Quote from Essentia:
If we're going with Zenic's schedule, I was wondering if it would be possible to move DKC2 and Dr. Mario to a different day.  As it is now, I'm playing all my games in one day, which would be almost 8 hours total for me.  To me, that seems like a lot, especially since 6 hours of that will be continuous.  Also, that day is Sunday, and I'd been hoping to go to church sometime that morning.  (I found a church meetinghouse about 7 minutes away that has services starting at 8:00 or 11:30 and lasting for 3 hours.)  Mike's schedule is more preferable to me, although it'd mean I'd be staying up pretty late the night before, so I might be kind of out of it the next day.

Anyway, if it doesn't work out, I'll go with whatever you decide, but I'd appreciate it if you could take this into consideration.

Good point, Essentia.  Actually, I'd like to request that, too.

Honestly as much as we would want to keep runs together categorically what we should really try to do... is focus the big MEATY awesome runs in the "strong" blocks of time where we will (by highest percentage chance) will get the most viewers. We want them to least one big title played awesomely in this time so they can tell other people and get more in... Thus we need to take that into account.

The current method of keeping the games together by grouping/runner would be good but... we are doing this for charity and we want to gather in people. So if we end up (in key hours) doing obscure or lesser of the more known titles they may be astray. But if we string them in between big titles, people might want to watch more.. ya know?

Do you have examples of which titles should really be in the limelight?

Well, seeing as how I'm doing Yoshi's Island at the okay time of 8-10 am, that means that all the instantly recognizable Mario games are being shoved into the 5-8 am region (Based on your list; didn't read Jewyama's Excel sheet yet). Shouldn't those be like, in the prime-time zone or something?

Schedule: What I should have mentioned was that neither schedule was final, and people should be looking at both schedules so I can see what can be changed. We still have plenty of time to schedule everything, so it's not like everything needs to be set in stone right away. I'll try either rearranging my schedule, or making a new one. I'll admit that I just tried to cram all of the Nintendo (company, not system) games together in the second half.

tri-hex: Don't look at my schedule then, lol.

Emptyeye: Yeah, I liked how Battletoads flowed into TMNT too.

XFUBX: You can possibly be an off-site commentator on a separate stream like the speed gamers do. I know tiki wants to race frezy on a separate stream for MM3 and MMX.

Essentia and tjp7154: I can definitely take your needs into consideration. It shouldn't be hard to reschedule the DKC games and make sure you get at least 6 hours of sleep.

Limelight titles: Rane probably means stuff like Mario, Mega Man, SOTN, DKC, Sonic, or Zelda.

Morning people: Technically, I was an all day person, because I woke up at 7 am every day despite going to bed at 2 or 3 am. Sad

