Woot
I am a member of a college organization called the guild at park university and they are doing a gaming marathon which includes a speed-running exhibition to raise money for a book scholarships. I was told by the runner of the club that they need permission from the company's that made the other games in order to use it to make money even for charity. Is this the case with speedrunning? Am I going to need to get permission to speedrun Super Metroid and metal gear? If anyone could give me some answers I would be thankful, I can't find anything on the internet but the club is sure about having a certificate of permission.
Thanks

I would suspect that isn't the case. Plenty of speedrun marathons benefiting charities take place on Twitch with small, to large numbers of people watching.

As for GDQ needing to ask for permission, I also doubt it, but a GDQ staff member would know more about that.

Unless this is something specific to the way things are ran at your school, I'd say no, no permission necessary
