MM2: I don't mind a 35ish minute time. Most people won't mind as long as if you're fairly fast and don't die much.

TMNT4: The only bosses that might be problems are:

Baxter - Okay, I don't need a safer strategy, I just need to figure out what to do in case if I screw up the first hit.

Rocksteady and Bebop - There really is no safe strategy against these guys. Honestly, the speedrunning strategy is the best way to kill these guys, IMO. I might die here if I screw up Sad

Krang (first time) - If I get hit here, that means I have to change my strategy and let him drop bombs once.

Super Shredder - You have to react quickly, but if I play it safe, he won't kill me if I screw up.

The rest of the bosses are pretty easy to kill (Tokah and Rahzar are not difficult once you learn how they work). The only boss I absolutely cannot screw up is Slash, but he's very easy to kill with the strategy I use in my run. I should still probably try to figure out how to get behind him in case if I screw up though.

The important thing I need to practice is enemy layouts and where the stage obstacles are, shouldn't be too tough though. Also, I'll fight during the bonus stages because I think doing nothing will just confuse people. I should have time to practice tonight so I can give you a status update soon.

So, for referees in case people wanted to submit scores to TwinGalaxies (TG)

Patrick Scott Patterson handles NES games
Tom Votava handles SNES and Genesis games

It might be interesting to invite some TG people to run games live as well. Has anyone thought of making posts on other forums for both advertising and guest runners?

I posted on IRC about a trivia game to play during the event for viewers, and I didn't want it to get lost in IRC logs.

Anyone can play, every 15, 30, or 60 minutes the commentator reads or makes up a trivia question about the game currently being played. The question can be a general one, or be about something that's current happening in the game (e.g. "in about 5 seconds, there's going to be a mostly red colored enemy, what's the name of that enemy? oh, and there it is." or "Battletoads is rated as one of the hardest games of all time, but not a lot is said about the other games in the series. Trivia Question time, what are the names of all the games in the Battletoads series?") Points for each question, prizes based on the points.

Pros: gets the viewers involved and watching more often.
Cons: sharing of info, getting groups of people with all the correct answers.
The only work around I can see for that is to have a FIFO submission process for the answers. The scores can then be weighted based on the time it took them to answer in order to break ties.

There are some obvious logistics to work out such as the submission process.
I'm starting to feel like I should withdraw from doing Punch-Out.

I'm just getting swamped with school and I think it would be in my best interests to just bow out now than attempt to pull it together hastily. Since there are tons of runs already planned, I don't think this will be too much of an issue. I'll still be at MagFest, but as I'm looking at my schedule I'm starting to doubt I'll have ample time to dedicate as much time to the run as it deserves.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
That's fine questionmark, no pressure. We have plenty of games now anyway.

Marathon status: I'll try to write up a preliminary schedule this weekend, with emphasis on preliminary because St. Jude still hasn't responded and I haven't confirmed an exact time to start with Brendan (guy who runs MAGFest). I'm thinking around 4-6 pm on New Year's day, which should be late enough for anyone hungover or tired from New Year's Eve, but early enough for Europeans to start watching (though it is a little late with the 4-6 hour time difference).

Carcinogen, I sent you a PM about this, but I don't think Resident Evil should be run for the marathon, it's really out of place, and now that we went over 48 hours, I'm trying to keep the theoretical time not too far above 50ish hours (around 54 is the max). Like Enhasa said, these things always go overtime, and I don't want the marathon to last more than 60 hours (we want to enjoy a bit of MAGFest too!).

Enhasa, I'm putting you down for Super Mario Bros. 2 because it's short and it's a Mario game.

Now here's a status update on the games I'm running.

Contra Hard Corps: Played this twice yesterday, the first time I died something like 4 times (!), but I still got a time around 18 minutes. The ending credits are around 2 and a half to 3 minutes, but most of that is credits so we can definitely cut the ending early if we're strapped for time. The second time around I only died once in a really stupid spot (beginning of the jungle stage), and got a time of around 17-17:30. As long as if I practice occasionally, I'll have no problem running this game during the marathon. Also, I'll keep my estimate of 20 minutes.

TMNT 4: I haven't made any real attempts, I've mostly been practicing stages on emulator. I'll make some real attempts sometime this weekend.

Gunstar Heroes: Only played this game a bit, I need to practice my flame chaser again and figure out the best stage to tackle first in case if chaser doesn't pop up right away.

