Speedrun done in 3 segments and uploaded at filefront - http://hosted.filefront.com/Pendrokar/2203404
Total time(counting from menu appear and after magic says "The bitch is dead") - 7:32

Ewil has a bounty on this game so that is why I considered running this game.
Quote:
Game: Jagged Alliance 2

Goal: any% multi-segmented

Prize: $50

Offer by: Ewil

The run has to be completed within 2-3 hours max and cca 50 segments top, otherwise it would be boring. It can probably be done under one hour if you obsolete the Meduna town with lot of segments. I was thinking of doing this run on my own, but I don't have much free time. Best strategy would probably be to hire some good mercs at Omerta, travel across the whole island, visit Orta to get the rocket rifles and avoid all fighting in Meduna except the last sector. Hard to say whether the frontal attack or secret underground path would be faster/safer.

Difficulty Settings:
Expert; Save Anytime(Due to Meduna Palace); Normal gun count; sci-fi setting!

Q: 10 Min. How?
A:1) Take Magic(Because HE IS COOL, but actually because he is the fastest and has a great aim) and Grunty(just because he's got the coffee I mean water)
2) run to the right sector from the start
3) Take 2 water canteens from Grunty and dismiss him!
route(green spots are save spots)-http://img140.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=44692_ja2_2008-03-19_18-10-30-86_122_775lo.jpg
First Segment Done(told why later) Save
4) Go to Cambria for two Laws(There are either none, one or two of them depending on my route or enemies that I meet up on my way)
5) Go to Estoni buy from Jake the wire scissors and kill him, take the CLAW shotgun!
Save! Second Segment Done!
6)Sleep!
7)Go to Meduna Airport(cut wires) and then straight to Queens Palace.(There are land mines through that route but I will luckily KNOW where they are)
8)Go near the fortified wall. Save!(Third Done)(Due to randomness of the cracked LAW it may not shoot sometimes) Shoot with the LAW at it(Other thing that can destroy it is Mortar, but it would be more inaccurate) and momently after the rocket is fired move or somehow interrupt otherwise the enemy is alarmed and the queen escapes to the bunker(Though I can catch her it is more harder to take her down!)
9) Head to inner walls! Shoot with the second LAW at the light palace wall(with the interupt)
10) Head inside kill the queen with the CLAW shotgun. The End!

Now comes the problem! I cannot record Jagged Alliance 2 neither with fraps or any other freeware screencapture program! Because there is some problem with JA2 that I record at 5 FPS at full screen 6-7 at half! I had recorded Medieval: Total War any the recording was fine. I need to get another PC on which to run it!
Thread title:
Wow, I would never say such route might be succesful. I guess I was counting with some resistance in Daedranna's mansion, but I still wonder how you manage that.

Yeah, the recording might be a problem, I'll try to search for some solution and let you know. Do you have a dvd recorder ?
Is this really the fastest route possible? I remember a possibility to get thrown into jail right away on the first map and then meeting Deidrana (a.k.a. Queen / mean hag)in a sequence at the jail with a chance to shoot her right away.

Dunno if its possible to kill her with starter equipment, though Magic might be able to do it with his shooty-shoot-shoot-gun.  Cheesy

Just theory though - your route looks great anyhow! Good luck to you!!

If I heard correctly that only happens if some towns are taken and you surrender at Alma, get interrogation from the queen(I can't spell her name Smiley )!

That was my second chance of recording, but I found out that our video player can only record tapes!
BTW I forgot to mention how I will avoid the enemies, quite simply. When you enter a sector with enemies you have a choice where to start so I set at one of the sides and just go to another sector going to my destination in a zig-zag route! The only sector in which I could get trouble is the one up of Meduna Airport, because there are trees on the south-east side and I have to sneak through a TANK(So will I do it only at night)!

Aww, too bad. Don`t remember this trick 100%, would have been nice though.

Good luck with the tank, they usually pwn you with one hit (nice animation though
Wink ). Remember that you`ll be safe if you stay connected to them.

That's a very known trick, but Meduna sectors are quite full of enemies and you usually can't go along the edge of the map, because of obstacles and I'm not even sure that going there in night would be an advantage since enemies have night/ultra vision, but you don't Smiley

As for the recording, I am able to record this game using Hypercam2 in fullscreen 640x480x30fps uncompressed including audio with a small mouse cursor flickering. This all on a 2,5 years old pc with just one cpu core.
Took some time to think about the tank problem. What if you took grunty with you to Meduna and used him as cannon fodder to get past the tank?

No need I just need to go at night! (note the guards are less at night or were they just more based on the north!)

Well ok I will try to record on my brother's laptop! This Should work!

You can also move to the side of a map to initiate travel, then abort the travel in the map screen. You will then return to the first map and can choose to move down the side close to the exit. This will not save much time, if any, but it saves game time, meaning that your mercs will be less fatigued.

And while Ewil is right about the obstacles, I'm fairly sure that a route can be found along which no obstacles block your path. And travelling at night might not give you any advantage over the enemies, it will certainly help to stop them from spotting you from halfway across the map, as they'd need to be much closer for them to spot you.

Also, I would love to see this run happen, and I think you've got some pretty interesting ideas in getting close to Deidranna, Pendrokar. Good luck with the run!

heh just found out that I won't need the wire cutters(I can make Magic already go to the next sector even if the wire wall is his obstacle!) and Magic isn't even going to sleep(with 2 canteens I already can make him get to the destination and with the hint henkie gave)! Though killing Deidranna with an silenced UZI is not easy(even hitting Deidranna in the head takes only 4-8 Dmg each shot!)! So I may still have to go after the CLAW shotgun!
If you can hit her often enough (perhaps with one or more bursts), you can knock her out, then walk up to her and stab her to death. Alternately, you could take a merc with throwing knives along, as knives bypass armor and can be quite deadly up close. Of course, if there's many enemies swarming around her, this won't work.

