Hi!

I'm recording a video using Fraps, and everything else works, but I can't get the file to play in VirtualDub. It says there's no audio codec (tag fffe), although the file plays OK in Media Player.

I'm not sure, but I'm suspecting the problem is that the audio may be in multichannel format, which VirtualDub can't handle. Fraps always records sound in this format for me, and I can't change that, but could I somehow downmix the sound in the AVI file into stereo so that I could open it in VirtualDub?

If not, is there another free software that I could try instead of VirtualDub for editing the video?

Cheers.

It is more likely that you don't have VFW codec that is able to properly decode the audio format.
You could try AVIDemux or perhaps wrap the movie in an avisynth script and then load it into VD.
Hmm. Well, I'll try the programs you mentioned. Thanks!
AVIDemux had the same problem, but Avisynth script did the trick. I can now load the video in VirtualDub, and the file rendered from VD seems to work perfectly, sound and all. So, thanks again! It's difficult to find tips like this by googling, so your help was invaluable. Smiley

It's kind of funny that VD can't handle the file by itself, since the script doesn't alter the video in any way, it has nothing but the file location in it. Shrug. Oh well, as long as it works, I'm not complaining.
what does your avisynth script look like?

AviSource("X:\temp\temp.avi")
wild. i don't understand what's wrong with opening it directly in vdub then.
