Snowboard Assassin
This has been undergoing some thought since 2009, and I'm really into starting a new speed run of a very unique game; Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak. Since I've started to play this game over and over, I've had the liberty to memorize all that this game requires you to do to complete it exactly. This is what I have listed so far, to account it as a 100% run;

To complete 100%, the following is required;
+Beat the game (defeat Spat the Devil Hamster at Spat Tower)
+Reunite 21 of the broken couples together
+Learn every Ham Chat that was lost (86 words total)

Game info:
The story takes place of Hamtaro (that's you) to find out what's going on in the hamster world, where the amount of friendship and love is dropping dramatically. Thankfully, you have your partner Bijou to hepl you out on ressolving this crisis. Only to encounter the crook who is breaking these couples up; the evil hamster named Spat. Luckily his opposite ham ham, Harmony, arrive at the Clubhouse to help you and Bijou out on the defeat of Spat. Not to mention, you have Ham Chats to relearn and learn from your quest; they'll help you out in the long run!

There's a side quest to this game that lets you collect all the gemstones and make jewelry out of them. Although, i don't believe that counts for completing the game, and it takes a very sad amount of time to complete them all. But I'll leave that up to all.

Current tips/strategies;
Always run (holding B) to save time.
Learn ham chats that are available and near, to learn for completion of the Ham Chat book.
Enter in the dance moves for the dance contest; required [will add later]

And in case you guys have any tips for me, I'd love to hear them. I would also appreciative of streaming/recording my run. I do have a Dazle but my current one is a little complicated to work with. Still trying to work it out. I'd also love to hear your thoughts on this and any feedback you might have. My plan to get this going will vary, but hopefully kick in soon.
Thread title:
Sounds like you have a good plan of what you're gonna do. I personally think that unless the jewelry serves an actual useful purpose as to beating the game and such, it shouldn't count towards 100%. I've never even heard of this game, but I'd be glad to see the progress you make. I give you my support for this, even if it's of little value.

I realize I haven't been updating in awhile, but it's come to my attention that my run of this game is ready for me to speed run. Now that I have been done with school a while ago, I'm planning to record my session in a single segment for 100% completion. Everything on my side is ready to go, and I can only hope things go smoothly in my play through.

And thank you again for the support velocikiller! It's much appreciated.
Touhou anyone? :D
I used to play this game a lot when I was little. I do remember Spat and Harmony. I also remember the "Hula" dance competition that I sucked at royally. I hated that event. >.< I give you my support as well! Knock'em dead!

Got any kind of estimation? I played around with any% a while ago, but never got any usable goal. I'm looking forward to the result! Hitaro needs to reply in this thread as well.

There is no randomness really, can't think of any hard tricks, just remembering where to go and having a good route before you start. This will be the cutest run on SDA.
I got inspired by watching SGDQ and i thought of a game i'd like to pick up. I instantly thought of this game because i played this alot as a kid and it's not very known. I see the last post is already a year ago. Is there a route already made for this game (any%)? The only speedrun i can find is a chinese one on Youtube but it's artwork looks smoother. But maybe that's just the version difference. Also i can't read chinese so i don't know what the desciption says.

My question is: Is there still anyone interested in this game?

I'm going to dig into the chinese speedrun and see if i can get a route going. For now i don't see this game having any sequence breaks/glitches. So it's all down to the most optimal route.
I want run this game too Smiley i help You if i show any glitch or coûnter trigger

Alright, it's been a long time coming but I'm really set on putting this 100% run together.

@Renokye - Thanks for the support! The hula contest. Yes... But fortunatley, I can list out all the ham chats I need to get a guarentee win. (you actually need to do all 3 levels to get a hamchat) Not to mention Lalala is required to win the final dance level.