Contra 3: This one is a bit of a problem. The beginning is pretty random and I might need to reset within the first 30 seconds in case if really unlucky happens like a red soldier popping up and firing a bullet in my face. Sad I can still beat the game if I die, but my firepower is dramatically reduced if I die. I'll have to make up a  bunch of contingency strategies. I beat the game in around 16 minutes, with one death I think (it was pretty stupid too), and the ending is something like 3-4 minutes long including credits, so my estimate of 20 minutes is still good. The problem were the couple of attempts I didn't beat the game because I either hit the reset button out of reflex, or in one case, botched the alien gauntlet in the final stage so badly I had no chance of recovering. Sad Solution: bomb if I die, though that makes the heart battle really shitty, hmmm...

It's possible I'm just rusty (I went in with no practice), but I still need to make up contingency strategies in case if I die.
I want off the ride....
Well I can't say i've made any real progress with

Castlevania 2; I still dont have a contingency plan for screwing up the early game farm to the left. There is the save old 48 min route of farming but... I've been practicing the JPatrick method of trying to get a NO DEATHS play I think that'd be more interesting... I'd just need to find a way to really work out heart farming in my favor... but this is only assuming Kareshi won't play 2... He probably could since he already has the practice initiative to do so..

C:SoTN; I recently raced Romscout for lols one night. I died twice (horrible bad cocky deaths) but I am still on par... I also figured out how to dash nearly as fast as Satoryu so speed has gone up a little bit... just need to build up the longevity.

I am also playing SoM on the side incase one of you 3 need to take a break for a bathroom or food or something. So that the run can continue... CONTINGENCY FTW
My feelings on The Demon Rush
That's great you're playing SoM on the side Rane. Food and bathroom breaks were something I didn't even consider. :-[

You should PM or IM Kareshi and see if he would like to play Castlevania 2 for the marathon. I know he has mentioned it before, but didn't say anything aside from trying to master the heart farming.

SOTN: Sounds great, is your estimate still an hour? That seems awfully long, even if your run is going to have more mistakes than Satoryu's. Maybe 50 minutes is a better estimate?
Everything's better with Magitek
I might as well post my status on the games I'm playing.

Donkey Kong Country 2:  I probably won't be able to make it through without any deaths, but luckily they usually don't cost too much time.  I did a runthrough the other night that had about 10 deaths (it was late and I couldn't focus), and it took just a little over an hour, so I should be able to make my time estimate.

Dr. Mario:  If you still want me to do this, I need to figure out which version to play.  I have both the NES and N64 versions, but I can't guarantee that my NES cartridge will work very well.  I'm a lot more familiar with the N64 version, although it might not fit in with the 8- and 16-bit theme.  However, it would be shorter on the NES by a few minutes because it has one less level.

Final Fantasy 6:  I've been practicing on the PS1 version, since my brother took back his SNES cartridge, but I'll get it back before the marathon.  The PS1 version is pretty much identical, except it has slower loading times.  I'm thinking about making a change to my route that would cost a couple minutes, but it would be much safer.  The Tentacles battle in the WoR is so random - sometimes I win with no problem, and other times I get wiped out.  I was terribly lucky in this battle on my SDA run, but now I'm thinking I was insane to do it that way.  Now I'm thinking about getting Sabin before fighting them, so I'll have another person in that battle.  It'll take longer to get him, since I won't have the Moogle Charm, but to make up for it, I've found an improvement at the beginning of the run (in the very first battle, actually) that should save a couple minutes. My feelings on The Demon Rush
Essentia: Good to know you're practicing your games. I'm sure people won't mind (or even notice that it's a detour) if you collect Sabin for the FF6 run.

Dr. Mario version: I think the NES version would be preferable because people are more familiar with it. Also, if we used the N64 version, we'd have to hook up an N64 for just one game (not a big deal, but annoying).

Molotov: Is the 5 and a half hour estimate accurate for SoM? Enhasa pulled that estimate out of thin air, and you've actually been practicing a bunch so you would have a better idea how long a run would take.

Emptyeye: Your Rygar progress sounds like the time estimate should be a flat 30 minutes, am I correct?

Breakdown: Is it okay if I take Jackal and/or Wizards and Warriors 2 off the list? You're already going to run a lot of games, and while Jackal is a good game, it's not incredibly popular. It's also weird to have Wizards and Warriors 2 without the first game.

Oh yeah, I didn't mention X3 in my progress report. I haven't really touched the game. :-/

Eeeeeehhh. Not that the ending to Rygar is particularly long, but if I really can't beat 29:XX for just the run (Not counting setup/title screen display [I like to display it for 5-10 seconds just so everyone knows what I'm playing]/ending), I'd rather leave it as-is. I was under the impression that we were including setup time and ending into our estimates. Of course, hopefully I'll manage a no-death run eventually, and get the time down into the 27-28XX range for the run itself.

I haven't practiced anything since Saturday. Long story short: A family situation came up that requires my attention.

Fair enough, Emptyeye. Do you want to keep your Turtles time estimate the same? It sounds like you might want to increase it a bit, but maybe that's just me.

