Definitely. I plan to include commentary as a standard for any speedrun I produce at this point. This JSRF speedrun has been through an extensive production history that I would love to share with the viewers. Plus, the experience is much more immersing compared to scrolling through the comments then fast-forwarding to the appropriate part. The commentary would cover:

1) Details (such as the flaws) of the destroyed 2:49:xx version.
2) Details about where Fractal Fusion's knowledge helped out big time, probably cutting over 20 minutes of inferior route-planning.
3) Share my aggravation (probably in the form of F-bombs) of unskippable cutscenes and the only way to reattempt a segment is to do a manual reset of the console (no menu "load" option or any way back to the title screen, WTF?)
4) Share my appreciation for the Jet Set Radio franchise, why I choose JSRF (Xbox, 2002) over JGR (Dreamcast, 1999) to speedrun, mention my fanboy wishes for an eventual sequel, etc.

It'll be pretty bad-ass!

No segment 1 complete. I was being a little too optimistic, as usual. I made that assumption based on the fact I could play via HDMI, while abusing my HDTV's composite output, assuming it could convert digital to analog like that ... *bsst* Wrong. So I'm stuck playing and recording in shitty standard definition. I don't have a tower to install the potential problem-solving component-input capture card, I only have a gaming notebook. >_>; So, I'm getting over my proffered standard of playing the game in HD at least, and will attempt recording tomorrow.

On a different note, I watched segment 5 from the 2:49:xx (May 2007) version. I'm so relieved the disc corrupted/I never submitted. There are some unpolished parts that would've just bothered the fuck out of me if I had submitted this version (Such as boosting while grinding on a rail, as if that actually makes me go faster when in reality, it's just wasting cans). Sad
Planning to upload to your YouTube page as you go?
I don't know how feasible this is, but I found that most battle scenes do not trigger until the Rokkaku guys stop talking. Changing characters or saving at a save point also has some Rokkaku speech. It could possibly be abused to skip battle; however, I was unable to skip anything other than the beginning of 99th St on the highway (which is so easy to skip that we don't notice anyway).

Anyway, t r i - h e x, you have much more playing skill than I will ever have, so I wish you good luck once again.

You said before that your final time was 2:42:xx, not 2:49:xx.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Praticed today, sucked. Got 0:33:xx at the end of practicing segment 1. Now that I know FractalFusion is here again (Great to see you still supporting BTW!), here's a detailed rundown of what I'm doing in segment 1. New, improved stuff is in pink. Let me know if there's something you don't see fully optimized:

Garage:

- gum tut
- end with 30 cans

Garage:

- turn right, hop off the rail at the decline part, towards the Dogenzaka exit.

Dogenzaka

- grind the first rail, shuffle towards the second rail, (Noteworthy: I'm NOT hoping off the second rail) grind second rail.
- shuffle-click* towards the right and boost downward towards free soul (21).

- hop on rail, jump towards middle rail, jump off middle rail to gather cans.
- boost towards rail leading to the left.
- shuffle after rail towards the long rail with all the people around
* Thanks to shitty X360 emulation, all the people around cause the game to slow down dramatically. This wasn't a problem when I was on Xbox 1.
- after grinding rail, and at max cans, boost towards free soul to the right (22).
- shuffle after boost, fall, spray L and L tags. **
- grind downhill rail, gather cans.
- tag the first curve (S, M, M, etc.)
- turn around, hop on the curve rail, grab the last blue can, and boost towards the next curve
- spray the second curve (S, XL, S, S) having zero cans remaining
- grab the five cans before the M tag
- spray the M tag
- grind the third curve rail
- hop on the next rail, do 1 X-button-trick, hold back to decrease speed, and spray the L-tag (going any faster than slowest possible grind speed will result in missing 1 part of the L-tag)
- boost off the rail, grabbing the first blue can and 1 yellow can afterward
- shuffle-click to the left, and boost up the curve, grabbing 15 cans (should have ~22-23 cans at this point)

- spray M and L-size tags
- "ZOMFG! Beat's spreading rumors!" cutscene
- grab the two blue cans from that tricky angel
- Beat 1
- Grab tape
- Beat 2
- Beat 3
- Boost out of music store, shuffle upon landing until I grind the left side of the halfpipe
- jump off of rail before the wall, should be at about 75% speed, when landing hop to sustain 60%+ speed, doing an extended jump*** directly onto the left side halfpipe to grind

- jump off halfpipe, over the stairs, doing 3 air tricks, triggering one of the Dogenzaka Tape Souls that spawns on the way to Shibuya.
- Beat 4

Beat Race

- Boost right away towards the Love Avenue rail
- shuffle after rail onto the second rail
- shuffle after rail onto the third rail
- boost after third rail towards the right where the 22nd soul was
- DON'T jump, instead fall over the billboard and shuffle towards the rail after the billboards
- DON'T jump off that one either, falling down below directly onto the rail before the first curve (falling has a near 100% speed after grinding anything, instead of jumping off, which is ~75% typically)

