How to record a speedrun anyway?

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

How to set up that kind of thing recording those movies, and finally an AVI in a computer, without an emulator?

Don't tell things like "just use a captre card", tell me what is a capture card and what kind of shop to buy it.

When I was recording SSBM movies, i pointed a camera to the screen (either TV or monitor, I have both cables for GC) and record it. Of course, the resulting movie is terrible! The screen is flashing!

for my max payne speed runs i got some help from radix, since its directx he pointed me to a prog called fraps, however the trial only lets you do 30 seconds at a time ..

so i just play the game then while its loading press 1 key to start recording, then that same key at the end .. play as usual in the mean time.

you end up with a multi gig file that you need to process with virtual dub or something similar to cut it down.

some games have built in recording facilities. but i only play PC

...I play games on a TV! recording from a computer screen is kinda easy (but I don't know if it supports recording DirectX objects)

I need to record from a TV screen! what should I do?
(I won't use my VCR. It can only record TV programs (those transfers using a TV cable))

actually, can i submit a vhs? cause i wanted to do some speed runs for Sonic games Grin

i dont know jack crap about how to do video-to-digital thingys and i would really rather leave it up to someone else. and please email me an answer, i probably wont come here again for a while (i have a tendency to forget things) and if i can mail a vhs to whoever, where would i send it to?

If you decide to get a capture card, get an internal one if at all possible. External cards are fine for laptops and stuff, but there can be issues with USB bus saturation and cpu utilization.
A good card to get would be the Leadtek Winfast2000XP. Its an internal PCI card; you can find it everywhere (and its dirt cheap)- here's an <a href="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-122-181&depa=0">example</a>
One caveat is that it does not process sound-it offloads that function directly to your sound card (which a more technically elegant solution, but it involves an extra cable). To be able to capture both video and audio, just get a mini-stereo to RCA adapter. You can probably find one at a redioshack or something for like $3USD.

I just got a capture card, now, how do i record on input one? I can't figure out how.

EDIT: Oh ya, I don't know where to put the sound wire into the computer. I have a dell if that helps. If I can figure those two things out, I'm good to go!

How to say this, pretend your plug in the videogame system into the vcr. You play the game on the same channel as you would watch the a video on, usually. It's an extra channel, and sometimes it's called input 1. Sometimes it's called other things, but it doesn't matter. I can't get to that channel on my card, or it least I don't know how to. I hope I made it clear.