Oh yeah, one thing I should mention is that our game list is basically finallized. There are only a few games I can think of that would really help out at this point (look at the first page for the list), and we've passed the 48 hour mark by a good margin.

Frezy_Man: Do you have an NTSC copy of Duck Tales 2? I'm asking because the game is really expensive (I think it's 50+ dollars on ebay), and MAGFest staff might not have it.

EDIT: Made a (very) preliminary schedule that's attached to this post. I think it's okay because I grouped series together, but I'm sure it needs some fixing. I didn't fill in a lot of commentary spots because I'm not sure who wants to comment on what. I just put in 5:00pm as the starting time because I want to start somewhere around 4-6 pm. By the way, I used 24-hour time because it was just easier for me to calculate things that way.

There were two things I prioritized.

-I tried to make sure each person could get some sleep if they were doing a lot of games (Frezy, Breakdown)

-I grouped series together, and if there was no series to hold games together, I tried to group by a loose theme, like Genesis games or beat 'em ups.

I didn't time either of my runs, but I do know I spent a lot of time shopping in my latest attempt. I'll stopwatch my next playthrough and let you know how that goes, but I can't really imagine our run taking longer than Seiken's current SDA run (5:15).

And since everybody else is giving progress reports:

Aladdin: I still manage to randomly suck, so the real thing could vary from 0 - 2 deaths. In particular, I'm most worried about 2-2 (stupid logs), 3-2, 4-1, and 4-3. For 4-1, I'm going to play it super safe and I don't care what anybody thinks. Being a showoff over a huge pit of doom is just not smart. 3-2 is simply because one hit is death and I'll likely be nervous. 4-3 is an easy spot to lose time on, but death shouldn't be an issue unless I have a stupid attack.

Regardless, I'm still confident I can beat the game in under 20 minutes. I'll need to practice fighting Jafar without the birdpot strategy before MAGFest though, just to be sure I won't embarrass myself if the trick doesn't work. Tongue

SOS: I figured a freak death would be the thing to fear here, but I've since found something worse. The boat has 3 choices at the start: turn left, turn right, and turn (direction) then (other direction). I'll be giving the boat a few seconds after the turn to avoid a death, but I still lose a huge amount of time if it turns twice. In one of my practice runs, it did that twice in a row. If it does that at MAGFest, that would be a disaster.

In terms of execution though, I'm not worried.

Anyway, I should mention that I don't own the North American version of Aladdin. I don't know how hard it would be to find at MAGFest, but somebody might need to bring a copy regardless. To be really paranoid, I could just pack my modified SNES and the cartridge, but it shouldn't be necessary. Smiley

(On the other hand, if I somehow forget to pack SOS...)

Okay.  I haven't actually played the NES version in years, but there's not really any difference.  My brother said that our Dr. Mario cartridge works as long as you don't bump the NES (this was in a top-loading NES, I believe), but I don't know if it would be possible to get a more reliable cartridge.

I know I'll definitely need some breaks during my FF6 run (especially considering how pregnant I'll be at the time), so I've been finding places in the run where there are long cutscenes.  During those, I can just hand the controller to someone else and have them mash A while I'm gone.  Fortunately, there are enough of these spread throughout the run that I should be okay.

Just replying to stuff in general:

RE: TMNT: The proud side of me wants to say "Hold on before we go raising that estimate; I haven't really practiced the game so that I know for sure what the best and worst-case scenarios at M8 will be." The practical side of me is admitting that raising it a couple minutes (Again, if for no other reason than to take setup and ending time into account) would probably be a good idea. Say 33 minutes or so. Hopefully, that'll take the worst-case scenario (That doesn't involve mercy-killing the run) into account once I've fully realized my speedrunning potential.

RE: The schedule: Looks good to me. I'll be done fairly early as far as running goes, which is nice. And while there will obviously be people doing more/harder stuff, Battletoads and TMNT one right after the other is probably one of the more difficult 1-2 punches on there. Any word on if the AVGN is coming to M8?

(By the way, if we go the guest commentator route, you should probably specify whether you want the AVGN persona [Who is..well, we should all know what that's like], or simply James Rolfe [The guy who plays him, whom I understand is actually pretty soft spoken when not playing the AVGN])

RE: Essentia: By the way, will we be seeing Baby Essentia (Well, maybe Toddler Essentia by now) at MAGFest? That'd be neat if so. Smiley
Also, I'll be happy to button-mash a cutscene or two, although maybe we should have frezy_man do that. His mashing skills are the stuff of legend. Oh, and I have a Dr. Mario cartridge I could bring, though I can't guarantee its reliability.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
TMNT: Fair enough, you'll probably have a better time estimate as you play through the game more.