<VorpalEdge> if we aren't doing it for charity, why would we do it at all?
<flagonhead> to show how boss we are
<VorpalEdge> lol
<Breakdown> we have the site for that
<flagonhead> to show more people how boss we are
<flagonhead> i'm not against charity or anything
<flagonhead> just feels tacky to me
<Breakdown> well, getting people outside the site to promote for us will be difficult without the charity
<flagonhead> yeah exactly
<Cremator> ...
<Cremator> This is a major setback.
<Cremator> Any suggestions, Joe?
<jewyama> lag, what you said didn't even make sense
<flagonhead> "why would we show this" "some people somewhere get some money" "oh ok"
<jewyama> it's not like we're going to do our best to not play the games
<flagonhead> that wasn't what i meant :p
<jewyama> also I probably shouldn't be so against child's play, but I just don't like the concept :-/
<flagonhead> if people watch the stream and see something that makes them impressed, it seems a bit of a logical leap to then decide to give some unrelated charity some money
<jewyama> thanks scrooge
<flagonhead> should just give sda some money instead!
<LLCoolDave> ...
<VorpalEdge> <icycalm> videogames are more important than medicine
<Breakdown> we don't offer a tax deduction
<flagonhead> haha
<Breakdown> at least I don't think we do
<flagonhead> that's not what i meant either...
<LLCoolDave> I don't see donating for SDA at an SDA marathon to be a viable publicity stunt
<LLCoolDave> it looks pretty selfish
<jewyama> it's a viable publicity stunt for lag
<flagonhead> just that a) x plays game, y gets money makes less sense than b) x plays game, x gets money
<Breakdown> well, it could indirectly lead to some site revenue
<jewyama> then every single charity event doesn't make sense
<flagonhead> this conversation is in no way meant to persuade anybody to try to pursue what i'm saying
<VorpalEdge> wow, lag isn't even being thorough enough in this deconstruction
<LLCoolDave> flagonhead: How many events for donations are in a reasonable way related to the public service the donations are for?
<LLCoolDave> I can barely think of any
<VorpalEdge> i thought you were about to say "why the fuck would anyone donate money? because... people played games?  oh noes, now i need to give money to my five-year-old kid"
<flagonhead> i'm trying to be less emotive
<Breakdown> yeah, what does football players wearing pink have to do with breast cancer?
<flagonhead> ll: i agree! i think charity events are stupid :p
<flagonhead> charity is great, but solitication can fuck off
<flagonhead> plus some letters
<flagonhead> in the right order
<LLCoolDave> flagonhead: ounfortunately, I highly doubt many charities could work well without these events
<flagonhead> i can accept 'guy tells me that he thinks it's a good idea to donate'
<flagonhead> but not 'guy does some feat and recommends i donate'
<flagonhead> give some third world children some clothes because i jumped off a bridge

From IRC (btw, this isn't really worth reading or responding to, it was just too big for my sig I guess lol):

Too bad, I'm responding nevertheless.

Yeah, it's true that these events have almost no real direct correlation to the cause they're fund-raising for, but the point is that they're gathering people that don't mind paying to spectate a free event, because a) it's just that entertaining, and/or b) the money is going to a cause greater than they may ordinarily use it for. It actually does make some sense, because it's the event coordinators that choose to donate a very generous sum of money to a cause they feel like standing for at the time, and in order to donate that much, they need to have that money in the first place. It's not effective enough to say "I believe this cause should have more funding, so help me fund it." People have the fundamental requirement that they need to be given some kind of product or service in order to fork over the cash they earned themselves. It doesn't count if someone else is eventually going to be given something once enough labor is paid for and used. A person feels you have to give him/her something at or around the time that they pay.

So yeah, basically, people are letting themselves get coerced into donating, making it more effective than some random person simply being honestly generous - either that or the honestly generous people have to be given even more reason to donate so that they don't just go broke trying to give to everyone that needs money.

---

...After some thought, I guess he questioned the reason people need a reason to do these kinds of events in the first place. I guess the actual reason is because it takes so much effort to plan and actually do all of this, that they feel they need to have a reason to do so. It's simply not enjoyable enough to them to just do it because it's cool. They're taking a lot of time to produce this event, and if it has no result, then all they did just became a pointless set-back.

It's kind of odd, really. The cause needs an event to fund it, and the event needs a cause to bother doing. One of either isn't good enough, and simply doing nothing is almost as good as both. It kind of feels like this previously fruitless hobby of ours has obtained significance in the meaning of life. Does anyone else feel it, too?

i think charity events are stupid too (i've never donated for one), but apparently a lot of people disagree and donate their money to useful causes for no tangible reason. that can't be a bad thing, right?

however, i believe sda's event at magfest would be just as popular without any charity attached at all. people who like to watch video game marathons will watch them regardless of why the marathon is being played. the reason for the charity is publicity and to make sda and its members look good, which is of course the point of sda. so the charity stuff can't do anything but help (sda and others).

yeah that's why I didn't tell anybody to stop doing it. it can only help.

