A few friends of mine are putting together a speedrun themed youtube channel, highlighting cool and funny runs to watch. I am trying to convince them that they should cover all runs, including TAS stuff, not just the top runs posted on SDA. They seem to have the idea that there are people who dislike TAS videos so much that they would stop watching a channel that "promotes" them.

Is this really how the community here feels? Or would guys watch regardless of the source material?
Thread title:
HELLO!
Around here?  No, there's actually a good amount of overlap and cooperation.

When I did my sole SDA published run, I was working with 3 different TASers, since I was the only one doing live runs of the game. Smiley
I haven't been around for long, but from what I've seen I feel like people just see them as different things, not inherently good or bad.

It's more like TAS are running the game as fast as possible doing every single possible trick and 'normal' speedruns are using that knowledge to do the best humanly possible. One helps the other.
Now Reap The Whirlwind!
I don't think that there is a problem with TAS's here. They can be very helpful to finding glitches and improving a run.
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
Personally I have no problems with TAS.  If I had to nitpick, I would say that they are manipulating and cheat the system in order to complete their runs, but then that is what a TAS is.  Not to mention that just like Presjpolk and Stormknight said, it is because of TAS runs that strategies can be created in order to complete legit speed runs.

If anything, I would say that there is more of a mutual respect for each other than "hatred."
Yeah, there's no problem.

It's people who don't understand the difference between a non TAS and TAS who go all "LELTASCHEATERHACKER". (etc etc)
<(^_^)>
If there are people who hate TAS's, then it's their problem for not understanding the purpose of TAS's. In other words don't worry about it, and if anyone hates on it, then they're being idiots and chances are, actually sensible people will downvote those comments  and mark them as spam. As long as you're not parading standard runs and stuff as TAS's, then you're fine.

It's amazing how long the perception that there's some sort of adversarial relationship between real-time speedrunners and TASers has persisted. Any drama there was on that front was resolved about... oh, eight years ago?

I think now everyone recognises all the different facets of the community as amazing resources for us all to learn and improve from.
What I personally don't appreciate is people that try to pass off TAS's as legitimate speedruns. If you're going to post about it on youtube, you would want to be careful about making that distinction.

That wouldn't be a problem with their current formatting. They talk about who is doing what and always have title cards giving credit to the runners, including links to the full runs.

If anything they might have an opposite sort of problem. I am concerned about them making jokes at the expense of TSA's being 'fake' runs. You know, the almost expected "This would be a great run if he wasn't cheating" kind of joke. I suppose this is the peril of going into comedy though,  you can get away with almost anything it just has to be funny.
HELLO!
Youtube comments are terrible and are better off ignored. Smiley
I second presjpolk's statement.
Good Youtube commenters are pretty hard to find among the masses of terrible comments, so most of them should be ignored.

This man speaks the truth. YouTube comments are often full of ignorance, malice, and hate. Why? Because people think they can. Because there are no other people on the internet, thus no feelings can be hurt, right?

Wow I thought I took a time warp back to 2005 or 2006. Like other people said, there's really no beef between speedrunners and TASers. A lot of them even collaborate with each other to improve each others' runs.

I love TASes...they're great fun to watch, and the effort involved in making them is intimidating.

Some people may frown on having both contents on one channel, but then you would also have people frowning on reposting content in the first place. I think as long as you are clear on what type of video it is and who made it (perhaps linking to the runner's youtube/twitch account or the link on tasvideos), all would be good.

This. A long time ago there was some bad blood but now we all work together.

Note that the best way to annoy both TASers and unassisted speedrunners is to try to pass off a TAS as an unassisted speedrun. (Doing the reverse mostly only annoys TASers, although it is liable to make the unassisted speedrunners laugh at you.) So it helps to have them clearly labeled to distinguish them from each other.

so pro u don't even know
You may risk alienating some viewers whom have a narrow view of speedrunning and think TASing is a cheat method, but this is a small minority. I echo the earlier sentiments about SDA having no problem with TASvideos and vice versa. There have been many collaborative efforts between the sites in recent years.

As long as you clearly delineate the differences between a TAS and speedrun in your videos you should be fine and I would absolutely watch a channel with that kind of content.
Professional Second Banana
I have mad respect for TASers and have ever since I became active in the speedrunning scene about 3 years ago.  Like several other people have said, the 'rivalry' between console/PC speedrunners and TASers only really existed back in the mid-2000's, and I think it was probably more due to personality conflicts between people in both communities at the time than anything else.

tas VS sda Grin (joking)

I had not make this movie, but the idea is cool and good produced. Some bad cuts in the beginning.

The PSX tas is running over-fast.

Nah, I think what you've got there is that the two TAS vids are running NTSC while the unassisted run is PAL. The arbitrary pauses to keep the runs in sync with each other kind of indicate that at certain points (see the platform-jumping section six minutes in for a prime example of it - both TAS runs remain in time with each other while the unassisted run is a bit slower)
I AM FUCKED ANGRY
Watch the last mission and you see that there is a speed-up (over speed) in the video for the psx tas. You can see it when the elevator is activate or in long ways, it run faster than normal speed.

'Both TAS runs remain in time with each other.'
No, the n64 tas run slower than the sda run. The run from aquatiger was use on the psx ntsc copy and it has the same run time like the pal copy.
