1) Why the name Ruto?  Any reason to pick a particular name?

You see, the names of your companions changes depending on what name you chose for your Hero.  With the name I've chosen, the Prince will be named Glynn, and the Princess will be named Elani.  I liked those names for both better than all of their other names (most of which absolutely suck).

2) Do you know what the encounter rates are for the various tiles?

No, to be honest, I just assumed that they were the same as Dragon Warrior I, where Deserts and Mountains were the highest, and Swamps and Forests were the second highest.

Also, I know that I could hack it, but then I'd just have to deal with it later anyways.  I'd rather just figure it out now for the real thing.  If, say, Ryan8bit could run some tests on different methods at the slots, then I could potentially put them off for now, but I haven't been able to get in contact with him.
Yes!  I did it!  I actually got a Wizard Wand!  And I did it using one specific method that was devised from a bit of info that AxeMan provided me.

It seems that if you mash the A button while one of the others slots are still settling, you can actually change the odds a bit.  So every time I attempt it, I just mash the A button over and over again, even when all three wheels are already slowing down, I just press the A button over and over again until all of them have stopped.  That's how I did it.

But...one thing.  I forgot to record that segment.  Is it ok if I record all the other segments without starting over to get this one?  As long as I say I forgot to record me getting the first Wizard Wand?
YES, YES, YAHOO!  I managed to get another Wizard Wand, AND I was able to record it this time!  Do you guys want me to upload all the failed attempts along with the successful attempt or not?

So now that I've finally found a somewhat consistent method, is it ok for me to offscreen and manipulate the rest of the Wizard Wands?  For this test run at least?
For the test, of course you can manipulate and do whatever in a test run, it doesnt matter much, if someone has an issue they will just ask you, and if you explain how it came to be, they wont mind, as long as the final run has everything in it, a test run doesnt even have to be close to what you have planned. (Like for my 100% Paper Mario test, I'm at like 3 hours at chapter 5 for the real one I hope to be sub 2 hours at this area)
Well, you know, now that I actually CAN explain how to get those Wizard Wands, I think I'm ready to move on now, so I'll manipulate the rest with save states and stuff.
So I got all the Wizards Staves I wanted and everything.  I tried to get through the Dragon's Horn dungeon without buying any armor, but every time I tried, I couldn't even make it to the Dragon's Horn.  I'll tell you one thing, the enemies get a lot harder once you reach the desert before the Dragon's Horn, and it's a long walk.  I'm going to try a few more times just to see if I can't at least make it there without buying armor, but if it's not possible, I may have to buy some armor for Ruto and Glynn.
Alright, I've decided that I'm going to purchase the Full Plate Armor just because they're cheaper than the Clothes of Hiding, and help my survivability.  Also, I was under the mistaken impression that the Clothes of Hiding increased your Evasion, but I did another quick sweep of the internet, and found that I was mistaken.

I think I've just about figured out everything I'm going to do, all the tactics I'm going to use.  But I have one question.  Do any of you think it'd be worth it to buy an Iron Spear for Glynn?  I find that when I leave for the Dragon's Horn, his attack power is JUST high enough to equal the damage that the Wizard Staff he has can do.
Also, I've now confirmed a few things about what I'm doing. I did a test run of everything up to the Cave of Rhone, and my party is for sure going to get the Clothes of Hiding and Full Plate Armor, as I've found fighting monsters to be extremely hard otherwise (though still possible even in every Crest dungeon, strangely enough...) and I need to be able to do that in order to learn Return and Outside for Glynn in some of the later dungeons.

Also, my party has to go through a significant portion of the game before getting both Flying Water Clothes, with Ruto waiting until the Cave to Rhone before ever getting an upgrade to his armor, so that armor is something I'm really going to need.
Alright guys, here's four more parts!

Segment 5:
Segment 6:

Segment 7:
Oh, hold on, Segment 7 contains some of the manipulation I wanted to off screen. That was a mistake.
Well guys, now I begin one of the longest, most grueling, most difficult segments in the entire run.  It's so long, I wouldn't be surprised if it lasted at least 50 minutes, and even the beginning is pretty tough.  Everything else up to now was just practice and child's play compared to what's coming up...
Oh, how frustrating and assinine!  I just barely survived that segment and actually managed to make it to the end, only to find out that I didn't have enough money to buy the stuff I needed to buy!  Sheesh, now I'm gonna have to start all over again and get another Wizard Wand before headed off to where I need to go....

