DO THE MEATEO

Hi everyone!

We are running a FF6 tournament starting on November 1st - it will be races up to Kefka at Narshe. We already have 77 (!) signups for this in the 2 weeks of advertising so far which has somehow surpassed the previous FF4 Paladin% tournament we had earlier this year. Wow! This time we will have qualifying groups in which 32 will qualify overall for the knockout stage (straight knockout), and semi/grand finals will be hosted again on RPGLB on Jan 16th (time TBA).

Signups for the tournament are at https://goo.gl/xMJ9sW and close on the 25th October.
Rules for the tournament can be found at https://goo.gl/ueA92N

A K@N tutorial made by TheLCC can be found below:
http://www.twitch.tv/thelcc/v/17259543
http://www.twitch.tv/thelcc/v/17259732

Any questions feel free to post them here and we can get back to you, alternatively you can ask any of the Admin team (the_roth, elmagus, catastrophic4, neerrm and puwexil). Hope to see you there!

Edit 1: Alrighty, the group stages are finished and the elimination stages are upon us!

The bracket can be found at https://goo.gl/x2HUPv

Each round will take around a week and a half to play, with the semi finals and grand final being played on the 16th January (time TBA). Good luck to all the players, and may Kefka be not very harsh to you.
Thread title:
I have a question.  The Earthbound Super Series tournament seeded round robin brackets by percieved skill levels. Will Kefka @ Narshe be set up similarly? Or will these round robin matches be randomly generated brackets?
DO THE MEATEO
Howdy, yes it will, so There are people of 3 different skill levels (seasoned runners, people who have completed a few runs and newbies to FF6) seeded/spread out in different groups. We will keep in mind people who have streamed before and who haven't, as to keep the groups as balanced as possible as there will be people who practice and will learn the game much faster.
Well, it only took me 18 tries but I finally managed to get a completed run. I suddenly feel a bit more confident that someone who has never speedrun a day in his life (me) can actually pull this off again. Bring on November!

Edit to add:  Will there be a rule in place that enforces a train suplex, or can we ditch the extra ten seconds for that?
I must simply laugh.
train suplex is not mandatory but you could set such an arrangement before your match with your opponent : ) im sure a lot of people wanna do that
Let me start by saying, I'm new to speed running in general, I've practiced a few games but never really streamed. I know far less about the finer details than I should. So if I'm wrong, definitely let me know.

I've noticed that some emulators will be allowed. On the official SNES cart, and likely even worse on the VC version, when you reset the game it takes several seconds longer to come back to the "Final Fantasy III" screen than it would on an emulator. I noticed this when watching LCC's WR Sketch% run. He performs numerous resets which take much less time to get back in game than I could possibly achieve on my own cart. I can only assume he's using an emulator.

In order to manipulate the river section and possibly other sections, a reset is required.

Doesn't that seem a little unbalanced? I know not everybody has the same resources available, but has anybody considered how the different platforms will affect your time?

Is there one platform in particular that has been determined to be the fastest? I venture to guess it's the emulator. I'm aware the load times on the PS version do not offset the fact that you have a run button, making it the slowest version as far as I know.

I guess what I'm getting at, is even though I have the official SNES cart, is it going to be more practical to use an emulator, or a different version?

Since I don't have the inherent skill or experience, I want to give myself the best chance possible to achieve a nice time.

Thanks for running this!

i will conduct research on this
I must simply laugh.
from my testing i got the following results (with the help of catastrophic4):

Hit Reset - Game loaded:
Snes9x 1.53 : 11.63
Console:        12.13
WiiVC:            15.3

I have a cart that was used a lot in the past years so that might affect it aswell, but what this shows is:

you will lose minimal time on console (2 resets = 1s, easily made up by the slightly higher framerate on console)

however the WiiVC version seems to load 3s longer, so i would defenitley recommend not using VC if you can avoid that.

I would be curious what you do to reset that you think you lose seconds, because i dont really have that happening to me.

If more people want to conduct research, that is more than welcome.

PS: LCC played on Console i think

I just tested mine with xsplit. I got 13.11, 12.88, 13.04 in three attempts, averaging to 13.01 - this is with me mashing A to select the (presumably) most recent save, no directional inputs.

When I timed LCC's reset prior to the river, he actually resets twice, I only timed the second one, but I came up with 11.05 average over three timing attempts. I'm sure there's a certain margin of error, but that's two full seconds per reset difference from my cart to his run. I'm really not entirely sure how to interpret that. I didn't test with emulator, I'll take your word for it though.

