MGS for PS1 forever.
Getting roughly 100% in Final Fantasy X.

It took me over 350 hours. Now, my characters HP is not all the way up to 99,999, but it's close enough. The sphere grid is maxed out for everyone. And then I got to gamefaqs.com and they have challenges to get even more out of the game. Um...350 hours...I think that was well worth the $20 I spent on it. Besides, now that that disk has had 350 hours of spinning and whatnot...you can't even get past the first 5 minutes of the game without the whole thing locking up, so even if I wanted to "extend" the life of the game...I'd have to buy it all over again...

Tales of Symphonia, i think it takes more 100 hours even in a speed run, because you must restart the game at least 3 times for to have all the titles

Yes, you need 3 playthroughs for 100%. Since this involves all titles, you have to talk to lots of women as Zelos, collect every single treasure chest for Sheena, spy lens on every enemy for the monster book, all figurines for Genis, etc etc.. LONG. Since you have to use the grade shop for the 2nd/3rd play, you can speed it up a lot with EXP boosters.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Blue Sphere

134,217,728 levels

http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/genesis/file/sonic_and_knuckles_blue_sphere.txt

Even if it were possible to score a perfect on every level, that would still be 13,421,773 levels to pass through. Assuming an average time of, say, 2 minutes for each perfect level, and no mistakes, the time would be...

51 years.

...

I'd watch it.
(might not want to use a space in the word "sphere" for the link)
Are those the same sphere games as the Sonic 1 + Sonic & Knuckles lock-on?
I got to 200 games before giving up. I guess I'm glad I did.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Yep. If you want, you could always find out the code to the last level, put it in, beat it, and go "Yay! I won!", given that is the only way you are ever going to beat it.
Lol, i have passwords written down for that up to level like 400 something.

First off, I can't believe people are considering 100% for this, because that can be so arbitrarily defined. How about any game with a weapon that powers up based on play time like Castlevania SotN? Perfect or 100% would include maxed out game time.

So given the criteria of longest game to speedrun conventionally, people may be able to think of better but so far everyone is missing the obvious Dragon Warrior 7. This is like we had a "name the fattest female celebrity" thread and nobody named Kirstie Alley. DW7 is the subject of punch lines because of its length, geez.

And Xenogears was not that long. It just felt that long.

More precisely the second CD felt long. The first one was a 60h theft of my life's time that I didn't even notice.

I just thought up another candidate:

Settlers I.

Of course without passwords, everyone can just enter the password for the last level.
what about ratchet and clank 1  100% the maximum bolts is 2,147,843,697 (something to do with a sloppy binary code when programming the game so its not just 99,999) that would take forever...
anyone ever tried going through Dark Cloud 100%. it takes forever to go through the demonshaft. and its sooooo boring. not to mention trying to get the best weapon for each person takes long enough Grin
100% The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
Guardian of the Great Bay Temple
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles

I dont know how many years is the minimum to beat it, but its quite longe in my opinion (at least 8 dungeons i guess).
*Checks GameFAQs.

Apparently, it's Year 5.  However, they say it's incredibly difficult to beat then, so you're better off waiting for a year or two.
Azure Dreams would be the longest game to speedrun by far, since there are 50 random maps, re-spawning enemies, and very annoying random events.

100% The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind with loads.

Killer Chobocos don't get any chocolate.
Max Clear completion of Star Ocean 3: 2 discs of generic stuff... lucky you can skip some scenes

But getting all the Battle Trophies would take AT LEAST 3 plays through (level 1 completion on 3 difficulties)
Quote:
ToS. Definately ToS. No skippable cutscenes, and you have to level up to be able to normally beat the game.

A New Game+ run is only a bit more than 8 hours, and a normal new game run should only take about 10 hours if you're a good fighter (which I am not).

1/4 to 1/3 of that time is cutscenes, though.
The longest game to speedrun?

Gran Turismo 4

Just think of the 24h races Smiley
Stupor is as Stupor Does
Star Ocean 2, Universe Difficulty 100%.

Dear Lord this game would take forever.  IIRC you can't skip cutscenes, you can't (completely) skip the spell animations (you can speed them up ever so slightly).  And all that leveling to beat the Cave of Trials and finally Iselia Queen.  *shudders *  I would be impressed with a sub 24 hour run, very impressed.

StuporMan
Hmm, SO2... worst game script ever!

I haven't beaten Iselia Queen, but limiter-off final boss was pretty annoying. I think many of the Cave of Trial fights can be done at some low-ish levels (if you can get past those pink insect things after the half-way point, those things are impossible) by abusing Dragon Howl.. the dragon and the phoenix-type monster seem susceptible to Dragon Howl.. they can sort of get stuck at the edge of the field and then it's a matter of spamming Howl and refilling MP for the remainder of the fight. Gabriel Celeste is another matter altogether.

I haven't played universe, only normal mode. But I wasn't highly ranked when I beat the game (in my fight fight against Idalecio (sp?), he died in 5 second from my Algol.. lame! With limiter off it was quite a long fight).

</no contribution whatsoever>
Stupor is as Stupor Does
alexpenev,

IIRC the difference between normal and universal mode is vast. A worthwhile comparison would be to compare normal mode to running through Super Mario Brothers using warps. In places it might be slightly challenging, but definitely achievable to the average gamer.  Now universal mode would be like trying to run through SMB the lost levels, small, without dying.  That may be a slight exaggeration, but not by much.  I remember my first attempt at universal mode.  I died in the very first fight.  Granted I was just playing around a little bit because I thought, its the first fight how hard could it be? In normal mode I could almost beat it without using my laser thing.

In short, Universal mode is MUCH more difficult. You must level up MUCH more than in normal mode.  Unfortunately I only ever played this as a rental, so I never got to complete Universe Mode, but what little I played (about half - way through the first CD)  and have read about it, clearing the COT with characters under lvl 200 is quite a feat.

Do the baddies just have way more HP and attack, or do they actually behave smarter as well? I suspect it's more a case of "oh, let's slap on another 0 at the end of this guy's HP, ho ho" rather than making the enemies "genuinely" harder. Then you just need to level up a lot. There's a few spots in the game where you can gain tons of levels safely.. such as from those enemies that only suck up your MP and do 0 damage Smiley
Stupor is as Stupor Does
There are several things that are affected. HP and Damage are the obvious ones, Intelligence is also increased, one of the biggest changes are the drastically increased chances to block for virtually every enemy.

You are correct that leveling up is the key, because that is precisely what you need to do.  Unfortunately leveling up can take a VERY long time in some parts of the game to achieve survivability.  And since this is asking LONGEST game to speedrun, that is why I put this one down.  You can disagree if you like.

StuporMan
ouch!
probably any of the GTA games would be quite long...

did you know to get the one special cab vehicle in GTA3 you have to do 100 cab missions!!! that is like an hour right there... and there are tons more stuff like that.

Yeah, but even gta sa was completed in under 8 hours i think.

In GT4 for example you have to do 5 24h races in real time, and a lot of other endurance races.