- grind rail, boosting in the middle of the rail, grabbing cans, maxing out cans, then shuffle-click to the left and skate down the first curve slope
- boost towards the second curve slope
- shuffle-click to the right and skate down the second curve slope
- skate to the roof right before the third curve, and boost to the other roof, followed by directly on  to  rail before the fourth curve
- boost after the rail for 6 cans
- shuffle-click to the left and boost up the slope for 15 cans, shuffle, stop early to lose speed
- do a standard jump and grab the two blue cans (going even moderately fast results in  doing a 50% speed air trick, which is always slow)
- skate down the mini-slope right before "Beat 1", shuffling to the rail
- boost from platform 1 to 2
- boost again from platform 3 out of the music store, shuffle to halfpipe rail, etc. (repeat what I did earlier)

Target time: 1:29:xx or better

Cop fight

- Should have ~13 cans at this point.
- Boost towards the group of cops by the Long Avenue rail, holding R, avoiding the useless "lock-on" camera mode, but resetting the camera as needed.
- Turn around and tag the remaining 6 cops that should be after me at that point
- End the fight with max cans.

Dogenzaka

- Long Avenue grind, jump off rail, grind rail, jump grab "3 air trick soul" (23), grind jump, 2 more tricks = all tape souls unlocked
- Go to Shibuya

Shibuya remains unchanged. I'm grabbing it's tape and triggering the "10x grind trick" soul when I talk to Poison Jam for the 3rd time.

Chuo St. remains mostly unchanged. I'm using cans better and boosting twice during the tank fight rather than zero times as I originally did. After the Poison race, boost my ass off to Rokkaku-Dai to save.

Target time: 0:31:xx.

Opinions?

* Shuffle-click - click the left analog stick, plus a direction, to quickly make a sharp turn in that direction (Technically, doing a "as short as possible" shuffle). It's faster than make the narrowest turn possible otherwise.
** I've gotten far better at spraying while walking away from the tags. Jumping towards the end of walking away will negate the camera's terrible habit of forcing the character to face the graffiti.
*** Extended Jump - holding A the entire duration of a jump, causing a higher jump. I will usually abuse it to get to the top of a halfpipe, being minimalistic in attempts to get into the collision detection of the rail to avoid skating upward in a halfpipe, which loses speed.

Yeah. Probably only segments 1 and 2 (Being 6 parts total, since I should be at almost an hour of footage at that point).  I want to leave the rest for the published page. I want everyone to have a reason to be excited about it rather than have everything spoiled. Plus, I'd probably be too lazy to Anri-chan everything.

Could you elaborate more on you mean by "battle scenes"? You mean, like, when facing Hayashi and company in the early segments? Or the bosses (such as flamethrower chick/claw guy) in later segments? The second sentence confuses me entirely.

Huh? You never told me you could skip the beginning of 99th street. Are you saying it's possible to skip Professor K's intro on 99? Or were you referring to something else?

Thank you again. Trust me, without you, this speedrun wouldn't have been half as a good as it will be. Plus, with a companion (for once), it helps big time in the determination department. As for the time, you're right. I was quoting that with a guess. I never bothered to memorize the time since I'm not satisfied with that version of the speedrun.
When Hayashi and company are talking, usually no Rokkaku battle can be triggered (there is an exception though), even if you are in the battle trigger zone, until the talking is done. The one that comes to mind is in Hikage St. and trying to skip the first drone; however, the speech is too short to tag everything in the north section and leave before it is done. Other ones I considered were Chuo St. (Rokkaku tank) and Rokkaku-dai Heights. I haven't experimented much.

Rokkaku police talking can also be triggered by changing characters on a save point.

By the 99th St. thing, I meant that, on the first visit, if you wait long enough, you get an unnecessary battle.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Did some testing. Here are the notes:

  • Saving after the introductory cutscene (after Gum's tutorial), then reloading, selecting character, and entering Dogenzaka results in skipping the "introductory Dogenzaka" cutscene. Saving about 30 seconds.

I wanted to test if this 30 seconds is worth starting with no cans. I got a save time of 0:10:xx when I went through Dogenzaka as fast as possible to the save point near where Beat wants to race you. However, I got a time of 0:07:xx when I did the same thing from the beginning of the game with no reload segment BS. So, I'm a little confused on how the timer works. It doesn't count cutscenes? .. Or I might need to try that test again.

  • Even if you spray the save point in Chuo St., it dissapears during the tank fight. Meaning no way to skip it.

Aggh. Besides trying those things out, recording blew today. I messed up a lot in the first 30 seconds after the introductory cutscene a lot: getting hit by cars (There seems to be, like, thrice the amount of vehicles in Dogenzaka thanks to the emulation), missing a shuffle, etc. It was really aggravating.

If this is how different the game is under X360 emulation, I don't know what to say.  Lips Sealed

True. However, I was referring to whether it can be skipped without activating the fight. I was trying to figure out if it is possible to spray the few tags in the battle activation zone (these are the tags on top of the buildings near the ramps and stairs) while the initial speech is running. The speech starts when you first arrive, and restarts whenever you arrive here or use the save point unless you heard the whole speech already (to test this, enter and exit Chuo St. repeatedly). It doesn't seem possible to tag the above tags in time, though, and even so, you have to pass through the area again (after the Poison Jam race).
Hope this works out.

