NEW Video commentary


This speedrun is using a large amount of segments and scripts, as well as some extreme quicksave glitches. If you do not enjoy this kind of speedrun please don't whine, maybe you like my scriptless single-segment run better.

I started to plan out this run in November 2011. Finding new tricks and plan out health and ammo. Recorded first demo February 2nd 2012, and last demo was completed March 4th.
It's in total 107 segments on hard difficulty. Breaking Spider-Waffles old record with 94 segments by 3 minutes and 15 seconds.

Edit 3: Hmm... was that catch on the wall during the drop at 3:16 anything special or clever? I'm fairly sure I've seen that kind of trick in previous runs but don't know exactly how it works. Hmm, I think I should watch SW's run alongside this to appreciate what's been changed.

Edit 4: Hmm... I was kind of expecting to see the alien slave manipulated with grenades into opening the door for you at 6:28 instead of waiting for the glass to smash. Since this didn't happen (and I'm taking for granted that it wasn't a mistake), I'm guessing it's not really a door, just a wall with door texture? Anyway, style points for the Barney kill.

Edit 5: I've watched that boost at 6:52 several times now and have no idea what's going on.

Edit 6: 7:28 wtf... this run definitely needs some form of commentary or written comments. Smiley

As someone who attempts to run goldsrc games with SDA rules to get the runs back on here for viewers... I can see that your opinion is very flawed. If you bothered reading the post, quadrazid did a scriptless SS run of this game for SDA... Just like how I'm working on a scriptless HL run (which he'll beat, if he wanted to).

The whole scripts/scriptless argument is very flawed, but what's done is done. They're banned. Yes I can make a perfect bhop script to beat a 100m record where you just bhop forward. Note that it was the point of that specific custom map. The scripts used in half-life runs don't just finish the game for you or just solve difficult situations. quadrazid finished half-life in 31 minutes, single segment with scripts. The skill that it takes to actually execute something like that... it's an achievement that should be respected, same as this op4 run.

The level of skill that players like quadrazid and rayvex have is something that you'll never understand. Their movement is some of the best the half-life community has ever seen and others including myself consider rayvex as one of the best hldm players out there, because he is. (he needs to poop on spydah more for me, i'm tired of him beating me on bootcamp.)

This run was fuckin stellar, opposing force sub 20 minutes... awesome. I wish I could have had more time to go through it with you looking for skips. I guess I can always help with mods until I crawl through op4 myself Wink  Someday I'll figure out this trigger delay weapon nonsense... and I will find a way to skip rocket launch. I will take that 45 seconds back hehehe

Scripts are used to make repetitive button presses more consistent. The same result could theoretically be achieved by binding jump to mousewheel and spinning it repeatedly.

Again, it said at the top, if you don't appreciate runs with scripts, then don't bother posting. No offense, but SDA has already been through the discussion, and scripts were banned. That's why this run wasn't submitted to SDA, it was just posted on the forums so that those who are interested can watch it if they desire. No need to hate on someone else's work just because you don't like the way it was completed, just don't watch it.

I enjoyed the part near the end in the warehouse. Teleporting around, contact nade boosting to the top of the boxes and machine gun boosting over everything.

Also liked stopping the elevator with the tripmine, object boosting through the wall and beating Freeman to the portal among other things.

Um, no. This run is using plenty more than just turbo scripts. From what I understood, there's even a script that does two 180 degree turns in the same frame to allow machine gun boosting without visible 180 degree turns.

I agree with the sentiment of the rest of your post, though.

Awesome, I look forward to watching the commentary. Perhaps a small request, if I may. Could you in your video explain why "this" trick specifically require "that kind" of script (bhop, warp, ...) and cannot be done in a scriptless run (purely out of curiosity). For example, if my memory serves me right, at the very beginning of the run there is a helicopter wreckage and in the scripted run you run right through the electricity without taking significant damage, whereas in the scriptless run you cut off the electricity first.
Of course if you already have recorded the commentary just ignore that. And get well soon Wink

Maybe I could add something about the script usage in the commentary. But the electricity at the helicopter has nothing to do with any script. It's only about pure luck. Maybe you wasn't aware that the scriptless run also was single-segment?  I simply didn't want to risk it.

Yea going for the electricity skip in a single segment could be a beating haha, it's all luck. I guess the only good thing about it is that it's so close to the beginning, if you had the patience you could do it. Imagine if the vort jump in half-life instantly killed you 75% of the time and you had to keep replaying the intro of the game... eek.
