Hello I am fairly new into the Speed running community and am wondering if I can use an emulator for GBA speed running. I I want to run Crash Bandicoots Huge Adventure. If not, is there some recording system for for the Gameboy? Thank you

If you would simply like to do speedruns for your own enjoyment, or for streaming, absolutely nothing prevents you from using an emulator. I believe Visual Boy Advance is widely used in the community, though I'm not an authority by any means.

If you would like to do a speedrun to submit to SDA, your submitted run must be done on original hardware, which could include the Nintendo Gameboy Player (addon for the Gamecube), and recorded using a standard capture device. However, you could still practice on emulator until you were able to acquire the relevant hardware.
I use Visual Boy Advance for practice and a Gamecube Gameboy Player for capture.  I'd highly recommend both.  Another option for capture is a modded DS phat.  Using the DS gives you portability and a good controller for GBA games but getting the mod costs more than the Gameboy Player.

VBA emulation isn't perfect.  I find it tends to lag a lot more than either a DS or a Gamecube.  Lag sometimes hurts your time but it can also make pulling off tricks in action games easier.  I don't know how accurate it would be to compare times between the emulator and a real system if you had close competition.

Emulation is OK for practice, but not for submissions.

For recording, the easiest to play/record is the Game Boy Player attachment to the Gamecube. It is a bit of a pricey option if you don't already have any of the components. If you do have to buy a Game Boy Player, MAKE SURE IT HAS THE DISC. A lot of sellers sell it without it. For a controller, either use the Game Boy Advance to Gamecube connector cable, or my personal choice is a PS2 to Gamecube controller adapter. Some people use Gamecube controllers, but I think the analog stick is weird.

An alternate option is using a DS Phat/Lite that has been modified for video out. The quality will be better, but the controls honestly aren't quite as nice. You'll need something like this to do this type of capture. This may be a bit cheaper, but comfort may be an issue.
The DS is a great portable option for playing GBA games because of its excellent control scheme, but the cost of the mod makes it more expensive than the Gameboy Player. penalty kick online