Practice Update!
Rygar: 27M00S, my best time to date easily. A bit more conservative approach in the early going (Think closer to my old 30:30 run as far as fighting a lot of chickens and such goes) pays big dividends in survivability.
Kung Fu: 4M56S. Died on Boomerang Man (>_<), and also lost a bit of time when the phone range and I quickly checked to see who it was.
Marble Madness: 3M45S. 13 deaths, which is my cleanest run so far. Um...yay?
Battletoads: 26M35S. Not my cleanest run to say the least.
TMNT: 38M47S and a continue. RANDOM FUN FACT: The mutant kangaroo things in the Technodrome can take off two full units of health. Did you know that? Neither did I--until one killed me.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
My practice attempts are going OK...
F-zero - I finally can beat Firefeild and come in 1st most of the time Smiley (15-20 minutes)
Mega man - 4 deaths (30:20) I'm not good enough still :/
Mike Tyson's Punchout - basically I've perfected "good" strategies up to bald bull and can beat the rest decent. Need more practice.
Castlevania - I can now speedrun 1/2 of the game nearly flawless.
Marios - will practice later on.

I'll get better time estimates soon Mike.

EDIT: also, emptyeye, I'm practicing using the 2 player marble.
Talk to the Hand
Excellent, because I totally haven't been. Tongue Using the 2P marble that is...I've been practicing of course.

Arkarian: That's not why we're doing the marathon, maybe some of us would actually like to do something helpful while we're playing video games. Wink

Okay, I made another schedule which you can look at on the same spreadsheet (it's on sheet 3). Yeah, I should probably erase the other two schedules, but they're there for comparison I guess. I think this is the best schedule yet, but I'm obviously biased, so take a look for yourself.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Alb3Dj0u13H7dHpTRE9WVHd1TmNXSTctZzdrbkgyR2c&hl=en

I think the schedule is strong for the most part. None of the big series have graveyard shifts, and most people have good schedules, unless if I'm missing something. A couple of things about the schedule though.

-I'm aware I have it really rough the first day, I did that on purpose.

-The schedule is now easier on Essentia, though it's still a little rough on her considering that Dr. Mario will end at around quarter to 1 and she has a church group meeting at 8. If anyone has any good suggestions on how to solve this problem, I'm willing to listen.

-Frezy's schedule isn't very good, especially towards the end, but I'm really not sure whether it's possible to give Frezy a good schedule without completely messing up the order of some series.

-I know some games could possibly be moved around, like Gunstar Heroes (it's in that spot because I thought it was fairly similar to Contra, but maybe it would do better alongside the Genesis games?).

[hr]

The charity: Okay, St. Jude is out because they still haven't responded. I found a couple of other charities, plus Breakdown gave me the suggestion to use a local chapter or a national charity like Ronald McDonald houses or a local dc-based place like National Children's Hospital. This time I'm going to contact at least 3 or 4 charities at once because we're running out of time.

[hr]

My games:

TMNT 4: Been practicing still, but I need to try an actual run and see what my time ends up being.

Gunstar Heroes: Did a run yesterday, got some of the worst luck possible in the Dice Palace (I think I missed about 3 tiles on the board) and played really badly in some parts, yet my time was still 47 minutes. The ending + credits takes about 3-4 minutes, so my 50 minute estimate is still good. BTW, if I had to guess, missing "THE WAY BACK" in the Dice Palace saves around 2-3 minutes.

Mega Man X3: I still kind of suck at this game. Sad I haven't been putting a lot of time into it though.

Contra 3 + Hard Corps: Haven't really touched these games for a couple of weeks, but I'll get around to it this week (also, I have both games burned into my head pretty well).

Altered Beast: Haven't really started this with stanski yet, but I remember after just an hour or two of pratice with stanski, we were almost ready to do a run.

I like this last schedule the best.  I should be okay with my church meeting, because there's also one that starts at 11:30.  Besides, I'd probably rather go to the later meeting anyway. Smiley

I also like Schedule #3 the best. Smiley

I agree with you on Frezy having it rough near the end, but he's got so many games that I don't think there's a lot that can be done about that.

