I'd totally try NG, but I couldn't 1 life it by any means currently :/

Also, I'm getting good at mega man now... I should be able to 1 life it at the event I hope. Although, in my practice attempts I keep having some strange issues come up. I've randomly died from various glitches/idiocy that wasn't my fault quite a few times now. I just happen to be the unluckiest mega man player ever. lol

My personal favorite glitch is when you'll sometimes just take damage and fall right through those "living platforms" that fly around and shoot bullets near the end of Iceman's stage. Of course, by that point it should be a non-issue (You'll have the Magnet Beam), but still, jumping squarely onto the middle of them just to take phantom damage and plummet to my death always pissed me off.

Oh cool!  Well maybe I'll start practicing.  What would be final deadline for joining the festivities?

Heh yea that's why I'm not 100% sure I should do it.
You're going to be there Andrew?  That would be awesome.

Spook: I would say the cutoff should be early December, so December 4th? Also, if you do decide to play Ninja Gaiden for the marathon, you'll have to tell me when you're available, since it sounds like you'll be busy playing in the concert area.
Yes, a ninja riding a tiger.
Yea that's the shitty part.  I play with Temp Sound Solutions but we still don't know which night we're going to be playing.  This usually isn't decided until the week before, and it's never specified on the schedule (usually it just says "concert").  And I'll probably have to practice/sound scheck/bullshit the whole weekend leading up to the show so I do get pretty busy during the earlier part of the weekend.  But anytime after I finish the show is good, and if I'm forced to do a graveyard slot because of it then whatever I should be fine.  I'll let you know what's up.

It would be sweet to see someone running Ninja gaiden for sure. Its such a short and popular game so I guess it can be fit into any small period in the schedule :P?

Games that I would like to comment and about how interested and experienced I am with the game in a scale of 1 to 5.
I havent really tried to calculate how much sleep that schedule gives me yet so probably I will have to say no to a few commentaries if necessary.

Castlevania (1)
Contra III (2)
Donkey Kong Country (4)
Duck Tales (5) (If ZugZwang or someone else runs it thats fine for me)
Ghost n Goblins (1)
Mega Man (2)
Mega Man X3 (4)
Ninja Gaiden (If someone runs it) (4)
Punch out!! (4)
Rush 'n attack (2)
Sonic 2 (4)
Super Mario Bros (5)
Super Mario Bros 2 (3)
Super Mario World (4)
Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles (2)
Turtles IV (3)

-----------------

I am looking forward to play all those games and I guess I will make it trough the schedule somehow and find some spaces for some sleep. I am most worried over the transport to my bed... But I guess we will find a solution for that. I Have been practicing some too and I was in better shape then expected. I even think I would eventually have the chance for setting really good times in a few games. I just need some more time with Mega Man 4 and 5.

I did practice some 2,3,X and X2 - I know those games kinda good after have been running them more then once. I will take a few heart tanks to be safe in Mega Man X.

Metroid - I tried two runs and they ended in 33 and 34 Minutes. Its a very small chance to screw up taking two more energy-tanks then the run and the High jump. I might practice some more to skip another E-tank or two and get the ending time to under 30 Minutes but we will see about that. I'll better be safe then sorry.

Rescue Rangers - Had to Memorize this game again. Haven't played it in a few years. I might die on the final boss but it barely cost any time since you start on the boss again right after. I should beat this game in 11-12 Minutes.

Lion King - I will try to get a very good time on this game on Normal mode. Its a bit of a chance to die and srew up some time but the odds is good.
Yes, a ninja riding a tiger.
I'm excited to see you run anything live, Frezy!  Looking forward to meeting you too.  I would feel incredibly honored to have you do commentary for the NG run if I can actually pull it off.  Tongue

Schedule updated yet again: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Alb3Dj0u13H7dHpTRE9WVHd1TmNXSTctZzdrbkgyR2c&hl=en

The changes are:

-Super Mario RPG's time estimate is now 4 and a half hours. I don't know if that's very accurate, but romscout said the run is definitely going to take longer than 4:15:00.

-Changed Contra: Hard Corps to 25 minutes because I'm going to practice all of the routes and let the audience pick paths for me.

-Added Frezy and romscout as commentators to a bunch of games.

And yes, there is an excel spreadsheet at the bottom of the first post if you want to look at that instead of a google spreadsheet.

Ninja Gaiden: You're right Frezy, it's such a short and popular game we could add it at nearly any point in the schedule and we would be fine. We could even add it at the last second if time allows.

Frezy_Man: I already pmed you about this, but Mega Man 4 and 5 aren't on the schedule anymore because our marathon is actually pretty long right now and they're not very popular games. Also, I forgot to mention this, but I don't think we can run Duck Tales 2 because the cartridge is super expensive and I'm not sure how running something on emulator would work for a stream (not to mention setting it up and everything). You don't have happen to have the NTSC version, do you?

It sounds like Metroid will be well under your 45 minute time estimate. Would you like to make a new time estimate?