Looks like I'll have to reinstall this game and do some checking myself.

wow i just remembered that i own this game, that was 9 years ago, maybe i should reinstall it, it was pretty fun

Magic actually is equipped with armor-penetrating ammo for the uzi. Normally the uzi is equipped with a standard ammo pack, but the armor-piercing bullets do ENOUGH damage against Deidranna (10-15 dmg a shot in the head and around 50 with a burst fire(know that if you interrupt the burst fire in real time NPC's act as nothing happened you can even kill civilians this way))! So I won't go after the shotgun!
Ok I finally and quietly got a hold of my brother laptop and did the run on Jagged Alliance 2 in 3 segments(640x480 20 fps used compression(so quality a bit force but nothing that would make it very bad to watch))! Will be uploading to filefront soon and streaming on Gametrailers.
Just need to analyze the timings right!
So from the planned beginning all that changed was 3 segments and no visitation to Estoni!
I wonder how the timing will be done since there are 2 ways: Take total video time or count only game timer. Anyway, can't wait to see the run Smiley
I would think real time, as the game timer shows the time in days and hours ingame, which I've not seen used for any other speedrun here. Plus the timer doesn't show up after game completion (though you could call it up, I suppose).

Anyway, I'd love to see your run too, Pendrokar.
Well I have uploaded the segments up at FileFront(someone couldn't wait and downloaded them when I didn't notify even!). And a combined video is being compressed at gametrailers.com. It was uploaded there 6 or more hours ago and knowing this I will have to reupload it there!
Filefront uploaded videos are put here - http://hosted.filefront.com/Pendrokar/2203404
Note: Lousy compression stands for the hypercam compression used when it was recording(I chose Auto so I really don't know which it took but the filesize and quality were a bit damaged)
The Compressed videos stand for the lousy video compression turned into Xvid(used ffdshow codec pack) video compression and audio in MP3! Personally I didn't notice any damage in quality! So I recommend downloading the compressed ones!

Things that should not have occured in the run:
1) I should not have killed anybody other than Deidranna so I failed the Magic Silent Assassin status Sad !!! But because I was lucky finding 2 law in the chest I moved on! This would have been minor if someone wouldn't have seen the soldier dying making two Opponent loading times!
2) Minor missed click at Cambria hospital! (2 segment 2:15)
3) Targeted the wrong coast on the airport I should have made the turn only at the second one but luckily Magic didn't step on a mine. (The soldier in the center must have been facing on some other point otherwise I think he would have seen me and that would mean the end of Magic!)
4) I shouldn't have let Magic get to the falling point due to exhaustion!
5) The saving time at the end of the second segment was quite long! Never had that before!
6) Could have been faster on third segment. But I was lucky to have both law's fire and be precise(sometimes magic shoots at his legs!)
7) I missed just one pixel making magic take a shot at the floor!

Yes I really should improve this run but I won't for quite some time!!!
Congratulations! Downloading right now, comments coming soon...

EDIT: Alright, had a look at it, neat job Pendrokar. You have already mentioned the main mistakes, so I`ll just comment some minor other things I observed:

- Is it necessary to be in stealth mode in Sector F9 after picking up the LAWs, or is this just to bypass the remaining enemies?

- I think the straight route from F7 to F9 would have been quicker than taking the tour through Cambria. Any special reasons for doing this?

- Don`t know if it`s just me, but I think you could have taken a more direct route for destroying the outer walls of the palace. Haven`t checked for myself though.

- Same thing with the last gulp from the bottle: Don`t know if it`s really necessary, it looked as if you just would have had the right amount of stamina left to skip it.

Please don`t feel offended by my comments (I wouldn`t want to do this over and over again...)- really nice run!

Although I do hope you`ll have the nerves to optimise this someday...  Wink

I once tried to make magic run to the chest. This is what happens - an enemy crawls near the wall and is ready to shoot at Magic. If he gets hurt the whole speedrun is over because there is no way to heal him!

Less game time passed. When Magic gets exhausted till the point he disobeys map route orders I need to get him to move to another sector manually(if no enemies in sector)! Even if magic finds a place to sleep when he reaches the palace his energy will be just a bit better doe to zigzag movement on the map!

Firstly there are a bunch of mines there that is why I do that strange movement! Secondly There is a distance needed when shooting with the LAW(6/7 grids)!

Well yes I could have saved a second or two without it though with less stamina Magic shoots worse! He could even miss when face-to-face!
No further questions, you pwned me here.
Some people think they can outsmart me.
Wow. That speedrun was both cowardly and shameful.
Also, awesome.

(seriously, brah. For the people that have slugged it out from sector to sector, with all the bugs present in the release version, and countless hours hunting down the last enemy in a sector. For you to be dousing canteens with 10% fatigue left, using full-auto hollowpoints to knock her down.

scandalous.  atrocious.)
Congratz on the run, it was funny that Deidranna didn't hear the LAW blast even though she was 5 meters away Smiley

... and didn`t notice several bursts of AP-munition ripping hear head appart.  Kiss

heh i didnt even make it that far, ever, maybe i like to overcomplicate things instead of just walking over there and pop her head? Smiley

great run

Oh yeah I forgot! She sometimes stands near the wall. But I must not hit her otherwise when I walk in she gets angry!
I will upload the quicksaves to filefront too soon! So the verifying could begin!
