy to see this screen:

The entire Zophar fight including scenes takes 1:14.
Total items used in this fight: 5 Healing Nuts, 1 Passion Fruit, 1 Life Jewel, 15 Star Lights, 7 Silver Lights, 7 Angel Tears.
Return to Vane at 10:02.
Save to Epilogue at 10:13.  Hiro is level 43.  Up to here I imagine a time of 9:40 is doable with (unreasonable amounts of) good luck.
Thread title:
I thought about doing the Sega CD version, but it's a lot harder to run away compared to the first one, and the load times are much worse as well. Haven't played the remake, but I'd certainly be interested in watching it. Good luck.
Fucking Weeaboo
I've been wanting to see one, but this game drives me nuts with the randomness.

Will you be doing the epilogue too, or just the main game?

Currently I'm just trying to get to endgame.  I really want to avoid grinding hiro to level 50, and I think it's doable to beat zophar without triple sword strike, but it's reasonably luck-based and really annoying.  The problem with getting to the end of the epilogue is the phantom sentry at the dragon ruins.  His attacks hurt way too much, and if I'm not grabbing the hero's talisman for the sake of speed, I'm not sure if it's even doable.
Sorry for the double post, but edited first post to include all things till the end of disc one.

I liked the Lunar games, especially Working Designs' localization of it.  I'm looking forward to what you manage to do with this run.

thanks.  I can't even imagine how much luck will be involved in doing this.  Also, everything to the end of disc 2 is added now.

EDIT: Everything up to Epilogue added.
Ways to improve on time:

Up to Blue Spire- with dumb luck Hiro can run away from all but the first fight.  It can potentially save 2 minutes or so.
Dragonship Destiny- straightforward. With good luck one of the captains will drop a Chain Mail.
Illusion Forest- Plantella can be one minute faster easily.
Ghost Manor- Boss fight can be faster by about a minute as well with better planning.
Nota- Only buying the broadsword.
Meribia- Platinum Fan is not necessary.
Meribia Sewers- With dumb luck getting to the end of the dungeon can be shortened by 2 minutes.  The fight is also fairly luck based--can probably shave off another minute.  The chance of everything going well is almost zero though.
Vane- Angel ring not necessary to pick up ~ saves 20 sec.
Azado- Better menu navigation can shave off another minute.

Realistically the end of disc one time can be shaved by 5 to 6 minutes with better playing.

Pentagulia- It may be faster to get Lemina first since she is on the same side. It is much riskier though.  I imagine it can save 1 minute.
White Dragon Cave- It is critical that Chiro crests are stolen here.  They will make future boss fights like the Black Fiend much easier and faster.  Boss time can be shaved by around a minute as well.
Horam- If I have 3 Chiro Crests the total fight time can be shortened by a minute.  Also, remember to equip Jean with Warrior Crest.
Blue Dragon Cave- I am wondering if the Revenge Crest is actually necessary.  The bonus damage of Snake+Revenge seems crappy without Triple Sword Strike.  Boss fight can be shortened/be easier with Chiro Crests.  Can probably shave off upwards of 2 minutes.
Black Dragon Cave- need to get lucky with running away.  If I had Chiro Crests, I could power level a little off zombies. With Chiro Crests (again) the boss fight can be shorter by another minute too.
Red Dragon Cave- Shield Ring not necessary ~30 seconds.  Boss fight can be 2 minutes shorter.

Time at end of disc two can be shortened by up to ten minutes with Chiro Crests.  Also, number of star lights saved can be improved by 3.

Zophar's Keep- Better luck running away from seeds ~ 30 seconds.
Better menu navigation for prepping.
Fight with zophar-With Chiro Crests I imagine the second form to be much safer to fight.  I still need to experiment with killing his hands. The current strat I used with Hiro at lvl 43 is to kill the outer two arms, then attack the main body.  I don't know whether to do this or to kill one outer arm and his healing arm.  The healing arm is annoying because it does damage, heals, and steals MP (the biggest concern of the three).  However, killing the healing arm and leaving one outer arm poses problems too for the effectiveness of WPD.  Thoughts anyone?
Third form can't be much faster. It's time based.

If it's possible to kill zophar without killing his hands at all, then time here can be improved by 12 minutes easily.  This requires his second form to not be annoying and spam target-all and OHKO.

Target time currently is sub 10 hours for now, or sub 9:50 if Zophar's hands are intact.

If anyone is interested, here is a practice video up till the end of the Blue Spire.  There are some really retarded errors that I've pointed out in the description.

Target time for this segment is 25 minutes.
So after an incredibly long hiatus I've started working on this again.  Uploaded a near-perfect Plantella fight.  I sorta suck at navigation.

Professional Second Banana
Nice - looking forward to seeing more!
Are You going to split this up into several different runs? Like will there be a 100% for the cutscenes that take far to long to speed run, like the bath scenes for soap and whatnot? Also thanks for this run, sega CD is the reason I really started playing RPGs and lunar one was definately the main reason. Please don't stop perfecting the run!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I am looking forward to this as well!