I didn't add you as a commentator for Super Mario World because you will sleep less if you commentate for that game. If you want to commentate regardless, I can put you down.

romscout: I didn't put you down as a commentator for Gunstar Heroes because you would have a whopping 3 hours of sleep if you commentated for that game. If you think you can do a commentary running on three hours of sleep, I guess I can put you down. I also put you down as a commentator for Kareshi's games since you mentioned NES, just yell if there's more or less you want to do.

P.S. I'm still practicing, but I don't feel like giving a status report right now.
You got a deletion wish?
Just glancing again: I could comment on F-Zero (probably just because it's immediately after Rygar and Marble Madness which I'm also commenting on), might need some "What2Watch4" notes.

I could also do Metroid ZM, since no one's down for commenting there.
Talk to the Hand
I don't know if you necessarily want me "officially" commentating on them, especially since someone else is on it already, but I'll be around to watch Kareshi's runs (As he's my fellow Shizzie and all) and could probably say a word or two on them.

Did a bit of practice today.
Rygar: 27M34.53S. A bit slower than my previous run, but it was clean (No deaths), if not particularly well-executed. I'm slowly figuring out an overall strategy for Mind Point use; a Recover before the grinding portion is, oddly, looking like a solid choice.
Kung Fu: 4M30.53S. Died on Magician. Also found out that with the right angle, you can actually punch his diagonal fireball out of the air. That's good to know, but I don't know if I'll be able to make use of it at point-blank range.
Marble Madness: 3M47.84S, 14 deaths. Still not particularly well-executed, but it is somewhat fast. >_>

Just felt like giving my 2 cents here. Back in High School I used to consistently get 35ish minutes from start to finish. Unless he does a one-boss run, he's likely not going to need much more than that. I've noticed the game is especially stingy on giving you the necessary refills if there's the slight chance that you MIGHT run out of missiles in Tourian, but never had those problems doing both-boss runs.

And because of that, I can't even beat a one-boss run in under an hour, personally. -_-
Yes, a ninja riding a tiger.
Since I'm on a bit of vacay before work gets hectic for me, I decided to pop in Ninja Gaiden and do some test runs and see how rusty I am.
Try #1 - A big mess, mostly getting familiar with the game again.  Forgot some item locations, fumbled a route or two, died a lot.  Undecided
Try #2 - After a break I went back at it and this time I was a lot better.  Barely messed up at all until 3-2's end jump, and all of 5-3 which continues to be my kryptonite.  In any case I got to the end and died on the demon with one hit left. He was being an aggressive dick with the projectiles but I was only one strike away from killing him.  Cry I turned the game off when that shit happened.
I think if I practice 3 of the problem sections enough and show more patience against the end bosses, I would be good to try this for real.  It wouldn't be super fast but I hope to get around 15 minutes if I make mistakes and maybe 14:30 if I never die.  Didn't time myself but Try 2 probably took 20 minutes.

Just one tips for everyone. Its better to be safe then sorry if you running a game live. Shaving the hardest seconds will probably not be noticed by the audience anyways. But Everything depends on the case... I would just like to warn everyone one more time. We speedrunners just to take way bigger risks then necessary when playing live  Grin

Mega Man 4-5 Canceled sounds fine. Now I can concentrate on the other games instead.

I sold my NTSC DT2 cartridge last year. I will eventually buy a new one soon even if it is too expensive. But Im fine if you cancel the game... I can tell you if I buy the cartridge.

For Metroid. Yes you could chance it to 40 Minutes including the Credits. Hopefully I will beat it under 30 but I can not promise it. Its a bit of a risky game. Invisible enemies and weird hit boxes and other glitches...
Yes, a ninja riding a tiger.
Got a solid 15-16 minute run down, and that was with dying three times.  Not bad, it's just frustrating dying the dumbest of deaths and that's even when I'm playing safe.  I'm glad with my progress anyway.

already mentioned this to mike, but if no one wants to work on a page/site for the marathon i can find time to put something together. anyone else want to do it instead?

sounds like a good idea!

Two quick things: I made a post on my website about the marathon (Don't ask me for a site design; I just use a slightly-modified Wordpress theme). Mike, if I got anything wrong there, feel free to let me know.

The second thing is that we finally have a blurb on the main MAGFest site. There's also this year's MAGFest promotional video on the site as well, although I honestly think I preferred last year's.

Yes, a ninja riding a tiger.
Wow.  After a two death messy run I decided to give it another go and proceeded to have a no death 13 minute run.  It's pretty much the best I've ever done in this game, ever.
I think I'm going to do this live.  Very confident.  You can go ahead and put me on the schedule.  Best scenario would be around 13 mins, but it could reach 15 or 16 with mistakes.  So is there an ideal 13-16 minute spot that I can fit into?
Jumping Turtle
Sounds good, spook, so I'm guessing that's roughly 15 minutes including set-up and ending time? IMO the estimates are so rough and generous that you can pretty much jump in to any spot on the schedule, no problem. Especially considering you're going to be busy at an as of yet undetermined time, I don't think you need to be on the schedule quite yet.