How coincidental that someone bump this thread after 6 months when I was planning to do so sometime next week?

It will. Sometime later this year I plan dive head-first into getting this whole thing out, fully optimized, and sexy as hell. I owe it to FractalFusion (As well as all those who supported way back in May 2007 when this thing started) as he has worked just as hard as I have with collaborating on the extensive routing such a speedrun requires.

The reason I was going to bump this next week rather than wait until I'm actually ready to start again is because, if you haven't read the recent posts in the Yoshi's Island thread, I got a new 160 GB HDD DVD Recorder, and want to treat everyone with some tease footage of my JSRF speedrun (unoptimized Summer 2007 attempt), probably segment 4 or something off of disc 2, to make up for the lack of anything to show everyone after a year and half of nothing.
Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and what better way to introduce myself here than to plan/submit a speed run. This will be the second game that I have actually gone for a speed run on. The first one I did was a 100% segmented run for Donkey Kong 64 however I found it incredibly difficult to beat the NTSC time that still stands on this website (I live in Australia so I'm pretty much forced to use PAL). Anyway as the title of this topic suggests this is a run for Jet Set Radio Future. I have noticed there has been a lot of failed projects in the past to actually get a run for this game and being an avid fan I thought I could give it a go. I do already have a run all ready to be submitted to the site and to be verified. It's a single-segment min% run i.e. finishing the story with the minimum requirements which is really just a pitiful 40 Graffiti Souls (and you start off with 20 of them). The system that I used to play it on was an original PAL Xbox with a first-party controller and the copy of the game I used is the special one that got bundled with Sega GT 2002. Because of the inability to skip cut scenes in the game the in-game timer was stopped at about 3:14 however I have requested that it will be manually timed to compensate for the lack of skipping cut scenes and a suspicion that I have that the in-game timer is inaccurate (the video is shorter than the time that is displayed at the end :S). If any more details about this run that I have done need to be known please ask, although I'm pretty sure I've covered most of, if not all of it :).
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
This is the one of the runs I would most like to see out of all games.

Do all the submitting stuff with Mike, he'll tell you everything you need to know. Have you paid attention to all the work tri-hex and Fractal Fusion previously did? If you didn't incorporate all that, your run probably won't make it past verification. This is a really tough game to plan and run, but verifiers will be able to tell if you did a good job. Good luck!
Yeah I've been in contact with Mike hassling him for about 3 weeks now LOL. I did notice the attention they paid but really the game itself is quite linear. There are some spots where you can choose what you do first but there's only one true way to do it the quickest. For example, in Chapter 2 you have the chance to do Chuo street, Rokakku Dai or 99th street first but you should do them in the order that I have listed them. Things like that and how you spray graffiti in certain areas (again it's quite linear but for places like Shibuya Terminal and 99th Street they were planned), where I go to beat the Noise Tanks, what 20 Graffiti Souls I get and that's about it. What actually did need a lot of planning was my spray can distribution i.e. where I pick them up, how many I use on boost dashes etc. Anyway I would like to get the green light to get this up soon. If not I might go for another go to see if I can better it again.
I'd say have another go at it, but upload the one you already have to youtube. That way you could get some pre-verification in a way.

I'd love to see the run myself, GL on getting it submitted and stuff Cheesy
My feelings on The Demon Rush
I don't think you guys have been checking the verification topic very carefully (hint: look under September 27th).
Hey guys. Having a bit of an issue with editing the video into segments so I can upload it to you tube. I'm using Premiere Pro CS4 and for some reason the audio and video become out of sync when put into the program. Playing the video in any media player works fine but if I try to play it in PPro or render it and then play it in something like VLC it remains out of of sync. Could anyone help me out? I know it's a bit off topic but it is for the benefit of this speed run so if anyone could help that would be great.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
The Claw: I'm probably going to use the in-game timer unless if it's inconsistent (i.e. you always get the same time real-time, but it's different in-game).
DS Dictator
I have a huge feeling that using Windows Movie maker = WMV file = huge rejection worthy according to some of the quotes from the past threads.
I'm guessing it's recorded from a capture card right?
Mike: Hmmm well after that it was suggested that I should go for another run I did and I got a 3:12 time. The video itself however is about 10 minutes shorter than that though. So I don't know what that means here. I would like it manually timed because of the bloody cut scenes. There's at least 30 minutes of cut scenes that can't be skipped. With this quality test/verification, am I required to upload the whole run or just a segment of it?

Greenalink: It's OK now. I got Vegas last night so I'll use that. And it was recorded from a TV Card I have installed on my computer so I can record directly to my hard disk.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Just a segment or short clip is fine.

Go to the tech support board and read this thread. Make a new thread for your JSRF run. Consider using anri-chan because if you don't know what you're doing with encoding, Nate could reject your video.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Okay the claw, but when I manually time runs, I just time from start point to end point, the cutscenes will still be counted. However, that doesn't really make much of a difference if you can't skip them anyway. Sad
Try to use the information in the other JSRF topic. There are a few great timesavers.