@Mrsparkle - An estimation is something I defintiely need to work on. Casually, I'd say three hours. But after routing my run, I wanna say an hour. But don't quote me on that completely. No randomness at all. It's just about what you need to do, what you have (Ham chats) and the stuff to collect and know where to get it. However, there are luck based mini games that require completion, too. I'm talking about the Ham Amusement Park world.

@Jelmo - No doubt I'm still interested in the game. I just haven't put time into routing my run yet. But that is something I wish to change pretty soon! I also want my run to be a single segment 100% run.

@Kiwoui - If there's a glitch you know of, I would love to hear about it! Thanks!

Ladies and gentlement, this run will be made someday. I swear it.
Snowboard Assassin
Alright! I just finished routing my run, in order to get all of the 3 ending credits.

I believe the accessories, outfit boutiques and the gem collecting don't have any affect to 100% the game. I'll look into it more, but it would devastatingly boring to watch me do all that.

But with this run, the goal is to defeat Spat, restore all couples and get every hamchat. That pretty much makes the game a complete run.

Hoping to run and record soon! My best prediction time is way under 3 hours. Once I time myself, we'll see where I stand.

Just finished my routing of my Any% and my 100% percent run. The any% is based off the one speed run I can find of this game, and it's in Japanese. Which might be faster. However, I will see how long it takes to do it in English, nonetheless.

End Run.

Also, my best guess on the run starting is when I press OKAY after imputing the names for Hamtaro or Bijou. Then the run ends when Spat is defeated at the end (cue is when the Love Shot makes contact the second time).

The overall estimation for an any% run would be 1 hour and 29 minutes, as the japanese run goes. Once I time my run, I'll see what's different.
Speed Running in Robotnik's Basement
...This seems really interesting. As I grew up with Hamtaro, I would love to speed run one of the games they had made (Hamtaro, Ham-Hams Unite, Ham-Ham Heartbreak, Ham-Ham Games, and Rainbow Rescue)

The text in the game goes by slowly from what I remember, so Japanese might be the way to go.
Snowboard Assassin
Yeah you're right. My recent speed time for Ham-Ham Heartbreak was around 1 hour and 29 minutes, as expected. However it took that long to get the final shot on Spat. The Japanese one got to that final shot around 1 hour and 25 minutes. Which makes it faster, which shouldn't come to a surprise as well. That text speed was definitely time cruncher.

I also need to revise both my notes, for spelling errors and route changes. Tongue Hope to get a video recording done in the coming weeks.
Hey, I've just started learning any% of this game, I was wondering if anyone else is still interested/actively working on it
I want to do this game, mainly because I can beat it XD. I just need a setup and I would love to try and stream it.
I just timed my first run tonight and had a 1:39:xx. I don't know the exact time because I messed up my splits at the end by forgetting to turn off my hotkeys before trying to screenshot for twitter. Oops :^)

Still lots of room for me to improve, obviously. I had a messy Boo Manor and a terrible round two with Spat. I'll probably start streaming by the end of the week once I'm comfortable off notes!
Snowboard Assassin
That's great, Swanbeans, 1:39:xx in any% isn't bad at all. Great job! And yes, I'm still interested in running this, too. I just haven't been keeping up to date with progress at the moment. With summer school and all.

I'm a little shy away from the WR, which is 1:25:44. I'm around 1:30:xx at the moment. What makes a difference is due to the Japanese version of the game having faster text.

I know the video I posted says the time is like 1:29:44. But from what I picked up, the time should start with selecting YEP-P to start the game, then end with Harmony telling me I win. Originally I said Spat getting hit with the Love Shot. But the victory dance makes a better end point.

Good to know this thread still lives. I'm actually a brand new runner for the game and it's been pretty fun so far, been saving more time consistently. In response to the post above me, I still believe that the time ending on the second shot of Spat makes more sense. As it is technically the last real input you make in the game, the rest is in-game text (sort of like how Ocarina works with the final blow, or any other RPG Adventure game for that matter). I was wondering if the World Record time is still 1:25:44, because as I keep doing more runs, I am getting closer to possibly rivaling it (I have a 1:34 currently).