Preferably, I feel Ninja Gaiden should be done some time during a quite active time of the second or third day, next to a game of similar genre (possibly after the Contra games? I've never played it myself, but I imagine it has some kind of correlation).

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I haven't had time to get a little better estimated on these games. So pretty shortly I'll try to give you some better time estimates on these games Mike. What I told you seems to be about right, but on a few games I'm not 100% sure.

From power-on to the end of the credits:
Mega Man - 28 minutes even. - So what I'm sticking with ~30:00

Setting up should be simple enough I imagine, and yea 2nd or 3rd day would probably be best since I will be super busy.  I'd just rather avoid any times during the concerts since I don't know when I'm playing yet.  I wish MAG would release a general schedule soon. :/

My feelings on The Demon Rush
Bad News: Stanski might not be coming to MAGFest. Sad Could anyone be a possible replacement for Sonic 2? Bloodlines is a good game, but I don't think it's diehard essential. Toy Story can be dumped and Donkey Kong is easy to dump or replace. Altered Beast I can do on my own because it's a simple game. But no Sonic 2? That's a crime.

Schedule updated yet again: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Alb3Dj0u13H7dHpTRE9WVHd1TmNXSTctZzdrbkgyR2c&hl=en

-Some minor timing changes (DD2, Metroid).

-Ninja Gaiden added in between the Disney games and Contra around 9:20 am. That shouldn't conflict with your concert, Spook.

-I took Duck Tales 2 out, but stuck it on the bottom just in case if Frezy gets a cartridge.

-Added Enhasa as a commentator for a bunch of games because he said he'd comment on pretty much everything and he hasn't been paying attention to this topic. Tongue

Spook: Sounds good about Ninja Gaiden. I think as long as if you practice regularly and make sure not to try every single risky trick, you'll be good.

Arkarian: I think I already approved you on IRC, but yes, we really need a website for this marathon, and I don't think anyone else is going to make one. If you need help on what to write, we can discuss it on IRC or PM later.

XFUBX: That sounds cool. Not 100% sure I want to contact gaming marathon/news sites right now because it's still about a month and a half before our marathon, and we don't want to send out press releases and everything too early.

Emptyeye: Nice post, I approve.

Practice Update:

Contra: Hard Corps: I now only die for the stupidest reasons (it's usually me trying to shave a second off the game lol), and I can do every path fairly easily (lab, fight path took me two tries to get a good time, but that's about it). And yes, I've done a couple of one-life runs. I'm now contemplating doing a No Items run for SDA.

Contra III: I think I've done 5 or 6 attempts of this game, all but one of them successful. In my unsuccessful run, I died two times in a row in a really bad spot (the fourth boss), and the run was a complete wash from there. No one-life runs yet, but if I stop making the same dumb mistake I ALWAYS make on the fourth boss (I jump too early and just barely miss a missile), I should be okay. Too bad the wash attempt was recorded on Kareshi's live stream (with two successful ones though). Also, if you have to guess which difficulty I'm doing, you don't know me at all. Tongue

Also, Kareshi thinks this game is harder than Ghosts 'n Goblins, which I don't believe. Shocked

TMNT 4: I pretty much have this game down, I just need to figure out the best positioning against stone warriors, because if I screw them up, I get wrecked pretty fierce (they can kill raph in three hits). Oh yeah, and don't screw up Tokka and Rahzar. Both runs I did on Kareshi's ustream went pretty decently too.

I really really need to start practicing X3, Altered Beast, and Gunstar Heroes now. Well, I can always do a run of Gunstar Heroes, but I need to practice enough so that it doesn't look like complete crap. :-/

I can do Sonic 2, but you'll have to push the target time out by five minutes or so cause I'm not nearly as good as stanski at it. That would give me Sonic 1 through Vectorman 2 consecutively (and no race :() but I think I can handle it. I've already done Sonic 1 through Sonic 3 in one go... that took about 2 hours 10, not counting credits, so the targets there seem pretty sound.

EDIT: also, I can probably commentate Super Mario Kart. That should be interesting.

That's about as perfect as I could ask for.  And I like how you're giving me a 20 minute window.  Kiss

Totally understood.  I'm very consistent with a lot of the tricks but some things I will have to hold back on.  I am averaging a couple deaths per play but they're really stupid ones that I should be able to avoid if I don't gung ho it.  I will be practicing a lot.

No Stanski Was BAD news. I already miss Stanski Sad

I may practice some Sonic 2 before MAGfest but I guess that Mike 89 would do it twice as fast as me. My Personal best is 50 Minutes or something. Mega Drive version Tongue I can probably shave of 20 Minutes easilly if I can study the levels a bit more. Thankfully I memorized all the enemies and Maps 10 years ago but I don´t know how to run this game yet Tongue

Btw, If someone else want to play Super Mario kart instead of me that would be fine. I know that there is a bunch of good SMK players BUT YOU have to prove that you drive faster than me in a death match sometime before the show. - WARNING! -I have been practicing a lot... I am in a good shape!  8)
