03:46 - I forget at the moment but it's not possible to release the insects leg? You have to wait for it to break off?

Yes, you have to wait for it to get ripped off.

Rule #1 of falling physics: Jumping over and edge is always faster then falling off of it, so long as you don't have to fall straight down.
@feasel

technically speaking it is controlling the character, but it doesnt matter at all tttt. im not an expert on sda ruleset so i wont complain.

Zech48:  Does what i described in the last post sound like what you had in mind?  I'm having a hard time consistently getting the box wedged in the door and then climbing over it in time.  I'm wondering if i'm not doing it quite the same way you are.  For one thing, i'm not sure exactly at what point it's best to let go of the tire.  Would it be a lot of work for you to make video?  Or even a verbal description of how you do it would help.

not really, i think maybe you should try letting go before you back into the wall so that the tire has some extra hangtime. if that doesnt work i could make a clip easily, its hard for me to remember because i just did it first time every time

also i forgot to mention the minecart trick was genius, props for that

pretty much

jump. and it requires the swinging maggot

05:01 - I just might contradict myself on this one but isn't it faster to jump over the ladder all the way down instead of climbing a bit down the ladder first? Or do you die from the fall?
you die without the jump either

iirc it doesnt work there

I just tried speed running Limbo and got 51:43. I died about 6 or 7 times (I know that's bad), but they were careless mistakes. I know I can do better. Also, I got the tire jump trick (by feasel) on my first try in this run. I've still not perfected it though.
Here's the run:

difficult and stupidly random
I didn't see that there had been new activity in this thread (since apparently my SDA alerts were being eaten by my spam filter 8-O).

@Zech48:  I think I'm starting to get the hang of pulling that tire instead of pushing it.  It's still kind of risky, but it's getting better with practice.  Thanks for the tip.

@xxTDGPainxx:  Glad to see there's more interest in the game.  I'll check the run out when I get a chance.

@Limbo fan:  Thanks a lot for the tips and encouragement.  Nitpicky details are great.  See below:

Quote from Limbo fan:
01:08 - I feel there is a bit of excessive hopping right here, just drop over the edge and grap the rope instead of jumping over the edge.

I believe that walking off the edge would cause you to grab the rope a little higher than if you jumped off it.  And in general when dropping off a ledge, it is like SirVG says: if you jump ahead of time, you'll already have some downward momentum when you begin your fall.

Quote from Limbo fan:
02:21 - Do you really need that much momentum to jump over the trap?

I overdid it slightly, but not by much.  You need some momentum in order to get a running jump, and the hitbox on those bear traps is pretty unforgiving.  Since it's towards the beginning, maybe I could be more aggressive here.

Quote from Limbo fan:
11:52 - I notice that you somehow skip the "zombification" animation when you're being "possessed" by the larva (that little dance he does) - how do you do that and why don't you do it any other time?

I try to do it every time, but it is pretty difficult to get.  I think I only got it 2 out of 4 times in this run (and I expect that my final run will not be any better).  It is done by turning around to face left in the split second between the time when the dispenser is triggered and the time when the slug actually hits your head.  The one with the swinging dispenser is easier to do.  Basically the key is that if you're already facing left when it hits you, the animation will be skipped.

Quote from Limbo fan:
02:46 - Perhaps you can time the swinging a little bit better? I actually don't know what the best scenario is here -
1. to land as close to the edge as possible or
2. get as much momentum as possible by swinging to "boost" when you release.

You're right, the swing timing needs work.  The crane rises very slowly, so the best scenario here is probaly just to get off the thing at the earliest possible moment.  I'm picturing jumping off the rope and grabbing onto the corner of that ledge (so you're actually hanging off the ledge) and then climbing up.  It's probably not worth it to wait until the boy is high enough that he lands feet-first.

Quote from Limbo fan:
04:05 - Again, excessive jumping - try not to jump over the edge, and if you have to, jump so that you don't hit anything on the way down :).

Yeah, I shouldn't have jumped there.  This is just an execution mistake.

Quote from Limbo fan:
05:01 - I just might contradict myself on this one but isn't it faster to jump over the ladder all the way down instead of climbing a bit down the ladder first? Or do you die from the fall?

It's too far to jump directly off the platform; you've got to climb down a bit.

Quote from Limbo fan:
06:08 - Can't you use the brilliant tactic of pulling one box while pushing the other? (You do this in part 4 - 03:23... it's a GREAT tactic, something I would have NEVER figured out).

