I have been interested in practicing this game for a while now but I thought I would wait until after AGDQ. I searched for posts on this game but all I found were locked posts from many years ago. So I thought I might start up a KDC thread!

Kirby's Dream Course is an interesting "golf" game that requires a high amount of timing and skill to be able to go through the game quickly and with the lowest amount of strokes possible. I was thinking that people may want to see trick shots for lowest strokes possible. While the TAS is out there, there are several other ways to go about playing different courses in this tricky, yet potentially exciting game.

I read the locked threads and it was a concern that going for lowest strokes isn't exactly going as fast as possible, but in my eyes it can be equated to 100% runs compared to any% runs. If a fastest possible time is requested, not going for lowest strokes possible or hole-in-ones could be an alternative.

If there is anyone willing to help decide any controversial decisions about running the game, or if people would like to help me get this game's runs rolling, then that would be much appreciated. I am more than willing to work with others on this and contribute as much as I can.

While I don't have any recorded runs at the moment, I am getting equipment set up to be able to share my gameplay and my findings. I have been trying to find resources on how to discuss the strategies behind this game.

To start off the discussion, I thought I'd post some info on how to go about running the game and sharing ideas...

Sharing Shots

I was thinking of how sharing shots could be made more easily than taking screenshots so I thought people could use these methods...

1. Refer to a hole of a certain course to something like, "1-5," or "C1H5."
2. When referring to how to set up a shot...

When aiming with L or R, Kirby aims at these 8 directions...

12 O'clock
2 O'clock
3 O'clock
4 O'clock
6 O'clock
8 O'clock
9 O'clock
10 O'clock

For example, in C1H1, I would say the initial shot for the most optimal hole is 2 right from 2 O'clock.

So, I would press L twice to get to the 2 O'clock direction, then press right twice to get the perfect direction. Once that is done, I would ready my shot and press right once to set the curve.

Then, I would ready the power of the shot...

Disregard the curve on the picture. It should be one to the right.

Notes On Power

1. Power of the bar increases by 1 every 2 frames.
2. Max power is 1 frame after full bar

When it's all ready it should look like this

Transparent Kirby Ball:
Indicates when you should boost with pressing A.

Marker:
Indicates where the marker should be before you make your initial shot.

Let me know if you're interested in making something like this and I can share the files I used to create this image below

(thanks to the course editor for the whole picture of the hole)

Thread title:
Awesome dude. So sick that this exists, because I also have been interested in running it. Props man and thanks
I wonder if intentionally getting just shy of a hole in one and then shooting again very quickly saves time, so you dont watch the hole in 1 cutscene?>
Awesome! Glad someone else is interested! I'm still trying to get my stuff set up so I can record from console.

I have thought about that but I'm not sure how fast it is. I'll have to try it out sometime soon. Getting a lowest score and an any% run would be good. I'll try to get some recorded times in to see how fast certain shots are compared to others. I'm still just figuring out the most optimal hole-in-one's. I didn't notice, but apparently a lot of snc's videos are still tool assisted. He just didn't mention. So some shots are just too demanding of timing to actually do consistently. Especially the ones that require you to boost on hills and such. Sad
I have been testing out shooting just short of a hole in one and it does help time for sure. Saves about a half a second to a full second in most cases.
Wow, what perfect timing! I just decided I might want to try and run this game too.

When I was notating my shots, I picked N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W and NW, with north being straight up on the screen.

I definitely think that some shots are just too inconsistent for lowest score to be considered 100%. I was thinking unlocking the extra courses and completing that would be 100%, while just completing all 8 courses and beating Dedede would be any%. The other option for categories would be any%, all courses and all gold medals. I'm just worried about getting an any% run put together right now.
Those are some good options! After a bunch of practice I would have to agree with you haha. For example, I don't know if it's just me, but even getting a hole in one consistently on the last hole of course 1 is a nightmare.

While I agree on the extra courses part, don't you think getting all gold medals would be good for the 100% run? It doesn't require you to get the lowest score possible on every hole. While it's still kind of demanding, it's not too demanding. I believe that getting all golds can be consistent if a lot of practice goes into it.
Yeah, I think I agree with you that all golds could be considered the 100% run. Now it's time to practice enough to see if you or I can consistently get golds on all the courses.