Oh well.  At least the segment wasn't quite as long as I thought.  Only a little over a half hour.
Alright guys, Segment 8 is now completed, and in less than half an hour!  Yay!

Segment 8:

There's a word for that
So this entire page isn't just you posting: Not intimately familiar with this game, so what makes a run of it so hard compared even to other DQ/DW runs?
Um...to be honest, I don't know.  It's tedious and frustrating due to how many Wizard Staffs you need to win from the Slots, sure, but hard?  I don't really know where people get that idea.

If you ask me, it's actually been fairly simple so far :-\.  Of course, maybe that's because I've got access to a page that lists the spell resistances of every monster in the game, the TAS which is excellent for route planning (just don't try to emulate its battle strategies), worlds maps that come with enemy zones that tell me exactly where all the monsters are, and whole pages dedicated to telling me the stats of monsters, so maybe I'm just more knowledgable than others about the game.
Sigh...alright guys, I'm going to be taking down the last video I posted...it turns out, I forgot to pick up the Sun Crest on my way to Wellgarth.... Sad

Don't worry though, I'll edit the post with the segment links on it so that it directs to the new video.

EDIT:  There, did it.
Well, it was hard, it was long, and it was frustrating!  It was Segment 9, availble for your viewing pleasure!

Segment 9:

Oh.....ASSSSINNNNINNNNEEEE!!!!

You know how I picked up the Watergate Key at the end of Segment 8?  Well guess what?  It turns out, my inventory was full, so even though the game told me I got the Watergate Key, what actually ended up happening was that I never got it at all.  Now I have to actually REDO Segment 9 all over again!
You can always do one untaped segment where you run from everything, get the Watergate key, and then run back (or Return).

I watched your other segments, and it's pretty entertaining.  It's amazing you made it to Beran without once failing to run.
No, it's just not in me to do that.  Anyways, I've redone the third part of Segment 8, and all of Segment 9 (did it on my first try actually.  Having more experience to get to Level 10 with really helped).  So, no skin off my nose.

By the way, do you have any questions so far?
How many total Wizard Wands/Wizard Rings did you end up getting?  Is there any reason you tell the item shop keeper you don't want anything more, and then talk again and buy something else anyway?  Does it affect your luck in getting a lottery ticket?

Do you ever plan to equip a shield or helmet?

I must say, the updated version of your run to Beran is a bit more impressive.  However, do you plan to replace the Leaf of the World Tree now?
Just watched segment 10.  If you're going back to Midenhall to get the Token of Erdrick, you should do it on your last trip to get the 2nd Magic Loom.  You can use the warp in the shrine near there.  You can also use the Flame Shrine warp to get the Helmet.

Part 11 - Why did you take the long way back to Tuhn?
Quite the bonus finding the Iron Spear.  Does this make Glynn at all useful attacking?
Also, what are you saving gold for these days?

Enough for me to get over 16500 Gold before leaving for the Dragon's Horn, which I think any future speed runner should aim for.

Do you ever plan to equip a shield or helmet?

Yes.  Ones that don't suck.

No.  Not unless I need to.

Really?  Darn, I didn't realize that.

Yes it did.  It was a great bonus, though not necessarily needed.  Glynn was already good enough as an attacker with the Fireball spell, so it's not like he's all of a sudden a dynamo at it.  Otherwise, I would've made sure to get him an Iron Spear back at Leftwyne.  As for Gold, I'm hoping to get three Shields of Healing so that each person can cast Healmore whenever they want.  I'm not sure whether or not that's practical, but, I haven't been able to nor have I needed to buy Herbs so far, so that's another reason I haven't been spending.  Really, aside from Herbs and the Shields of Strength, I've bought everything I needed to buy already.
Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.

It's his second best weapon, only the Falcon Sword is better. So it's his "most damage in one attack" weapon.
Yep, basically.  Also, I'm almost done with the very last segment before the big grind.  It's just taking a little longer than I thought >_<...