Keep this game and the thread alive, it's a really awesome speed game and the competition is cool. Maybe a race sometime, hmmm? Tongue
Snowboard Assassin
If that makes it a more appropriate way to end the time, then we won't mess with it then. Hitting Spat the 2nd time will be a good way to end the run. Smiley

I'm glad to see there is another runner for the game as well! I'll definitely be sure to have my runs up to date as possible.

As far as I'm concerned, that video is the only known run of the game to my knowledge. It is a Japanese version, yet no English WR speed run is known about. It would be great to bring this game out of obscurity.

If the pace of the game is still gonna be fix, with the text dialogue making a huge difference between versions. Still configuring how to work that out. I don't even know if GBA games in Japanese will work on a English GBA.

I'm not sure if you can tell or not but i'm almost positive that's being ran on an emulator (the JP video, based on the brightness of the colors and the detail of the sprites). So if it's possible to find a Japanese rom for this game to use on emulator I'm sure that would be fine. It depends on the community if using an emulator would be valid. Personally, I see no issue with it, but I know many people tend to get up-in-arms about it.
Snowboard Assassin
Personally, I'm not too familiar on how to run an emulator with the actual game on hand. But yes, I do see what you mean given what the video shows. It does appear the game is ran on a emulator. Perhaps I missed that from its description or something. But no matter. This calls for some research down the road this weekend.

Just a note, B spamming skips Dialogue ten times faster, just make sure to NOT press it too fast on dialogue conversations that has questions, as it auto-selects "No-P" once it gets to it, which can really ruin some things and kill a LOT of time, in a bad way, too, of course.

I have a fix to the emulator problem if anybody needs help with it, by the way. It's a modded-VBA which fixes the game-breaking bug of freezing on those "black sequences", although I'm not sure if that kills time, as well, in a "good" way. Probably just better off playing on an official console for serious runs, too, guys! This game is fun. Also, remember to hold B to run. Ooooooooops. Lol.

Quick edit: Oh, and "ported" the any% notes over. More of my thing.

Pressing B will "B" your best friend in this run. Tongue

Awesome Otaku! I'm gonna check those out. Smiley EDIT: As I'm reading it now, I feel the urge to edit the notes out so I'm more specific about my run. Any way we can work that out?

Sure! I found some of the steps to be geared towards people who played the game through very recently, I haven't played it in years so some steps were very confusing for me (so far), and I prefer to just learn the routing before going through the game again. I guess just PM me some steps or edit your post, and I will update the Pastebin, too, man! Smiley

Also, no TAS on this yet? Considering doing one,  although I'm no master TASer, in this game it shouldn't be too hard. Maybe I'll start soon, I guess that would help, at least give us a time on how low things could be with the current route and no-glitch status.

Quick edit: Not sure if possible at the moment, since the game requires a custom emulator that fixes a game-breaking bug. Unfortunate.

Nevermind, it uses the source for the re-recording version, I did not notice that, cool! Maybe I'll try some things, pretty focused on learning and practicing the game right now, though. Tongue

Using a console for serious runs seems a little out-of-hand for this specific game, not only will most people not own the game, but owning a JP version seems even more difficult. Also as far as anything is concerned, it is absolutely not possible to glitch the game, another major factor being that you really can't do anything without getting something else, such as specific hamchats or items. I'm pretty sure you need the sling shot and the red marble in order to finish the game. Maybe only the sling shot, but don't you need to have a specific amount of couples rescued in order to get the love bomb? This games makes it really hard to even try and skip anything.

However, I did end up pulling off a hilarious glitch (the footage is lost now) where you mash B and a directional button as soon as the Scrub-E game starts, it'll launch you at the top of the screen and be indefinitely stuck until the game is over. More of a fun random bug, I don't think it'll be used for anything special, but a funny thing that happened to me recently.
