Did you just hit that stage of life where you realize your childhood is over and all that's ahead of you now is bills, house payments, and 40+ hrs a week work?
Yes and no. I'm 17 in my senior year and my workload is really heavy. On top of homework I have a job. On top of that is socialization. Trying to balance everything can get pretty stressful. On top of that is college. This is a time in life when so much is happening so quickly and all at once. Maybe after high school, when I get into college and I'm on my own...maybe then things'll slow down. As for now, I regret to say that I need to start being more productive with my time.

Take it from this grad student. You'll keep tricking yourself, saying well after blah blah I'll have more time, but it's actually backwards. I'm myself saying after I finish grad school, I'll get more time... but I know I'm likely fooling myself.
As for this run, I think I'll try this over winter break. Even though Ico is pretty easy, I don't want to kill myself so I think I will multi-seg instead of SS. I am waaay out of practice though. And oh yeah, I haven't even played Shadow of the Colossus yet (been avoiding that thread). So I'll obviously play that before I would begin even thinking about this.
So I've been working nonstop on Ico for about 5 days now, ever since I finished FF2. I was originally going to make this multi-segment, but because I was fed up with how random and unlikely it is to do certain things (I've tried avoiding one encounter over 50 times now and succeeded once, and that was a few years ago), I'm going for single-segment. I also get the feeling that if I do it multi-seg, everyone is just going to ask why I didn't SS, even if it is slower.
While researching the game, I expected to figure out a new sequence break or two. I already considered Ico to have the best level design ever, but now I am floored at the work of the design team, especially since this was the first video game they ever created (they were hired from Sony's movie department mostly). Either not enough people are trying to uncover sequence breaks, or the design team really was all over things, because so many parts look tantalizingly breakable, but are barely out of reach.
I've done a bunch of test runs, some of which I didn't die at all or get Yorda accidentally taken away. So I've started recording attempts, but haven't even made it to the last save point yet. Ico is such a random game for a puzzle/platformer, I keep dieing on the most incredible things that have never happened before or after. Oh well, I'll keep plugging away. This is just to let anybody know who's interested.
Edit: well, I just died right before the second tower, and things were going so peachy. The thing I don't like about Ico is that all your deaths always feel really cheap. Yorda was just about to make the last jump so I could bash people with the door, she gets caught, I jump to save her, and the camera rotation of her getting caught made Ico jump to his death. I promptly let out a 10-second ARRRRGGGHH.
I wasn't going to accept any run with deaths in it, so after another couple of failed runs, I finally did it. I have a no-death SS Ico run that is pretty good. I did have a couple things I messed up on that I never had before, and some bad luck at parts, but since it's SS I'm quite satisfied. Since that site's (forget the name, not TG) best time was 5 hours and change, Dr. Ian's 2 player run was 2:20, and saxman's goal was 2:30 - 3:00, I think I won't be doing this any more.
I did play a little more conservatively at the end than I would have liked, but that doesn't actually cost much in the way of time. With a multi-seg, it's possible to skip some of the battles that I fight, but since most are extremely rare ("only ever done it once" rare), I chose not to go that route.
I haven't timed it yet, but I think it's a little over 2 hours, like maybe 2:04 or something. I will edit with timing details later. I think if the run is flawless and the player gets lucky, sub 2 hours should be possible, even if no more sequence breaks are found. The randomness in a SS is why I wouldn't want to run this game again, that's for sure.
I can't say much more than congratulations! I've been tearing through this game recently since I got it at a Buy 2 get 1 free sale from Gamestop (I had it for months but never touched it) and I've just been so wrapped up in this game. Fantastic title to be sure.
Well, I timed it and got 2:02:35. That means that if I didn't make my 2 semi-large mistakes, I would have probably been under a minute away from 2 hours, but not quite there.
I did this with 2 VHS tapes, pausing to switch. Because this is IMHO the most beautiful visuals, sound (not music), and best plot ever, I thought it would be worth it to tape the ending (all the way to the fin screen) and also the attract screen intro and intro cut scenes at the start of the game. That way, although some of the in-game cut scenes are skipped, people who haven't played before will be able to understand the plot.
I will contact Radix about this and send the tapes off to Nate when I get the ok. If anyone would like to help out verifying when it's time, I would appreciate it greatly.
You suck Enhasa. Really, you do. I've been working on this for the last couple of weeks then you pull the rug out from under me and beat me by a couple of minutes.