AVGN: Brendan said it's very hard to contact AVGN, and he's not 100% sure if AVGN is coming.

BTW Emptyeye, is there any period in that schedule that looks like a good time to commentate for you?

Baby Essentia: If she comes along, maybe she can mash the buttons during cutscenes for Essentia. Cheesy

TMNT 4 Status: I played through the whole game tonight on an emulator (no savestates, just fast-forwarded through the boring stuff), and I'm proud to say I didn't die. I made plenty of other mistakes, but overall I didn't have too much trouble getting through the game. I'll try to tighten up the run and give a more accurate time estimate this weekend.

She's a toddler now (wow, hard to believe).  Unfortunately, she most likely won't be coming; it'd just be much easier without her, and I wouldn't mind a break from mom duty either.  My husband and I have plenty of relatives around who'll be able to watch her while we're gone.  I'll bring some pictures of her, though. Yeah i'm really sorry about my C:SoTN estimate, 50:00 is probably a worst case (with ending credits) I said an hour forgetting that the test run I did for 200.6% was focused on map % and took some time to view the map. (I had taken my estimate from there!) So thats pretty bad.

THe best I can guarantee for Castlevania 2 is <50 minutes as well...

EDIT: I have a copy of aladdin for the SNES i can bring

well if you need someone I'm sure I can be a 'hand off' guy, and I can generally remember stuff well so that if you taper off for too long, I can continue in a safe fashion to the nearest point or something. But its probably best if people who have longer runs have a contingency in case emergencies or nature chooses to arise in the middle of the run.

Commentary, huh?

Well, as far as games I know reasonably well (READ: Have beaten at least once) that are in blocks, there's Mega Man 2 and 3, the Castlevania block, the DKC block, and for individual games, I wouldn't mind doing Zelda II (Since I know the pain of speedrunning it in some form, though not as hardcore as how Breakdown will be doing it) or popping in during parts of FFVI (Although I take the "FFVI is an incredible half a game" opinion on it). Of course, you're the guy running it, and if you decide to throw me on, I dunno, SOS or Ristar to see how I commentate "on the fly" so to speak, I'll willingly run with it. As long as you keep me away from the Genesis games, there's actually a decent chance I'll have played enough of a random game on the list to be able to BS my way through commentary for it. Smiley
You got a deletion wish?
Games I can comment on (running off the Mike list):

Mega Man 3 - Be nice to see Frezy return to his debut title.
Rygar - Emptyeye, any notes worth mentioning?
Marble Madness - Short and sweet.
Toy Story - Stan's got a friend in me, though I haven't heard the song in a long time.
Sonic 2/3 & Knux (and 1 if replacement runner is found) - Stan, is the :18 EH1 bounty still on the table?  Might be worth mentioning at the start.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
We're gonna have to hook up people doing the runs with commentators so they can know exactly what to watch for. That shouldn't be a big deal, it can even be done when we arrive. Had something else to say, forgot it.
Everything's better with Magitek
I just thought of something we could do for games that allow you to rename the characters (such as FF6 and Secret of Mana, don't know if there are any others): We could auction off the characters' names.  It could be something like, "The next person to donate such and such amount will get to choose the name of the character" or "The person who donates the most in the next 10 minutes will get to choose the name".  The Speed Gamers did some of this during their Final Fantasy marathon; someone actually donated something like $1500 to have every character in FF7 named Sephiroth.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
That is a good idea. I can't believe someone would pay that much just to get everyone named Sephiroth, but hey, it worked. The only issue with this kind of thing is, are people just donating money that they would have donated anyway? It's not a negative either way, couldn't hurt.

We could replicate that in lesser form for the other games. Person who donates the most in x minutes gets to sponsor the next run. So then the commentator could announce who the sponsor is before and after (or if it's long enough, maybe even during) the run.

This reminds me of all the school activity fundraising type stuff. I was in band, did anyone else have "happygrams?" Pretty funny name for it but people could pay to have the people in the booth read off messages like "go sarah! you're awesome! love mom and dad" Tongue
My feelings on The Demon Rush
That's a great idea, Essentia. Like Enhasa said, it's pretty much a win situation.

Maybe I could do something similar with Contra: Hard Corps and routes. Unfortunately, it's not nearly as popular of a game as Final Fantasy 6 or Secret of Mana. :-/
I want off the ride....
Well; it would probably hurt me a bit more than help, but you guys could probably also put a price on making me do SoTN with LUCK MODE instead of normal mode.... And then pay (if luck mode) NOT to keep my equipment. I can still beat the game this way, but the 1 hour would be accurate then...; But thats something that could be discussed.

That is something to really also consider is... highest donation could determine play mode. I know mike was thinking this, but there are other games on this list that it could apply to (X4 if its run.. donno if it is)
