"to keep the fraps files small you should turn every on low and record on 640x480"

Lowering the screen size would make the files smaller (by 36% or so), *but* lowering the image quality would do basically nothing.
Fraps doesn't do anything more than grab whatever frames are being displayed, and write them to disk. Increased image quality doesn't make a difference, since on-screen there's still those 640*480 pixels to write. However, it *will* increase frame-rate to drop the image quality, which actually makes it take up *more* space.
I actually have some first-hand experience of this:
In my Infernal Machine run I can run at either 32-bit colour depth, or 16-bit. In 16-bit, the 4-gig file-size limit kicks in at 3:30 minutes, while at 32-bit it kicks in at 4:00, because the decrease in framerate from better image quality also decreases how much data there is, even though there's *twice* as much colour information.

So, in short: Lowering image quality won't help you filesize-wise.
I already know that =)

Well, Cortez was the one who thought so. And when I see some bad advice being bandied about, I bandy back!
Pure reflex.
I'd recommend having the res at 640 and using full size. You should consider that having it at 800 and half size will increase the amount of processing required (larger image to capture, then the resize on top of that) and potentially slow the game, but reduce the eventual file size and I/O strain to the HDD. I'm not sure that SDA would be happy with a res like 400x300 considering.

Then again, if the file size is a real problem, go with whatever.

Here iam again re-living this topic. I started playing this old game again since GTA 4 totally sucks (and my bro took hes 360 now so whatever).
Anyway, what im for again is to speedrun it. I said before SS but I tihnked and really its no 100% guarantee that my PC will hold up an like 6hr FRAPS recording. So I started thinking maybe a 7 seggmented run or sumthing (1st : Los Santos to Badlands) (2st :Badlands to San Fierro + Desert til Flight scool) (3st : Flight school [me has pr0blemz with it]), (4st Las venturas to Los Santos [including a home in the hills]), (5st Los Santos missions) (6st Territories) (7st LAST MISSION).
What you guys think?
And I found a new problem too, recently I did a quality test, I recorded 4 mins that turned up 700 MB and I only got a 40 gb hdd so I rly gotta fix that <me needs help>

Time to Kick Ass and Chew Bumble Gum
well you can do it but i fall asleep due to energy and boredness from restarting..... you need to write down everything you are going ot because chances are you will forget something important.

Edit. GTA 4 is good but in a differ way....not arcade style. Try saints row 2
torch slug since 2006
Saints row sucks too, I tryed it on my bros friend 360...
About the run:
I also think I will need to write-down the order im gonna do stuff since the first seg will be like 1:30 or sumthing I guess...
But my biggest trouble atm is file-size, I rly gotta find a way to make the videos smaller....

i would say the same. 40 gb are nothing for such a long run
torch slug since 2006
Well, I might be able to borrow my friends 250gb hdd
Time to Kick Ass and Chew Bumble Gum
well i guess you have no other choice then...
Just wanted to drop in and say that iam having my run on resting because of PC problems (and my friend hasent find he's hdd yet so..). My pc probz are that it freezez randomly so im gonna play some Far cry 2 and Guitar heor aerosmith then im gonna change back to my geforce 4 that dosent freeze. I also updated my pc again :
Old specs :
1 gb ram
intel celeron 2.5ghz

new specs :
1.8gb ram
intel pentium 4 2.8ghz

So it might lag less now. Okay see ya. I post vids when i got the hdd and my old gfx card!!

sorry but i must revive this thread.

i've been thinking of doing many things with SA lately

100%
any% SS
any% Segmented

And im thinking of the last alternative, cause im gonna try doing a misstake free segmented any% run to try to beat/or not to beat CannibalK9s run. But its gonna be hard, cause : ... well no mistakes!
im gonna start doing attempts soon on it.

Thanks. It will probaly not come up today (Saturday) or Sunday. Monday maybe, tuesday possible.

okay heres segment 1 : http://tinyurl.com/nf839

im uploading the segments to youtube, i dont have the fraps video left so i cant submit i think? i think you need fraps movies to submit.
so yea. Please also read the video info on youtube, i put some info there you might be intrested of.
Next segment willl be damn long so it'll have 1 to 4 misstakes (if im unlucky). but it'll sorts out when the segment is long (im thinking 1 or 2 hours).

edit : im gonna re-do seg 1 til i get sports car.

May I advise you to get a bike instead? It shouldn't be too hard to find a fcr-900 or a police bike during "sweet and kendl", and imo they're a lot more useful than cars. Up to you though.
Well, it seems a speedrun of SA is what gets me to finally log in again... If you're already a few seconds faster, that's always good... hmm... uh... do audio commentary, because that is the best part of CannibalK9's run,  mmmmmm, his voice.
torch slug since 2006
Well its not a good idea for me to do audio commentary since I live in sweden and I sucks at speaking english.
So no audio commentary problay.

And now im back, yesterday (sunday) i was  on a road trip at my cousins house so I wasnt home very mouch.

Now im back and I'm probaly gonnna do some attempts soon. And I think i might take a bike cause I can use the "lean forward glitch" to go faster.
Expert Donkey Fister
tried to get a car spawning by using a replay? im sure it works in vc and sa too
torch slug since 2006
Might give it a try. Im also sorry for not getting up anything this week but i been busy and this will take time this run before i get inspiration / will to do this.

Okay, Im'a doing a double-post here to revive the thread.
Today, I tried doing Los Santos Single-segment.
Basicly, I started by doing a NEW GAME, and I saved in Angel pine.
This took me 1h 46m (game timer).
Although, I died once (sweets girl, lol i know), and i failed Wrong side of the track once.
I also was kinda safe, I took some hamburgers and body armor and some ammo to the micro-smg in the begining.
So yeah.. I am actually considering doing this game Single-segmented some time in the future (dont hope too mouch though).
Im now planning to do badlands in 1 segment, San fierro in 1, and so on...

Heres picture of the MISC stats:

TinyPic Link

And I uploaded the stats.html to a free hosting site:

http://lambdan.comxa.com/

The safe house visit is after the first mission (when you have to go in your house)

EDIT: Im actually planinng to redo los santos, while recording, if there is interest.. I will need a good site to upload it on also, YouTube is not working so good for me. Although I have an directors account there, so it shouldnt be a problem. maybe Google video? Or, do you know a better one? nvm, cant record on san andreas with win7 and fraps 3.0.1.. it lags too mouch
Hey, if you can fix the lag somehow, I'd be interested in seeing this recorded. I thought CannibalK9's run was excellent with very little mistakes or bad routes, so if your aim is to beat that I wish you good luck. Not sure why you would do the entire Los Santos area in one segment though. 1:46 is about 15 minutes slower than CannibalK9 at that point.

Also, Google Video doesn't accept new uploads. Vimeo is a pretty good host in case you manage to record something.
