I play games, wanna fight about it?
It just seems so impossible. How do you people go about trying to get sponsored/partnered?
Thread title:
Obscure games ftw
You play games.  If enough people care, you get it.  A vast majority of people will not, and if that's your only goal, speedrunning is one of the least likely ways to get there-and it's not the point of speedrunning either.

Play for fun, not for money, fame and glory.  The pursuit of the run, not the bottom line.
Waiting hurts my soul...
If you're looking for a way to make money, pursue some basic database or web scripting. You'd make more money getting a nice technology related 9 - 5. Work hard, play hard.

Interesting answers, thanks for responding. Though, its "how do you" not "whats the point and how"

Maybe you're asking in the wrong place.

I would have expected that to be the perfect answer to 'how do you go about trying to get partnership', if I understood that correctly to be 'What did the people who already are partnered do, to get partner'. If I understood that entirely wrong, I'm pulling the foreigner card :þ
I play games, wanna fight about it?
I think I may be asking in the wrong place I guess. But who am I, to judge? which I dont ever. I play for the enjoyment, but what drives me is to be the best; but who knows? maybe thats not what others really want. And my quest to be legendary continues lol
Now Reap The Whirlwind!
People do have good points though. To get to be a big name, you have to provide an entertaining stream that people want to watch. When you have enough viewers show up every time you go online, then you can apply for partner status with Twitch. That's about it. If you wanted to get into professional gaming, that's another matter entirely.
Mind you, being partnered doesn't mean you'll see any big $$$.
Only the very VERY select few can make a living out of streaming, and they usually stream more than regular workhours - 7 days a week.
I play games, wanna fight about it?
Something I plan on doin lol

Well, get a good streaming setup and just go for it. I'd recommend getting a mic and a streaming schedule as well. Just start streaming and work from there
I play games, wanna fight about it?
Got an Audio Technica Mic and for now I'm using an i7 laptop(my girlfriend's laptop..) till Im able to even afford the build I want for streaming. There is a donation incentive on my page as well so anythin helps so I can REALLY get serious and have no life lol
Did i misplace my sexy? I think not
I don't really get the point of going into video games with the intent to make money. I just doesn't make sense.
heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh
I imagine there's a reason it's called "Living the Videogame Dream". In my experience while it's relatively easy to be promised the opportunity to earn money, it's significantly harder to actually earn said money, and it's near-impossible to earn any amount not measured in Zimbabwe dollars (at least, the amount you actually receive). In the unlikely event that you do prove me wrong, however, I have one piece of advice for you: Should you ever receive a written request for becoming a partner or whatever, read it thoroughly. Dispel any illusion of it being your big chance or whatever, just put all that aside and read it. If you notice typos, incomplete sentences and/or any statements that are at odds with what the message or it's owner's site/channel/whatever claims, then delete the message and never look back.

And if all else fails you could try your hand at TASing. Last I checked TASvideos' Pro shtick wasn't an April Fool's joke, though don't count on me for being in the loop there.
I play games, wanna fight about it?
Alright, these answers are very interesting. I can see some controversy here lol. You see, I dont play games just for the intent of making money, let me make that clear; I do it because I want to become one of the best gamers in the world.
Getting paid for what I do is more of a "goal" because lets face it, we all know its possible and for the people that have the time and that can use the time effectively can make more than just a minimum wage job anyday.
Getting sponsorship from game companies help out even more because sometimes they pay your way through some things that are required so you can display what you can do.

Let me tell you what is "My Videogame Dream" I want to become one of the best gamers in the world, traveling to many places far and wide to compete and speedrun. I want to be able to go to places and help make a killing in donations for charities knowing that I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I want to be a celebrity that many respect because I TOOK THE TIME to show many others a bigger level in gaming. Me being paid to do it all is like an artist goin on tour doin their thing so they can be able to get what they want in their life(except I dont know about me getting their ridicolous paychecks lol).

I WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE GAMING COMMUNITY; to show ALL people that sometimes the impossible can be possible, that even one game can help raise money for others(isnt that what SDA proved?) that it takes VERY HARD WORK to get paid and dedicate your time all to it, but it can be possible to succeed in it. Wow what a vision right? Maybe some of you will say that Its all fiction, maybe some of you crave that same ambition to do something, if not gaming, something that will be with you your entire life. I dont know.. but I guess thats why I put this post up. I'm searching for the souls that understand, and want to go as many steps further as possible.
Excellent!
Not much I can add to this topic that hasn't already been said.

If that's your goal, go for it but just remember that it's going to take a lot of time and effort to really be worth it in the end.

The artist formerly known as Qxy
My "The Videogame Dream" is a little different, but I do share the same kind of passion. My goal is to create something cool that someone in the know will appreciate, but which doesn't necessarily have mass appeal. To that end, I'm always experimenting and looking for uncharted territory where I can route a game that doesn't have a large documented history. To me, the art speaks for itself and in time it sits above any artist. I think that also goes back to my a passion for science and why I'm going off to get my Math PhD; the solution, the art of the solution, is how I intend to leave my mark on the world.

Your sentiment and your passion are awesome, Vega. I think that if you want to best capitalize on that passion, you need to have some more direction. If you can do something that has mass appeal, people will eventually come to see that. I don't make a huge effort to sell myself in that regard, and I also don't want/expect to become a celebrity. That in itself requires its own time commitment. I actually recently had a conversation with a popular internet reviewer about the topic, and I think their rule of thumb was 1 business tweet, 1 personal tweet, and 1 random tweet a day, for instance. They also said not to skimp on video and audio quality. If you're going to invest in yourself, actually invest in yourself.

What aspects of your gaming repertoire do you think have the potential to make a difference in the gaming community, and what kind of difference do you think they will they make? How do you want to grow in the future, and if you plan on being a role model, what aspects of yourself do you want others to see in you and emulate?

Nice that you're finally saying what the purpose of this thread actually is xD I thought you might be an artist, because I had the impression that we were talking at each other but no-one understanding what the other person's actually wanting to say (for the reference, I'm a scientist xD).
Best of luck with your dream. If you make it, you'll be my hero Wink
That's some ambition.  I'm just hoping to have a small dedicated group of viewers so that when I jump into a game it's lots of fun to interact with chat while I grind out resets for 6 hours.

I agree. It would be nice to make some money on the side, but essentially I'd just like to share my video game experiences with other people who want to interact and learn.
check your pantry
The problem with "how do you go about getting big" is everyone who streams, ever, wants to get big or at least noticed in some way. There are more people streaming almost every day, and thus fewer that actually will watch. Newsflash: You're probably not going to be the next epic e-celebrity who gets 5k viewers on their twitch stream. It's not that easy.

Actually, I couldn't care less about that. Maybe that's the reason why I don't stream yet (no, my lacking setup and crappy internet are no real excuses, I know xD). I don't see that opinion changing if I ever do start streaming, though ^^

SPEEDruns not SAFEruns
Getting Twitchbux is like anything else - lots of people want it and those who have it have been around awhile (mostly). I feel like if you come into streaming/speedrunning with that as a main goal it makes it more difficult because you are trying to tailor your stream to become another one of many. People don't want ANOTHER cosmo or ANOTHER Trihexx, that want someone who is good at what they do and entertaining. There are loads of people that are better at video games then a lot of the top streamers, but they have different factors that people enjoy. Same reason people will have 2k followers and 3 viewers on the regular. You have to be a top tier speed gamer, and the personality to match - which is what gets most people. I have an amazing career and no need for any monetary gain from playing video games - which is the way I would prefer it. If you plan on making streaming your job just remember while Twitch is at its peak right now, it will most likely (not 100% but it's video games) fall off at some point.