I'll be practicing today on stream because I just got my capture card to work Smiley If you need any help gathering ideas on how to complete certain holes let me know.

Not sure if it's appropriate to post it here but I have my channel at http://www.twitch.tv/opus614

Yeah, I've got a pretty reliable route for the first 3 courses mapped out. There's 3 holes that sometimes give me trouble, so any help on 2-2, 2-5 or 3-1 would be useful ( or any improvements to course 3). I can reliably get silvers, but not always gold.

For reference, here's my shot count per hole if I don't make any big mistakes.
Course #: 1    2      3    4      5      6    7      8    Tot
Course 1: 1,    2,    1-2, 1,    1,    2,    1,    2      10-11
Course 2: 1,    2,    1-2, 1,    2,    1-2, 1-2, 1-2  10-14
Course 3: 2-3, 2-3, 1,    1-2, 2-3, 1-2, 1,    2      12-17 (Problem because gold is 16 Edit: Misread something, 17 is actually gold too)

2-2 is not completely reliable. Currently just going 3/4 power and bouncing before triggering the shock ability. Ideally it takes out 1 or 2 of the enemies at the bottom, but sometimes it doesn't hit any.
2-5 I think I have a trick that works well, but if I miss it I end up careening off the course and losing my wheel power.
3-1 is more a matter of execution, so I probably just need more practice.

Is this the best spot to post all of our individual hole strategies? I haven't used these forums to plan a run before, so I don't know how people usually put together a plan.

I think it should be fine to post here. I mean, there are hundreds to thousands of posts on other games. We can always organize it later.

The trick for 3-1 is to get the power to here on your initial shot...

...and it should land you...

http://i.imgur.com/C1R6A3Z.png

After this this is what I did...

Luckily this hole is a little versatile. The forward spin is pretty lenient, but the power should be around the 3/4 mark again because you want Kirby to hit the first third of the trampoline.

I'll need to get back to you on 2-2 and 2-5 because those are giving me trouble.
Weegee Time
The forums are a good place for communicating and making plans.  As the routing solidifies, you might want to make use of the Knowledge Base to put everything in order for yourselves and future runners.

I played the daylights out of this game when I was younger.  It's nice to see some interest in it.  Carry on! Smiley

Thanks a lot! I was a little intimidated by that page and wasn't sure if I was allowed to edit anything hah

Sorry I haven't been so active. I have had a lot of audio engineering stuff to do so it's been hard to squeeze any free time in.

I did find this during my practice the other day though...

Just a little glitch where if you double tap A when selecting your spin, Kirby's animation kinda freaks out. It's not useful at all but I thought it was a little amusing.

I've been double tapping A because of all the 1 to 2 frame inputs. I do the same when I play fighting games so I thought I might try that. It helps a little bit. Especially for when you need to boost at certain times.

Hopefully I can stir some more info up soon!
I timed out the first hole doing both a hole in one vs hitting the cup full speed to bounce over and then hitting it in to avoid the hole in one cutscene and found that they were almost the exact same time. Maybe 0.2 seconds faster at most.

Hole in one times: 26.00, 26.08
2 shot times: 25.8, 26.4 (this one I charged up to full power to try to save travel time)

Also, on hole 1-1, I compared the TAS technique of [NE -> 2 clicks + 1 curve to the right] VS [NE (no changes)]. Both can easily result in hole in ones, but with having to key in the inputs on a normal controller meant the TAS technique took 0.8 seconds longer. Long story short, I think shots with shorter inputs are going to be the way to go for a non-TAS run.

I finally got an emulator and screen capture working for me, so hopefully in the next couple days I'll post a video of me running the first 4-5 courses.
Just Horsing Around
I don't really have notes on anything but I've done a couple runs of this for gits and shiggles so I guess I have a couple things I could say.

Remember that the times on nico are from power on until the end appears on screen at the end of the credits

also once you sink the 8th hole on a course you want to reset the console to skip the score tally and kirby dance scenes.
Managed to kind of record a run of the first 4 courses this morning. Video froze a couple times, but I just wanted to get something up there showing my current shots. Courses 1 and 2 went pretty well. Messed up 3-1, 3-4 and 3-8, and missed my cup shots on 3-6 and 3-8. I thought I had the shots for course 4 memorized, but should have checked my notes on 4-2 and 4-5, did check my notes on hole 4-7 and completely screwed up 4-4 (to the point that I hit fast forward on the emulator at one point).

