I'm looking to buy a laptop primarily to use as a cheap, functional USB music server, but I also want the dual purpose of using it as a retrogaming PC. So 8/16 bit console emulation, plus MAME and Neo Geo stuff. Basically something I can drag with me, boot up and play a quick game of Castlevania or Contra on the road. I know emus aren't perfect, but I can't carry an NES or Neo Geo around with me, along with every possible cart I'd want to play.

Any suggestions for what would work best for that purpose? I know virtually nothing about laptops and how much power one would need to run those emulators at full speed.

Depends on how accurate emulation you want, if you want really accurate, you will at least need a laptop powerful enough to run Higan's accuracy core for SNES emulation. And BizHawk's modified Gambatte core for GameBoy(Color)
Unfortunately I am not sure of the specs needed to run them, but I know they're fairly high, emulating entire systems accurately is a processing-heavy task.
