Progress is slow, but steady.

I'm adding some more segments as I realize how much I loved using Save States on the Emulator.  >_>

Right now, I'm at Grenoble ready to do the Old Cave Level 3 and Medan, but I think I'm going to redo a segment to see if I can cut some more time from my current 1:08.

As for current pace, it's about on par with the previous run.  Basically, I keep a segment if the time is on par with the final emulator run AND it is not full of glaring mistakes.

Currently at Belgen with 1:28 elapsed.  I'm three minutes ahead of my emulator run.  What the time doesn't show is the 3 hours I spent trying to get decent segments to get this far.

This game REDEFINES random.  People thought random battles were bad?  Try random monster stats.  I knew this for a while, but I didn't realize how bad it truly was.  Each monster I fight spawns with RANDOM HP.  There is a median, but it's frustrating when 48 damage doesn't do enough to kill one, then it does enough to kill the same species in a different battle.

The ONLY constant I was able to find is the first battle after resetting.  The same monsters spawn each time.

For the record, I'm also at least 1/2 a level behind the emulator run.  No problems yet, though I did earn a fortuitious Scimiar drop in the Ghost Cave.  Marvel as Aguro MAIMS the Phantasy with 110+ damage each action.  At my current pace, I'm hoping to finish this run by next week.

I am obliged to cheer you on, as this is my baby. Wink

In terms of gameplay design, that's always bothered me too. I don't have a problem with it though (of course I'm not the one running), because I always thought it was neat how the enemies aren't just carbon copies of each other. If not in personality or appearance, which is infeasible, then at least in stats.

i liked it because it changed the battles up a bit from always being the same "oh just cast flash on the [whatever] and he'll die instantly."  i was doing ghost ship in chrono cross last night and man i got annoyed at myself for using fierce-fierce-meteorite so much.
Well, the formula's the same.  Flash and attack.  Replace Flash with Bolt when necessary.

Good news: I'm chugging away with the speed run.  I'm at Bakku, ready to ascend the Tower of Light for the Might Helm.  I'm also ahead of my previous run by 12 minutes.  I'm almost halfway done with the run!

Sweet, I tremble in anticipation.

spineshark: AFAIK, you're only halfway through Lufia? If so, you haven't encountered the best part of the game yet, so your opinion can only go up. Smiley

Awesome, DTK.  Can't wait to see this.

heh, unfortunately my brother is coming back next week from law school again, so if i can't beat lufia this weekend it's going to take me all summer.  i finished sfc top finally today and started up on it though.  haha, neo dhaos somehow got me stuck behind his arm and the rest of the battle was easy from there =/

Made some more progress.  Unfortunately, I do have some bad news to report.

When I said I was twelve minutes ahead of my previous run, what I didn't realize was that I misread my notes.  In actuality, I was only two minutes ahead of my previous run, as well as one full level behind.  This slowed down my run, and I am now one minute behind my emulator run.

The time elapsed now is 3:50, and I'm about to begin level building.
Sometimes, a bad break is an incentive to do better.

I missed a segment in between, so I'm forced to reload my game at Grenoble, which is about 33 minutes before my last update.  It turns out that a spontaneous decision to change my level building spot paid off dividends.

I changed my level building spot from the Alumina caves to the outskirts of Frederia.  Results?  I ended up 1 level higher than in my emulator run, and actually regained the time I lost and managed to make it back to 2 minutes ahead.

With that, I'm going to optimize the previous segments and see if I can't get any more time saved.

Ha, that's gotta suck to realize you read it wrong like that. And about changing your spots, I figured your detailed notes would be a little more... detailed. Tongue But whatever works right?

You know what I am going to say about being a level higher than the emulator run.

That's great that you're going back and optimizing previous segments, but make sure you don't make the common mistake of overwriting or keeping the wrong segment. It's real easy to do, and that would suck hard. Better to just optimize each segment as you go along if possible, so that way you don't have any nagging doubts. And you save time redoing segments too.

Edit: I'm all for high risk/high reward, so rock on. Smiley
I changed my level spot on a whim.  High risk, high rewards is basically how it ended up.  I level up faster and more consistently, but I also run a risk of getting killed.

Actually, Enhasa, being a level higher than the emulator run is helpful, since I lost time leveling up Jerin.

You're right though; better now than later, when I REALLY might regret it.
All right.  I'm at the FINAL save point, but I'm hitting a roadblock.

I can't seem to emulate my 24 minute Final Four run, so I'm going back a couple of segments and seeing if I can shave off any more time.

For the record, I'm at the final save of 4:59, but my best finish was 5:31 after the credits.  I WANT to break 5:30, and I KNOW it's possible, so I'm going to FINISH this tomorrow.

Stand firm Forgotten One...you've gotten so far and this close to your goal!  Good luck.

I'm going back to an earlier segment and seeing if I can shave any more time.

The problem right now is Guard Daos.  For some reason, I can't get a time better than 8 minutes against him, and frankly, it shouldn't be THAT long.  If I do decide to rerecord, the menu will now have Try Again option as well as my recent attempt to shave time (4:58 at final save instead of 4:59).
All right, shaved off two more minutes.  I estimate 4:56 at the final save point.

Basically, it's sub 5:30 or bust!

Sorry for the triple post, but I want to announce...

It's done!

Final Time After Credits: 5:27

All righty now, now to mark the segments and make my commentary.

I'm not going to post anything more here; the commentary will be as detailed as I can.