How did you time it, BTW? Whenever I timed my runs, I went from when I got control of ICO to when I delivered the final blow on the queen.
I had 2:07:38 but if you take out 2 deaths and a really stupid ass jump (all in the ICO only section) I figure I would be within 2 minutes of you.
Ooh, I'm sorry. I'm not really about the recognition, more about seeing good runs done (plus I'm a bit lazy), so if you had just announced that you were going to do this, I probably would have ceded to you and done something else maybe. But since I've recorded it, now I want the recognition.
I timed exactly the same way.
Man, good thing I never died during my 2nd tape (Ico only), because I might have punched a hole through the wall.
After it's up, feel free to use my route to try for sub 2 hours or maybe do a segmented run. I'd be willing to help you out. I want to try for sub 2, but then I remember getting 6-7 hit combo'd by the enemies at one point, twice having to abandon calling and have to forcefully carry Yorda somewhere, and stuff like that, and I think it would be better for my blood pressure if I didn't. Maybe first I'll look at the tape to figure out exactly how much time I lost at certain points to see if it's worth it.
I typically forcefully carry Yorda everywhere. For the most part it's just faster.
Since my ICO-only section had problems that mess up my timing, I want to do a comparison before that. What was your time up through when you gain control of ICO at the hanging prison (immediately after the cut-scene ends)? According to my timer, I had 1:45:19. Then 22:19 from there to the death of the evil queen.
I found a couple minor spots where I was able to cut time in the west tower by trimming both doors lines before I go into the center, then after blowing up the boarded door going back down instead of around, down the dried up waterfall, then around and back in to find Yorda (what was I thinking?!), which probably all that saves me 30-45 seconds. I cut out as much of the fighting as possible, but there's inevitably some places you do have to fight. And other than a couple seconds on a brain fart forgetting about skipping the cutscene before the hanging prisons, I skipped them all fairly well.
I'll definately be watching your run. Then beating the crap out of it later. Heh.
Well I'm sure everyone forcefully carries Yorda everywhere while running (double meaning), but what I meant was calling her to come up or down a ladder. I had to go back up/down the ladder and position her better, which is agonizingly stupid.
You're not going to believe this, given your 2 deaths and missed jump, but I got 1:39:54 up to right before crossing the bridge before the cutscene and 22:41 afterwards. Estimate the cutscene and there you go. I have no idea how your Ico section would have been so much better than mine; maybe it's because I don't sequence break enough compared to the rest of the run. (That cylindrical room where you climb down seems like it's breakable, but I couldn't find anything.) It's probably because I am awful at that shadow fight at the end; worst of all, my standard deviation there is really high. I lost a good bit of time because I thought I killed the last shadow at the altar, waited 5-10 seconds, realized I actually hadn't, and had to run all the way to the complete opposite side of the room to kill the final guy, get the cut scene, and run all the way back to the altar.
I did the trick you talked about. Actually, I did it the first time I played the game and didn't realize anyone did it any other way. I probably saved most of my time on you from cutting out fights, although some of the fights I cut out, I had to get hit first and waste time. I also didn't cut out some extra fights that would be infeasible in a SS, and one of the fights I can probably cut out most of the time (the last one actually), I chose to fight anyway because my previous run was going great until I got cheezed there and got knocked off to my death. If I had known the fight would take as long as it did, I probably would have went for it again.
Edit: If some of the Japanese Shadow of the Colossus runners did this game too, we'd both be getting owned I think. I actually kinda suck at 3D action games. My strength and love is in theory and planning routes, which is why I mostly do RPGs. If there were more action instead of puzzles in Ico, it might have been the kind of game I wouldn't have even played.
Ok, since I'm a nice guy, I might try recording a run of the ICO-only section and then putting it on an FTP to show you how I do it. I still can't believe I was faster, on the ICO section. My two deaths fortunately weren't far into the sections (Hanging prisons: 2nd to 3rd cage and cliffside, the camera changing gap) but my fall from the horizonal gears in the 2nd secion is what cost the most time by far for me in my run.
The shadow fights are indeed looney, but here's a hint. Use that 2nd analog stick and look around. Whenever I do it, I'm always killing the alter ones for the first couple and the last couple. I've been fortunate never to have to go back. Maybe it's because I use the analog stick there more than any place else in the game.
As for the cylindrical room, it is not breakable. I tried jumping down the gaps you normally jump over on the side of the room...death. I don't know why, I've fallen farther and survived just fine. Evil game.
