some thing you could do at the "bonus game" at each end of stage.
the first time you do this bonus game, you deliberately go further to have a higher "best score".
you'll lose maybe 1 second, but now, you'll be easier below your best score.
you lose like 2 seconds each time you beat your high score.

I already tested this and you don't lose time. The "NEW RECORD" doesn't waste any time, so you're best off just trying to cut kirby's jump short without bouncing every time, without caring about the best score.
Question about that 1:09 run: why don't you try to avoid checkpoints, health and abilities more? By avoiding more throughout the run, you could save a decent amount of time.
Right, so I'm mostly a casual gamer (and I'm a newbie here anyways so I'm prolly doing this wrong ^^ ' ) but I have recently been casually speedrunning this game and, given that the new time I got today wasn't too too bad, I think I want to do it more seriously. I haven't done much in terms of research or formal practice on the game yet (I intend to maybe tomorrow though) so you should probably take what I have to say with a grain of salt. In terms of observations from experience:

-Game is a pretty interesting between skill and getting the physics in your favor

-Looping trick is annoying to pull off sometimes but it definitely is faster if Kirby follows through it

-Checkpoints, animations for getting a copy ability, as well as other things that make you lose control of Kirby stop the in-game timer as far as I know, but they also kill your ability to draw a loop so it's not always a good idea to touch them

-Most of the power-ups have some use throughout the run (Except maybe Needle, but apparently Kirbymastah found it useful so I'm assuming it was just for 4-2. Oh and Crash for obvious reasons.). Also, a comment on Freeze, I think it has a faster fall speed than normal (judging from time trials) but I can definitely tell it's very bad for upward movement. As such, it's very useful in 5-1 at the end but I don't bother with it in most other stages.

-King Dedede is annoying. Despite "Max Speeds" supposedly being good, you don't want those because you can't chain them unlike "Speed Ups." I don't really lose to him, but it's fully possible to die on him if you don't start with a lot of health (it's for this reason that I do 2-3 before 2-2: 2-3 often leaves you with low health). None of the other sub-games are too too bad though.

-Probably the most interesting thing I'm pondering over is the Drawcia fight. I'm probably wrong on this, but I think you can manipulate the fight depending on how often you die. Normally, assuming you never die, Drawcia Sorceress's pattern usually allows you to go through the first 3 cycles pretty quickly and the last two take a bit longer. However, the pattern changes up a bit if you suicide. Drawcia uses the Bounce move right off the bat instead of an immediate Elec Ball, but that's really about it. Drawcia Soul's pattern, however, changes a lot more noticably if you die on Sorceress. At the beginning of the fight, it takes her a while before she gives you the opportunity for you to dash attack her. Instead, she uses a lot more Para Matter (I get about 5 waves of it total instead of about 3 during deathless). However, the 2nd half of the fight goes by a lot faster, mainly because she doesn't really spam the Meteor Attack so much (she used it once in the PB time here, whereas she uses it at least twice, often thrice, when you're deathless). Still, I really don't know which is faster or if it's possible to manipulate Drawcia even further or if I'm just being silly, but it's prolly worth taking a look.

Oh right, before I forget, the time (which I guess is my PB) from today is 1:16 with a breakdown something like this (my memory of the individual level times is a bit sketchy :/ )

Level 1: 0:05
Level 2: 0:12
Level 3: 0:22
Level 4: 0:31
Level 5: 0:42
Level 6: 0:56
Level 7: 1:07
Final: 1:16

-4 deaths in total. The only ones that cost me a hefty amount of time were two in 7-1 (one after the checkpoint in screen 1 and a bs accidental death at the start of screen 2) which cost about 25-30 seconds in total. The other two were suicides (7-2 after the mid-boss and the Drawcia Sorceress fight) which cost fairly negligible amounts of time (maybe about 5 seconds total)

-Most of the time loss definitely came from mediocre looping throughout and taking too much damage and having to play it safe (i.e. 5-3, 6-1, 6-3, and 7-3)

I have a video of my 1:09 in-game time run here:

So I recommend watching that. It's not a very good run honestly, and I hope to improve it. Someone PM'd me on twitch and claimed to have a 1:04 or 1:05 as well, saying it's a bad run? There isn't any video proof, so I can't say much more about that nor do I know the person.

Most of what you said is known and is useful. Checkpoints don't kill the loop speed (though if you're in the middle of drawing one, it'll break it). I honestly don't know how good freeze is in terms of speed. Needle is also very fast; try using it and creating a short ramp, and kirby will go flying. Needle Kirby will also go flying up a vertical path if you draw one, so it's actually one of the fastest abilities in the game Tongue

Drawcia is something I haven't researched enough, and I hope to do some testing eventually. I can't comment on it.

Anyways, it's great to see someone else interested in running this! I plan on offering it for AGDQ2015 so if it gets accepted, expect me to stream research and attempts of this and maybe submit to SDA Wink Good luck with the runs!