Well, managed to get a couple complete Any% runs in and my sum of bests segments is now at 50:14. Still haven't put together a good course 8 though, so I think with practice I'll be sub-50 with a good complete run. I've been streaming at twitch.tv/KCMcG if you want to check out what I've done. And I'm still on my crappy computer with an emulator, so sorry for any dropped frames. I'll probably be picking up a capture card in the next couple weeks so I can start recording on the real system.

Anyone else doing any full runs? As far as I could gather from searching around, the best Any% time was on SpeedRunsLive by Nocturne_ at 50:30.
Hey Opus, I was just listening to your stream from last night. The 2-5 strat is N, full right curve, 3/4 - 3/4+1 power and then fire the tire right as you're about to hit the water.

Trying to get on to actually comment while you're running more often, but it can be hard since I only have computers in my living room and have to share the space with my wife (who was watching something at the time). I really just need to dig out my headphones next time.

Hey, I have done speedruns of this game. I play on NTSC SNES; I don't know how VC or Emu compare. I started timing at pressing A while hovering over course 1, and ended timing when the final hit connected with Dedede. My any% time was 37:18. The run was OK; A good run would probably be at least 45s faster. Though I tried to save this run forever, Twitch lost the recording and my own personal recording has long since been recorded over. Neskamikaze has seen the run and can at least confirm it exists. This is a pretty rough description of my route, which is sufficient enough for me to remember what to do:
http://pastebin.com/9cx9SqxV -- Let me know if you have any better strats than these.

Hole in ones are slow. In general, the fastest way of completing a hole is to whiff the first shot, then make a hole-in-one on the 2nd shot. If that is difficult/risky, or if the hole is at the bottom of a hill, the 2nd best option is probably to slightly overshoot the hole and clip the back of it in order to stop quickly. If you have a powerup that stops quickly, like the rock or the needles, using it to stop your first shot is usually a pretty good idea. The only time you should get a hole in one is on the last hole of the course, as it is faster to reset than to watch the whole song and dance that occurs afterward. As such the optimal score for each course is 15, however on two courses, courses 1 and 6, I aim for a 16, as the hole in one on course 1 is dumb and the hole in two on 6-3 is crap too. Some holes can utilize both shots to save time over just wasting a shot and following the hole-in-one strategy.

Splits. I split upon selecting the file again as I needed some time to get from resetting my console over to the split on my keyboard.

Course 1: 3:50
Course 2: 7:50
Course 3: 12:41
Course 4: 17:02
Course 5: 22:13
Course 6: 27:01
Course 7: 31:50
Course 8: 36:37
Dedede: 37:18

The first two courses went really well, with no missed shots. I missed one shot on course 3, and I didn't get the 3-8 hole-in-one, but that one is excusable enough. Course 4, I can't remember, course 8 was good, but courses 5, 6, and 7 had some various issues. I don't exactly remember anymore what all happened.

There was some talk about about categories. Any% should just be to beat Dedede. 100% should be all gold medals, finish by beating either Dedede (normal course is faster to beat). And a middle-ground category I think should be Extra Course, which gets at least a silver medal on all normal courses (optimal strats achieve this naturally), goes through the extra course, and then beats the King Dedede from the extra course. That wouldn't be much faster than 100%, actually with the longer Dedede it might not be much different in time at all, but I think it's kind of a shame that no category would beat the longer Dedede, even if Dedede is the dumbest boss fight ever.
@KCM Okay cool! Thanks for checking it out. Sorry I've been so busy. I've been working with two different bands at once and with classes on top of that it has been something Sad

@r0bd0g Hey! Thanks for chipping in. I'll be trying to get some more practice in soon and I'll be giving your strats a shot. Smiley I really appreciate the help.
@r0bd0g Thanks for sharing your strats and splits. Now we've got something to aim for.