Charity-wise, remember when I said that I couldn't remember what charity I randomly suggested over AIM that one time? Well, as it happens, I had the foresight to save that conversation. The charity was The Association for International Cancer Research. They're healthy--about 18 million Bison Dollars Pounds--without being so huge that our donation would be meaningless. As I've previously mentioned, a charity having to do with cancer research would mean a lot to me, and probably other people here as well. Smiley

Don't some of frezy's games have possible backup players?
I can do some piano commentary for FF3/6. I do just about the whole soundtrack, so anytime would work (opera scene?)

Aww, I was going to sing during the opera. Wink  No actually, some piano commentary during FF6 would be awesome, I think.
Waiting hurts my soul...
You could reverse the order of Super Mario Bros series, along with Super Mario Kart. That would give Frezy an extra half hour of rest. Might be kind of weird though, I dunno. Mario Kart could come after DKC. And I still think it'd be cool/funny to throw a third person on the Mario 3 race, ya know just because. You could even have a fake status chart. Smiley

lol, so what we have to make Essentia be the third player or what? We might as well just act the ending scene out and forget the speedrunning. We need someone to be the crazy announcer.

Okay, I contacted three charities so far, and I'm going to contact the DC office of a fourth one tomorrow. Emptyeye, I did contact a cancer charity, but it wasn't the Association for International Cancer Research because I couldn't find enough information about them outside of the official site.

Anyway, I contacted:

Children's Health Fund - provides health care to medically underserved children

Cancer Research Institute - Should be self-explanatory

Autism Research Institute - Again, should be self-explanatory

The last charity I'm going to contact is CARE, a charity dedicated to fighting international poverty. If anyone has any other ideas, then I'm open because right now I'm trying to get a charity for a worthy cause ASAP.

Kareshi and Essentia: I would love to hear hear a piano/voice duo during the opera scene. Smiley
Haters gonna hate
Well first off, since everyone else is doing it, here's how my (somewhat limited) practice has been going.

Jackal:  This is a game I don't think I'll have to drill too much.  After not touching it for about 6 months I was able to get to the point of clearing it consistently after a couple attempts.  I'm not holding my breath on getting a deathless run live, but hopefully I'll at least get one where I don't have to hide in the safe spot at all during the last boss as that's easily the biggest thing that'll hurt my time.

Ristar:  I need some more practice on this one as I've lost the feel of the timing on basically all the pole swings.  I'm planning on buying a Genesis between now and Mag though, so if I get the Genny version I'll have audio cues to work with for those which should help a ton.  I've only made one run through it so far which I didn't time and the only really atrocious bit was the big skip in 4-1.  I died a couple times too, but a little practice should iron those out no problem.

Zelda 1:  Think I have a route that with a little more practice I should be able to execute consistently (with no up+a, because I personally feel it to be lame and I think the audience will largely appreciate it it).  The Zelda community won't be impressed by it most likely as it is certainly not a balls to the walls route (though I think I know the best one of those too, might try a real run down the line), but the average viewer should find it impressive, and there's one moment in it that will likely surprise everybody.  I still need to work on it some, but I think it'll go over well.

Haven't touched my other games yet.  EWJ will mostly be just getting the feel back as it was only a little over a month ago that I cranked out the youtube run.  I plan to make a couple detours for safety's sake in Zelda 2 (Shield and 1-ups), and I will backtrack in palace 1 to kill skulls 1 if I don't get a big point bag drop because missing the experience target there would totally screw me, so here's to hoping I hit one of the 50/50 chances there.  My original plan for Faxanadu was to pretty much replicate the route in my run, but there's a few changes I feel really should make which won't sacrifice much in the way of consistency.  It won't be as crazy optimized as Shiner's new run promises to be, but I wouldn't be too surprised if I could comfortably beat my old time.  Just need to hammer it out, which will take some time.

As for the charities, those all sound good, and CARE was actually one I did some work for at my old job.  Hopefully one of them will get back to us soon, because we really need to start moving forward with trying for publicity and whatnot.  My fingers are crossed certainly.