It really seems like there should be a faster way to do this puzzle, but I've timed several variations and I haven't found anything better than what you see here.  The problem with moving both boxes at once, is that the second box takes so long to arrive.  I've already got the first box most of the way over by the time the second one drops.

Quote from Limbo fan:
13:37 - You jump away from the box instead of just dropping.

Hmm.  Somehow I had thought that the way I was doing it would be faster than what you're suggesting, but upon review I think I may try it your way next time.

Quote from Limbo fan:
02:17 - Do you think it is possible to get on the right side of the box before it's shot down?

Yes it's possible, but I think only if you skip flipping the switch (to send the elevator back down).  So you'd have to flip it later when you're pushing the box leftward and waste time waiting for the elevator, which would be slower.

Quote from Limbo fan:
03:09 - Isn't it possible to stand a little bit to the right of the magnet switch, jump left and trigger the switch at the same time? I would think you can gain a couple of footsteps or about 0.5 seconds if it works.

That's interesting.  I'd lose some time by triggering the switch later (because I'd have to walk past it, turn around, and jump), but I would gain some time having that forward momentum while the gravity is shifting.  I'll have to time it and see if the latter outweights the former.

Man, everybody has been so helpful.  Thank you.  I'm doing attempts regularly, using a revised strategy based on the suggestions I got.  The route is a bit riskier now (esp due to the tire jump and due to the tip about pulling the tire, both of which have killed some good runs), plus I'm trying to be a bit more aggressive about my platforming so I end up missing some jumps (usually run-killing).  So it is taking quite a few attempts to get everything right.
Just got this game for the PS3 and played through it a couple times.  Love it!  Watched your run feasel and thought it was very well done, i have a couple small ideas for timesavers, but need to go back still and see how they compare to what you had.  I may give this run a go after playing it a bit more...
difficult and stupidly random
Yeah I got kind of burned out on running attempts for it.  I want a perfect run, but there are a couple tricks that just keep killing my runs.  I took a break for a few months and then picked it up again right before SGDQ.  I'll continue to do attempts sporadically, but i'm spread pretty thin at the moment so it's kinda creeping along.  I'm always interested in suggestions for improvement.  If you decide to work on the game too let's definitely share ideas.
Hi guys,

Just a little post to let you know that I'm casually speedrunning Limbo.
At the moment, my best attempt is at 48:09 with 3 deaths and some mistakes.

I'm running on the PC version.
Are there any differences with the xbox or ps3 versions ?
Fucking Weeaboo
About the only difference between the PC and Xbox version is the added area for the bonus achievement (DING!) on the PC version. Otherwise as far as I can tell from having played both, they play exactly the same.
Ok thanks Sir VG.

I've just improved my last run : now i'm at 47:11 with 1 death and some mistakes here and there.
F*ckin' sanity effects...
That's awesome!  I'd love to see your best attempt(s) and certainly would want to watch "the run" when you get it.
A new run tonight before I go in holidays...

This time it's a 46:21 with no death but still some mistakes like missing two times a rope at the beginning.
But I succeed the tire jump in this one Tongue

Part of a balanced breakfast.
I've wanted so badly to speedrun the PC version of this game, but I'm having a technical issue. I have the game on Steam, but at the same time I want to keep track of my time on WSplit. Unfortunately, for this to be possible, both of the windows need to be active at the same time. Is there any way to do this? I have Windows 7, in case that makes a difference.

About the actual run, I found a bit of a shortcut completely by accident. I actually died at the section where you are holding onto the chain over the saw blade while the room is rotating. The game respawned me further ahead, to the point where the room stops rotating and you have another switch to activate. If I can replicate this, I will post a video here. If you're doing a deathless run obviously this won't be useful, but if you're not picky, this might cut a few seconds.

Thanks in advance for the help!

EDIT: Couldn't replicate the death warp. Wouldn't have mattered in a deathless run anyway. Oh well.
Hi cooopercrisp,

I'm also running the PC version on W7 and I'm using WSplit at the same time.
To do this you must launch Limbo in windowed mode : go in \Steam\common\Limbo (or any directory where Limbo is installed).
There you will find a settings.txt file where you have to modified this section :

# Start limbo in windowed mode #
windowedmode = true

By the way no improvement since my 46:21 Undecided

I already tried that and it didn't work for me.