And I actually thought the emulator ran more smoothly than the console, but you seem to know what you're talking about.

The fact that I'm almost a full second behind your cart test makes me think there might be some flaw with my cart or something. That would be really sad news, I didn't want to have to try and get another cart since I can't tell if I'm getting a 1.0 or a 1.1, and I would have no clue if the other cart would boot any faster.

I guess I'll just have to accept it.

EDIT: It occurs to me, LCC's reset loaded him into the Returner's Hideout, whereas mine loaded me into the world map. It's possible it just takes longer for the world map to load. I'm going to make a save at the Returner's Hideout to do a more accurate comparison. It's also possible that this thread isn't the best place to discuss this, if so I apologize. Seemed to be relevant.
I must simply laugh.
the area you load into affects the load time apparantly. i just double checked, it takes me longer to load into the veldt as compared to the first save point of the game for some reason. i did all my tests at the same savespot though, so the times are still accurate for what they are

See, I'm one of those people who think "this is a speedrun, just kill the train and be done." (I also tend to vote kill the animals in Super Metroid, but I digress....)

Got a run down to 1:38:09 today, so more progress. Guess I should start reading up on step manipulation at some point soon. Would also love to find a way to avoid pincer attacks, had three of the things in this run pre-Smoke Bombs else I might have gone to 1:37.
There's only one day left to register! We have an amazing 96 people signed up so far!
Hello! Question about registration forms:
I initially signed up for the tournament a while back (forget exactly when), when I hadn't completed a run. Since then, I've learned the route and done several runs. Is there anything I should do in regard to updating the information on the tournament signup form?
Roth is going to be getting in contact with everyone to confirm their entry into the tournament (in the event that someone has changed their mind or has registered and disappeared). When he does that, you can give him an update on your PB. Probably the best way to do it Smiley
Groovy. Thanks Neerrm!
Very Thanks..!!
Good luck to everyone in the tournament! It's going to be a good one!

DO THE MEATEO
Entries are now closed. Wow, 98 entrants!

I will be contacting everybody today via how you wanted to be contacted in in the signup form (mostly Skype), so please respond ASAP when you get my message. You need to confirm your entry to me directly or I may miss putting your name down when forming groups later this week. If you do not hear from me by Wednesday can you please PM me directly through twitch (the_roth) ASAP. Thanks.

There will be some sort of opening ceremony/stream/race this Saturday afternoon 31 Oct (time TBA, likely around 5pm EST) to kick off the tournament, where all the rules and groups will be released, so stay tuned for that too!

Edit 1 (26 Oct): Everyone has been contacted now and I have 53 responses out of 100. Please reply ASAP, thanks!

Edit 2 (27 Oct): For some reason I can't connect to Skype. Have contacted them for help but in the meantime the Skype practice group won't be organised until that happens. If you need to contact me, please do so via Twitch, thanks.
Just sent you a PM ow Twitch the_roth, because I didn't receive your confirmation message on Skype / Twitter.
Just to let you know in case you look at this thread!

Thanks, I PMed you back Smiley

I'm having Skype issues for the time being. As of 2 days ago I can't log into my account. Catastrophic4 will be handling signup verification for the 40 or so runners that I haven't heard from since 2 days ago. To make things easier, can you please PM him directly if you haven't heard back from myself or him. Thanks
For those who have not confirmed or confirmed anytime after Sunday: Be on the lookout for a Skype message (or Twitch PM or email, as you initially indicated as your preferred method). The two questions we need answered are 1. Are you participating, and 2. If so, do you want to be a part of the big skype group for information sharing and practice-race set up?

For transparency purposes, I will list below the people who we don't yet show as confirmed/pulled-out, this way everyone knows what we know.

Hi Doicm, sorry about that, I either forgot to add you or my Skype went down before seeing your response. Are you entering/like to be part of the large Skype group?

Cayoche - Do you mean your Twitch username is Caznode?

Edit:There are roughly 30 people who haven't responded yet. I have also PMed everyone on Twitch who hasn't confirmed their entry as of Monday when I lost Skype access. This may be in your Junk folder so please check there too and reply ASAP. Thanks, and I will know more about Skype in the next 24 hours or so. Sorry for the communication messup guys.
No, my username twitch is Cayoche, and my twitch is http://www.twitch.tv/cayoche