You would be nice, but it wouldn't be beneficial to me outside of curiosity since I'm not running this game again.
I was more worried about the gear section than anything else in the run. Oh, I forgot to say, you didn't forget to skip the cutscene; it's unskippable. So you have to subtract the time for the cutscene from my time. If you take out falling off the gears, the rest of your time including 2 deaths is still slightly better I think, likely because I got ultra-screwed with the shadow fight. What I did was bad jumps into the water because I was paranoid of jumping onto land and dying, and not hopping around because I was afraid I would miss and jump and die.
I do the same thing in the shadow fight with the right analog and only going to the altar twice but since I'm facing the long ends, it's kinda tough to get a good view since the camera doesn't pan out enough. I don't know if it would be faster to stand near the back, since you would be able to see everybody. I think the time you waste compared to being up near the spawn points is not worth it, but at least you wouldn't ever miss a guy. I'm thinking my fights might go better in general too if I turned my back more on enemies.
Don't be so quick to ever say something isn't breakable. People still are finding new things in Metroid games, for example.
The cutscene actually is partially skipable. You can't skip anything before Yorda says "I'm sorry." but when you get to where it starts raining and such, THAT part is skipable.
I've tried jumping down from numerous angles, so far no luck. I should try sometime dangling first, then falling. But I still think it's weird that if you normally fall, it kills you. The gap height feels about the same as the one right after the "lower Yorda's cage switch" which I can fall (and even JUMP down) and just fall on my butt.
As for the shadow fight, you kinda have to look around as well as move the camera. It seems to help me look around better. Plus getting a feel of how many there are. The number is constant, though I've never tried counting.
As for the queen fight, did you know that the sword always ends up in the same locations? Right just behind the stairs, far left a little ways back, far left on the stairs, far left injected into the wall, and waaaaaaaaaaaay deep right of the aisle. Just thought that was interesting.
Yeah, I knew the sword locations were set in stone. Although since my memory isn't the best, I just remembered right, left, left, left, back right. I always got uneasy in a tower too, because the similarity of the two makes it sometimes confusing which door to go through and such.
Hey Sir VG, I have a question for you. How serious are you gonna be in taking the best time for Ico? I'm asking because, I like to see great runs for games I like (I don't really care who does them), and while I feel I improved FF2 from A- to A/A+, I would only give my Ico run about a B (I grade tough). In several weeks' time, I might try this again, depending again on how serious you are with this. If I made a sub 2 hours, and I think I definitely could, would you still be interested in this? Or I could just list all the possible improvements I can think of in my current run. I just basically want to know, how devoted are you to this?
If ICO could be done in under 2 hrs, that would be totally A material. As I said, my time was 2:07 but I only figured 3 major errors which certainly wasn't 7 minutes worth. I don't how else I could improve other than better luck and batting practice with Ken Griffey.
I'm working a lot this week so I don't have time at the moment for another good round, but I'll be going back at it later to tackle it some more and hope for some better luck. But if yours gets digitized, I'm definatly gonna verify and see if there's anything to pick apart for your sake and mine.
Anyway after thinking about it, I realized how much went wrong in my 2:02 that I could have gotten better luck on. I also realized there's a better route in one room early on that saves about 10-15 seconds maybe (as well as makes it easier), my fights in general go worse than average, I look really stupid for about 5 seconds in one part near the end, and I don't skip one fight that I could because I was playing it safe. There's also a couple of things I've thought of trying out (thought them up along with the better route in the shower of course).
I think I'm just being hard on myself though. I'm just saying, it can be done sub 2. I was just trying to figure out which of us would do it. Maybe we can figure out once it's posted or maybe I try again? I don't know your stance on improving other people's runs by taking their routes. There's a lot of differing opinion on this.
I wouldn't recommend working any more on this except to maybe get better in general, because I bet I do some things differently, and it's easier for you to watch what I do than it is for us to figure out by trying to list everything.
Because ICO is fairly linear, it's not about "stealing your route", since there really only is 1. However I would LOVE to know how to improve things.
One thing I'm curious of if you did on times you did have to fight is attack the shadows on the ground, cause it will bring them back up instantly so you can keep swatting them.
I should digitize my run for you to see, but given I've been having problems trying to compress them down enough, I'll need to play with things a bit.
But these is an awesome game that I want to see it so perfect, it can't be improved, not even by TASers if they ever got to PS2 TASing. ^^;;
