TASer
Hey there,
I've always been very interested in speedrunning SML2 and I tried setting records recently. I saw on a Japanese RTA site that the best time was 27:54, so I aimed to beat that time. I got 27:34 with using one glitch, but then saw the Japanese RTA site bans glitch abuse. Now I'm not sure if people managed to set faster times than 27:34.
The pipe glitch in SML2 only works on version 1.0 and it can allow to save a few minutes in a run if you're lucky. It could be a cool thing to try speedruns on that version but the problem is the version seems to be pretty rare... Out of ~10 people I asked, only one of my livestream viewers said he has v1.0 but I've never seen him around lately, sadly.
Looking for one of the following
[EDIT: I got what I was in need for, so this request thread served its purpose.]
How to determine what version you have
v1.0:
(1)
On the title screen, press
up+select or
up+A+select or
up+B+select or
up+A+B+select. If you go to a level, with the audio muted, and have control over Mario, then you have v1.0. If not, you have v1.1 or v1.2.
(2)
In a previously beaten level, go down a pipe and pause in the process. Press select to leave the level and re-enter any level - if you go through the ground, you have v1.0. If not, you have v1.1 or 1.2.
v1.1 or v1.2:
In a previously beaten level, pause at the same time you touch a checkpoint bell. Leave and enter a level that does not have a checkpoint bell (leaf level in Tree Zone, overworld map autoscroller, Hippo level...). If you hear the checkpoint bell ringing as you enter the level, you are successful - if not, you need to try the previous step again. Now die or leave the level and re-enter it. If you appear in the top left corner of the level, you have v1.1. If you appear at the normal start, you have v1.2.
Why do I want v1.0?
The version has potential to get times under 25 minutes. Or if the glitched TAS route can be done, I could even get under 6~7 minutes.
