http://www.hl2dq.net was going to do this as a group effort but pretty much no one was interested/responding due to nerfing of many tricks and anti-speed implementation Valve has put in it compared to the original.

So I will do a solo run of it unless they come out of the shadows Wink  I've found many shortcuts I didn't think would be possible my first time through, and have a few theories on others.  I thought it would be a hassle with having Alyx follow you everywhere, but she teleports to you every time a new map loads and for a lot of important triggers that she is required for, so we rarely have to worry about her.  Only when we skip large hordes of enemies, she sometimes dies behind which counts as a death to you, so it's best to get to the next map load ASAP.

What's gone:
Flying
Gravity gun jumping on many objects, still works on others

What still works:
Gravity gun jumping on certain objects.
Wallclimbing, but a new method (much like flying, but you have to press the use key as well as jump to keep the object from falling, only works against walls)
Bunny Hopping to insane speeds
impact jumping (running really fast and launching off slanted terrain)
Orb Jumping
Explosion jumping
Teleporting NPCs
Others I probably forgot.

All those tricks are still there, but they have overdone it with invisible walls and triggers/sequences needed to advance.  Many of them CAN be done but are useless. Example: at the very beginning of the game you can get over all the debris and get over the gap that dog throws the van over without the van, but you can't get into the glass.  even if you do with noclip, you die when not in the van.  So you just have to listen to the story like normal.

Another thing is "unimportant" objects can't be carried between map loads (I've found stuff like the explosive mines can be with the gravity gun, but large pieces of metal to gravity gun jump on just disappear).  I can only think of one place where this affects a trick at the moment, which would save about 30 seconds.  In spots they think we would have used an object to our advantage, there is no object to be found. :/

I've still found some interesting tricks, but it won't be quite as good as HL2DQ.

He's asking if anyone is going to before the game was even released.  This is an organized thread to record progress and gather information.

I think I have a shortcut in the Hospital. But I'm not quite sure yet on how it could be done. But I'll try (I want my name in the credits :P) it later today.

Damn. I wish you Good Luck.
A shame that I can't run "the core" in this run.

You should try to do a solo run as well, it's nice to have a little competition Cheesy  I feel bad, but really it's not worth it to have 3-4 people for a group run IMO.
Hilf Mir
I'll help you guys.
I've already run through the game 7-8 times (each time faster than before).
I think we could do it in about 1 hour (though my record is still 1.5 hours)
I'll post demos of paths that I feel are ready for speedrun.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Try cutting that time in half, then your on the right track.

I've been playing this game like mad and constantly looking for shortcuts, havent really found anything useful yet but i will keep trying. Actually, near the end of the game when you fight the strider i managed to grav jump over the fence and bypassed all the containers, got to Alex but for some reason the strider never appeared and alex just stood there and wouldnt move, so my game was SOL.:( Still though, there are way too many invisible walls in this game like the one where Alex protects you with the rifle i tried jumping over that wall, no luck, no matter how high i was able to jump.

I've found a bunch of shortcuts and made demos.  They were uploaded on yousendit so it all expired and I'm trying to put them on filefront now.  In the core, there are some good jump shortcuts that DemonStrate and InsaneB4st4rd found.  I'll try to gather them up and post.

Alternate path halfway through c17_01 - http://files.filefront.com/c17_01_altdem/;5131113;;/fileinfo.html
Citadel_03 route.  There's a faster way to execute, but this gives you an idea of what to do with orb jumping and such - http://files.filefront.com/Chomp_citadel_03_route_oldrar/;5135359;;/fileinfo.html
c17_02b shortcut, saves a bunch of time, skips crowbar - http://files.filefront.com/chomp_c17_02b_shortcutrar/;5129543;;/fileinfo.html
C17_06, final map shortcuts - http://files.filefront.com/chomp_c17_06rar/;5131419;;/fileinfo.html

Ok here are 2 demos:

http://files.filefront.com/Ep1_core_and_hospitalrar/;5135523;;/fileinfo.html

I put the new orbjump route and a hospital demo which is confusing without what I write here:
Ok for the Hospital:
When you enter that room all holes in the ceiling are blocked by invisible walls. Only the first one you fall through is open on the other side (it's impossible to stay on the upper level when you fall down!). I think it's possible to fly up there and skip the complete room.
I almost made it once with an ammo crate from the Zombie fight before but it sure as hell is damn hard.

Maybe it's not even worth it, because of the difficulty.
Steam updated the game as I was launching it to watch the dems, and now they won't play  Sad  'Update News' claims it's innocent but they musta done something.  Anyone else have this problem?

It's ok because there were some recording bugs and NPCs were twitching like crazy.  I may just start recording demos.   I've gone through the game normally twice, and spent considerable time on every individual map.

Edit:  Old demos still play fine for me.
I've bought the game yesterday and played it through once, planning to do a second time in the next few days, but it really doesn't seem anywhere near speedrun friendly as the original. It'd probably be very focused on the teleporting glitch throughout, with shortcuts here and there. It's true that needing alyx to trigger the end of certain levels totally kills off cool shortcuts, and that's a shame.

However, i'm still looking forward to see how fast this game can be beaten in. Good luck with it. Wink

Actually even teleporting won't be used much.  On the first map it will.  Then throughout the citadel there's nowhere to get objects that you can hold with 'use', and like I said objects can't be carried between maps even if we found something small to work.  And Alyx is on a follow script, not a sequence script so teleporting doesn't work that much on her.  Places where it would be used like before you get the crowbar and such, can be completely skipped which is good.  I can't think of many places off the top of my head.

I cant get those demos to work with any of my players, even VLC. Any suggestions?

You need a legit copy of EP1, put it in your episodic folder in your installed steam directory, and type "playdemo demo_name" in console.  Will not play in a media player.

OK the DEM file plays fine but for some reason it wont play the RAR files. Oh well dont worry about it, I dont want to waste your time here.
.
.rar files are compressed archives. You need WinRAR to decompress them.

It's such an innocent statement that I have to laugh out loud Smiley Yeah, as the other poster said, you need to decompress those Smiley

You can find current progress and routes here.

I also wrote an email to Valve about a few issues I was kind of curious about. You can find the questions and answers here.