Cutscenes are skippable in this game.  If there was to be a 100% of this game, it would most likely be all key items (like alex's ocarina or the mirror), all bromides, all optional dungeons, beat Star Dragon.  At the moment though I haven't planned for the Epilogue.
I just want to watch a full speedrun of this game. Haven't seen or heard of any being done before.

Meribia Sewers Mini-Boss Battle Strat:

It would be faster normally to remove all gear from the other 3 members so they die faster and to also not have them attack.
How are you taking down the Blue Dragon Fiend? I am currently doing a relatively low-level speedy playthrough and this guy seems pretty impossible (all my characters are currently level 33)

For a safe strat, the character placement should be
Lucia        Ronfar
        Jean
Hiro        Lemina

You will need to move Jean one space back from the center tile or the Blue Fiend will target her for whatever reason.
The goal is to have the Blue Fiend target Lucia for the zone/mute attack since she is immune most of the time.  Lemina should have one of the water retardant rings on or she will be OHKO'ed by the the blue fiend when the water element is amplified in this fight (if I remember correctly it does around 210-225); the other one to whomever.

The blue fiend always follows the same pattern.  Attack all -> Zone -> attack all -> zone -> heal. Repeat.  Ronfar will always go after the blue fiend, so just heal pre-emptively.  I personally think it's pointless to use saint litany or WPD in this fight.  Also, if you want to play it safe, have Lemina use ice shell on Lucia the first two turns.  It should reduce damage done to around 85-90.

The damage numbers I listed are for a party full of level 31.  The fight is still doable at 30 though (the minimum), but it takes way too long and WPD is necessary at that point.

Thanks duder! I messaged you about speedrunning Lunar on Youtube a couple months back before I joined up here, really looking forward to seeing more of it. You should definitely try to stream it sometime, or drop by when I am streaming it again (some day in the near future) and drop some more knowledge bombs on me Smiley

Hope you guys haven't given up on running this game. I've recently started planning out a run myself. I'm playing through a new game and making notes as I go. Don't have much to add at this point but I should in a few weeks. This'll be the longest game I've ever tried speedrunning so it'll be interesting. Right now I just keep replaying Plantella for some reason.

I did have a question about running from battles. It seems as though there are areas where it is incredibly difficult to run from battles. I'm wondering if it would be quicker just to go through with some battles and gain the xp than waiting to run. I say this because there have been times where I have tried to run and have ended up dying or not dying but wasted a lot of time and party members to where I have to waste a lot of MP and items in order just to make it through. So, I was thinking there might be a strategy to certain areas (one area in mind is right after you get Lemina, between Takkar and Nota) where you fight battles because it is more advantageous than running as you would gain time/xp. Or I could be totally wrong. My mindset right now is on a single-segment run rather than segmeneted. I imagine if you're planning on going on a segmented run it would be better to run from all battles, I guess. I dunno. I'm still pretty unsure as I've just started my running. Just looking for some input.

Hi, it's great to know that an additional person took an interest in this game!  As for your question, I think there are certain enemies that are worth killing.  Primarily ones that you can guarantee will die in one turn with the use of at most one spell.  This includes the mummies in the Blue Spire, and definitely the ones in Black Dragon Cave.  Also, I think it's worth it to kill Doom Riggers in Blue Dragon Cave.  Also, anytime before you have Mystere, it's good to spam him on hoards.  I've noticed the only part of the game where it's practically impossible to run from enemies is Black Dragon Cave.  All other regions seem like they have a more forgiving RNG.
I'm honestly not sure what determines the escape-from-battle chance though.  It's already way more forgiving in this game than the Sega version though.  It doesn't seem very stat-related because you still fail to run from beetles sometimes even at level 99...
Gotcha, thanks for the reply. The randomness of running from battles has been driving me nuts so I've taken a break for a bit. Do you happen to stream at all, MSK? I'd like to be able to watch your Lunar stuff live.

So I picked up Lunar 2 speedrun recently, having some luck with it so far.  I've finished disc 1 in practice and started streaming some practice attempts of it.  Working on optimizing disc 2 and 3 currently.  Your initial notes have been a big help MSK.  Currently a couple things I'm doing different on disc 1 then what I see from your notes and runs:

-I grind Hiro to level 8 in Blue Spire off of the 1 hit kill fights
-I get Ronfar to 15 in the Forest of Illusion so he gets Saint Litany and it gets Jean in party at level 16 which is helpful for speed.
-I collect all the staves right now in case I need extra silver, will optimize that when I finish disc 2
-I buy the Iron shield in Nota, helps Hiro to tank Missing Link better
-I also pick up all the Life Jewels right now for Silver, usually use my first one for Plantella and can sell the rest.
-For Assassins I actually put Jean in the back row with Lemina cause she can easily poison them for massive amounts of damage, 55 per round.  Saves a lot of time.

I think thats it for now, I will keep posted with the changes I work on for myself especially as I finish practicing disc 2 and 3.
Down to 3:57:44 for disc 1 and that was with a 4:27 loss to Magic Tester for really bad RNG, sleep 4 times in a row caused Lucia to run to party.  No longer pick up any staff's except Flame and Thieves'.  With better dodging in some areas and more fine tuning 3:40-3:45 first disc is possible.  Hope to get some good work in with disc 2/3 next week, trying to manipulate Chiro's right now to make getting crests easier.
