If it weren't for my brain fart of leveling Hero and Lufia after Jerin hit 30, I would've hit 5:30.  On a different note, this was my fastest final four battle yet.

*Smacks self again.

Nice. That means you would have had 5:21, since you can stop screwing yourself over counting the credits time if you want. Tongue

Hmm, since last test run, you did:

49 less mins
2 less rests
52 less battles (did you Sweet Water more or is that just the optimization?)
8 less run aways
94 less chests Smiley
12 less items Smiley

Someone who watched this without knowing the game well, might even mistake it for an easy game. Wink

Optimization, mostly.

If someone tried to run this game as fast as I did, I believe they will be overwhelmed thanks to the game's archaic battle system.

I think I'll do a 5th practice run to see if I can shave any more time off.  Do you want me to record it this time around, so you can view it at your own leisure and give more comments?

LOL, archaic.

So nice to hear you're gonna test run again! Recording this time will be great, but I won't give any promises as to how often or quickly I can look at it. What are you using, latest ZSNES?

Edit: Well by latest, I really meant: recent enough. Tongue
I am using ZNES, and I'm fairly certain it's the latest version.

did anyone a lufia II speed run and had record it? pls write the link I am very interested!!!

When a run is available, you will see it on the news page. Expect about a year for Lufia 2, but it will be worth it. Any sooner would just be a nice surprise for you.
I haven't gotten much progress, but I'll just mention that I'm at my first save with 15 minutes elapsed on the clock.  In other words, I'm on pace.

Notes and such. I get the feeling like there's something I should say that I forgot.

quietkane has just resumed working on his Lufia 2 TAS WIP in the last week. Actually, I finally went and watched it and you know the 12 mins/27 mins thing (to get Tia and save) we had going on earlier? His TAS WIP gets the VERY start of 17 mins, so the next version could be improved. =p

About ZSNES, if you haven't actually started v5 yet, I realized that it might be better to use snes9x found here since that's what everyone else uses and it ought to be more field tested for recording. I mean, I still like ZSNES a lot more, and the lack of rewind pisses me off tremendously, but at least snes9x has keyboard remap and other things now to the point where I can stand it.

Here is a fan retranslation of Lufia 1. I don't really see the point, and neither does the author, but it's there. I haven't tried it out, but it probably isn't as bad as the FF4 one, which kinda sucked.
I'm actually home.  I'm going to see how my Lufia 1 cartridge fares tomorrow, so I can begin recording on the VHS.  I aim to finish it within the month, thanks to my notes.

Ooh nice. Kick some ass please! Wink
Just gotta say I really hope these runs happen.  Lufia I and II are two of my favorite games ever.

Haha Tom, because of this I went back and looked at your last 50 posts via your profile. From Lufia, We Love Katamari, Kingdom Hearts 2, Brain Age, etc, one could make the observation that you play mostly "chick" games! (This is tongue in cheek and a compliment to the games btw, meaning "doesn't rely on big guns, T&A, or being cool.")

Anyway, you could say the same about me, so it'd be like the pot calling the kettle black. Tongue
I think you're exactly right on the kinds of games I like.

Cheesy the first time Enhasa has spoken to me directly, I think that's a decent milestone in a person's SDA-existance

And Forgotten One, good luck on this run!

Chick games FTW!

Good luck with the recording Forgotten One. We're all waiting patiently and anxiously for this!

EDIT: Gah, page break....
Some bad news...

The battery for Lufia 1 doesn't seem to last very long.  After a week, the save vanishes.

I can circumvent this by finishing the entire run in a couple of days or by purchasing a new battery and kit online and replacing the battery myself.

I'm going to see how long the battery lasts exactly, and see if I can make a speed run in that time frame...

If the battery keeps dieing then just leave your SNES powered on for as long as you need to. Just use reset rather than on-off. I had a copy of Super Metroid which had a totally flat battery so I left the system on for a week while I completed it. Afterwards I switched it off. As soon as I turned it back on the saves were gone.
I never thought of that.  Thanks for the idea.

Hey DTK/FO, how's progress?

Chick games FTW!

Probably everyone already knows what I mean, but just in case, I decided to clarify myself on this. Games like Lufia, Katamari Damacy, Lemmings, etc... well, the percentage of games I would consider chick games is pretty low, and it's not by genre. I wouldn't include most RPGs for example. But for whatever reason, Lufia has it. It was the only game that my mom ever liked and connected with, even including universal favorites like Mario and Tetris. Even my girlfriend, who wasn't much into RPGs, loved this game. I've heard things like this all around the net.

I dunno, I seem to remember that most of the time when I lost saves, it was after resetting.

FO, if I were you I would definitely replace the battery. That's one less thing to have to worry about, and you don't want to have your saves erase halfway or do a rush job either. The more you play, the more you use up more of whatever battery is left, so it's probably better not to chance it.
To be honest, I haven't started yet.  The first month back ended up with me finding a job, reuniting with old friends, and basically reestablishing myself at home.

Still, thanks to my notes, I am fairly certain I can finish the run within a week, if I concentrate solely on it.  Take it an hour at a time.

All right, three segments down.  I'm leaving the game on while I do this, so...

The first three went well.  I gained a minute, then lost a minute, then gained another minute respectively.  31 minutes elapsed, and I'm about to fight the Mini Demon boss.

I'm going to apologize in advance for the lackluster quality this appears to be.  I'm using a VCR, so I hope we can salvage some of the quality when I get it submitted.

I also hope the quality won't prevent it from being rejected.
The weirdo all around you.
God, I remember playing this like AGES ago.

Umm...I used to memorize the script.

You're doing VHS copy of Lufia? Hmmm. Interesting. I'd like to see the final battle once you get to that segment, as I've seen it done four different ways and I seem to do it rather differently then the rest of my friends. If you are looking for ideas on how to cut your time, I'd be willing to help give some ideas.
The very last battle?  Against Guard Daos?

I mirror Jerin, Aguro, then Hero in that order.  I proceed to wail away, and replenish Mirror whenever it wears off.

Awesome, the end is in sight, so do your best!

If you send to Nate, there's no worry that it will be rejected from recording quality, trust me. Management is very forgiving unless you go off on your own and try to submit a WMV or something.

I love this post because well... read a couple posts above. This once again proves my theory that chicks love Lufia! (It's like my very own Germans and David Hasselhoff thing.)

How do you take on Guard Daos? Assuming I have Mirror, I tend to do it like FO does. I've done it at lower levels than that before, and it involved a good amount of Miracles. Although I think Gades is the hardest, especially if you have Mirror. If you can beat Gades, the rest should be doable.
