I recently downloaded this speed run, and I'm appalled at the quality. It's full of mistakes and it looks as though it wasn't planed out very well. The person who made it didn't take any of the major shortcuts, and even backtracked an entire area in part 4. The point is that I think it's easily beatable, and I think I might give it a shot.

I'm new to speed running so I'm unsure of the convention of registering/submitting speed runs, or whatever it is I have to do. I plan to do a single segment run, and I intend to beat the current segmented run time by 20-30mins (which I hope gets it booted off the site).

give me your eyes!!!
Aww, I feel sorry for Mkt Cry Roll Eyes

If you have a decent run then submitting it will be perfectly fine (contact Radix with all the details when it's finished), and it will replace the one here.

I thought about doing this but with 100%, but it'll be nice to see someone else do it too.

Good luck!
I'd like to see this, but you know since it is a real time active world, it maybe harder than you think, or maybe not. :-/ (trying to defend you mkt  ;)) either way it would be great if you could improve this run  Grin I would definitley watch it.
KING OF THE DOVES
Hey come on, Mkt2015 is a nice enough guy, no need to sound so spiteful ("which I hope gets it booted off the site").

That said, I'd hope you actually do follow through, any competition should result in the truely fastest time. Doing it single-segmented though? You must be a tiny god at the game then, I must have died approximatly one billion times in the game. The second and third zoomer levels had me quite frustrated. Or, are you going to have some deaths in your run?

Good luck!

Um...yeah...beating it by a half hour. I honestly doubt you could improve it by 5 minutes.

If you can actually find shortcuts, by my guest. I had to backtrack the area.

That's like saying a person can beat Warrior Within by 30 minutes by getting hit less. And to do it single-segment. You are full of shit.

Oh, and thanks Frig1d.

I may be the only one of SDA that actually runs a game as I go...except for Soul Reaver. When it came to doing Jak and Daxter I did do a lot of planning for each segment. However, I didn't know what power cells I would have to get later on. If this a horrible way to plan a speedrun, then sue me. I got used to this way because of Max Payne and because that game is freakin' hard.

As far as I know there are no major shortcuts I could've taken. I believe that every power cell I got was in an order that was the fastest. My only major regret was going through the Precursor Basin and falling and going back and doing it again which cost me about 20 seconds or so.
I did watch the run, but i only tried the game once over at a friends house. I just have to say that even if mr jake the snake does indeed beat the run by half hour, i won't download it, for him acting like an arrogant asshole. Pff, maybe he's just one of those trolls or liers that pass by once in a while.
Speed is the key.

Only time will tell.
Sorry Mkt2015, now that I read over my post, it sounds really hurtful towards you. And I'm sorry to everyone for sounding like a prick. It was mainly the backtrack in Boggy Swamp that upset me about the run, but I did pick up a few techniques from you, particularly using the crouch jump in the Lost Precursor City to reach some of those higher platforms.

Some of the major shortcuts that would have improved your runs by a several minutes are:
  • Not talking to the warrior in rock village. It takes 3 minutes of talking before you actually receive the power cell from him. Alternatives are getting the power cell from an oracle, or going to the spider cave.
  • Not using the Flut Flut to get the power cell on Snowy Mountain. With the right technique, it is possible to jump spin from near the fort area, and get to the power cell, skipping the Flut Flut segment.
  • The most major shortcut in the game - You don't have to free the Yellow Sage by going through the obstacles of the precursor launchers. It is quite possible to do a roll jump from the Blue Sage's floating platform, then free the Yellow Sage right away.
I am totally serious about attempting a single segment. I'll aim for no deaths, but accidents do happen.

Hmmm...interesting shortcuts. I'm not too sure about the Flut-Flut thing in Snowy Mountain but the others sound good.

Edit: I looked back at the run and saw that you have to talk to the Warrior for him to make the bridge. So, unless you can find a way to cross without needing a bridge...you have to do it.

However, SS sounds ridiculous. I know this game kind of gives a gamer unlimited lives...but I wouldn't expect less than 10 deaths. Any amount of deaths look bad in a speedrun...and unless you've played this game 10x more than I ever did, I'd think it would be much easier to just improve what you say could be improved and did it in roughly the same amount of segments I did. I mean, I made it that many for a reason. Tongue

Also, considering that the game doesn't keep track of time, you could always just redo certain segments such as Snowy Mountain or the 2nd part of Rock village. As long as it has the same amount of precursor orbs as the segments before it, Radix should accept it.

Erm.  Didn't Warrior Within teach you the hazards of saying stuff like this?

Uh, you can't just replace a couple of segments of a multi-segment run on a game like this.  It's not like you're tracking individual level times.  The whole idea is that the run was done consecutively.  There are too many things that have to match.  Including, just off the top of my head, abilities, bullet counts, and the time of day.

That you would make a claim like this concerns me a little.  You didn't just go back and replace segments in your multi-segment run without redoing the run from that point, did you?

The difference is that I just wanted to get a run of warrior within up and not only did I not look for shortcuts...I wouldn't even know what to look for. There are only a few moves Jak can do...so it wasn't hard to figure out what worked the best and what was fastest, unlike all of the moves in warrior within. His claim of thinking he could beat it by 30 mins is impossible. Unless there is some shortcut that no one has found yet it is impossible. I also did warrior within because of the tried and true statement "Don't ask someone else to do it...do it yourself." Or did you want me to email you all the time and demand you do the run?:P

I don't know what you mean by abilities...unless your thinking about shooting red eco or something. Bullet counts? Have you even played Jak and Daxter? Actually, I hadn't thought of time at the very beginning again. For Jak II it doesn't matter cause time of day is pretty random.

I haven't done that no.

My bad on bullet counts; for some reason I thought we were talking about Jak 2. Smiley  I'm still not fond of the idea of just replacing segments, even if they do match up perfectly.
I've done the speed run. It's not perfect, but it's single segment, and faster than the current one. I only died 5 times, but sadly, 2 of those times were fighting the final boss, costing about 5mins. There's room for improvement, so I might try it again in a few months, but I'm sick of it for now.

I don't really have any good software to rip the dvd to divx or anything, so I've made a torrent, and I'm hoping someone would be able to download it, and help me out. (if that link doesn't work, go here).

My up-stream's not particularly fast, so I'll leave my computer on for a few days.

Can we get a time here?  You didn't mention a time at all.
DMC3,ZOE2 and Xenosaga 2.  Am I crazy?
I can`t download it because I need to sign in to something...

Sorry. Using the FAQ for how runs are timed, my time is about 1:57:40.

My bad. Try going here to download the torrent.
Forget about the torrent. I've found a program that's fully functional for 5 trials, so I think I'll be right.

I swear that I will never use 5 minutes to describe what an improvement would add up to for a speedrun. If 1:57:40 is the real time...how in the hell?
I've decided that I'm not going to submit this run. I've since found some quicker ways to do things so I'll do it again in a few weeks.

If you wanted to see it, then you can download it from here:

That was amazing... and you are going to do it FASTER!?
How much do you plan on improving the time?

I'm a little surprised that I didn't know you only had to open up the scout flies with eco and not actually walk over them. That, and I suck at finding shortcuts. I've only watched the first half and a little bit near the end...but very good job. I can see that you have played the game a lot more than me.

It would be awesome if you could do the whole thing without dying and single-segment...but that might be a bit too much to ask for.

Ill try again in a few weeks. but right now im in Japan. I reckon I could do it without dying.

Could someone with the single segment run please upload it again?  The megaupload link is dead.

Yes, I know this topic is very old, but I just beat the game today.