Speaking of your strats, started using them, plus had a decent run with only a few mistakes. And the result was a new PB, 48:59. I still think my computer is slowing the game down compared to an SNES, so I'm going to try to pick up a capture card this week. Until then, here's the video:

So, finally looked at the FPS of my emulator and realized I was running a PAL ROM. Tried switching to the NTSC one and miraculously, my times on the first 2 courses fell by 45s each. So, if I convert my 48:59, I end up with a 40:50. Obviously it's not quite the same because the timing is a little harder at 60 FPS, but at least now I feel like I'm in the ballpark.

It wouldn't have made a difference for long since my capture card is coming either the end of this week or next week. Looking forward to posting some actually competitive times in the next couple weeks.

Hey so I just wanted to say I used softresets in my run b/c they're faster, I just wasn't thinking when I wrote that last post and said I needed time to get from resetting the console to the keyboard... Still it's a 2-hand input and then you're mashing for the next little bit to get back in the game.

A little later today I'll recap the mistakes from my run as I remember them.

I think emu might lag a lot less than console, b/c when I spun around on PAL emu it spun faster than my SNES, so you might want to try a similar test yourself, since you have the NTSC ROM.

Here's the highlight that doesn't work: http://www.twitch.tv/r0bd0g/c/4943304

So instead here's the play-by-play of my PB as best as I can remember it.

Course 1: 16
- No mistakes.

Course 2: 15
- 2-2 - I didn't get the best level of power on the first shot, so I had to do a backup strategy which is a couple seconds slower.

Course 3: 17
- 3-4 - My first shot was sent a little wild when I used the parasol right as I landed on the spinning platform. This put me farther from the hole than I would have liked to be, so then I lined up the shot to the hole incorrectly and just barely missed.
- 3-8 - This shot is super inconsistent. I did everything I could but it didn't want to go in the hole in this run and I can't really be blamed for it.

Course 4: 18
- 4-2 - I failed to steer into the hole on the 2nd shot, so essentially I whiffed that first shot for no reason.
- 4-8 - I completely bungled the first shot and had basically no hope of getting into the hole in one shot afterward. I could have tried something but it would have taken a while to line it up and I probably would have missed anyway, so I just cut my losses and took another 2 shots to reach the hole.

Course 5: 18
- 5-1 - You need to do a full power shot to reliably reach the hole on the 2nd shot. If you don't get full power you have to do a tricky boost on the slope to make it, and I didn't quite make it. I vasty underpowered the follow-up shot into the hole and still didn't make it up to the slope, lol, so this hole took 4 shots. Pretty shameful.
- 5-2 - As a result of the shenanigans in the previous hole, Kirby begins this hole by complaining to me about his HP. In an effort to avoid further complaint, I decided to get a hole in one on this hole. But, as I am used to making this shot from slightly farther ahead after whiffing the first shot, I overcompensated and missed the freeze guy. Now Kirby is REALLY pissed at me so I have to sit through a really long animation. I still made it in in 2 shots but it was pretty slow and Kirby begins 5-3 by complaining once again.
- 5-6 - The first shot of this hole is really tricky, so it was a shame that I slightly overpowered the 2nd shot, ruining what would have been a pretty good hole.

Course 6: 17
- 6-4 - Since doing this run, I found a really obvious improvement to this hole's strategy.
- 6-6 - Missed the chip into the hole and didn't react until I was pretty far back down the slope.

Course 7: 17
- 7-2 - I made the first shot, which is pretty tricky, and then somehow managed to miss from already being on the lip of the hole. I didn't even know it was possible to miss from that far away.
- 7-3 - I didn't realize until after this run that my strategy for this hole was busted. The bounce that Kirby will take when you bounce on water is determined while you're in the air above the water, but if you roll straight into it without even going into the air, instead Kirby will do the bounce that he would have taken the last time you were over water but didn't end up bouncing on it. What I just said might be complete bullshit, but there is a glitch that works approximately like that. So instead of quickly skidding across the water, Kirby does this big bounce. Had I known what to do I could have still made the shot work, but instead I fell into the water. I failed to get out of the water and into the hole in one shot. After this run, I changed up the strategy for 5-4 so that I would bounce twice on the water, enabling me to skid quickly across the water in this hole, as originally planned.

Course 8: 15
- No mistakes.

Dedede: Easiest final boss ever.

Good luck with your runs. I have a couple strats I want to time after watching that run... Nothing too major.
The triple!

Just wanted to say I was trying some things and found a couple .5s timesavers lol, I might try to improve more holes.
