This thread is dedicated to speedrunning of the first Grand Theft Auto game and actually is the first thread for this game it seems.
Well, these are the best known times, feel free to take up the challenge!!
Note: This game is running with frame limiter on at 23fps... because otherwise the cars are uncontrollable. Some of them are already much too fast...

Thread title:
There's already an old thread: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/grand_theft_auto_original_game.html

I searched that thread for existing run attempts and found these:
* Level 1:
* Level 2:

Also, a few tricks exist that make completion much faster:
* 999999999$ glitch:
* putting lots of cars next to each other and making them explode in a chain reaction (-> lots of $)
* multipliers
* At least one level doesn't have the level exit initially blocked so it's possible to finish that level without getting the required amount of $

Strange that I completely missed that topic, I used the search function and also searched for speedruns on youtube... well guess I failed hard.

About the tricks:
* this one I remember since you posted it in the gta2 thread, but I couldn´t figure out how to do it in LC
* that trick I missed, it makes the game also boring, but if that´s the fastest way of completing the game, I will go for it from now on
* I looked at multipliers since they are also in GTA2, but with the strat I chose it didn´t yield any benefit getting that
* erm... what, lol? So what do I have to do then, just walking to the marker from start? Sounds like a frame war... if more people would compete
* why don´t you make a speedrun, you obviously know a whole lot about this game? Grin

About the categories suggested from the other topic... at least to me, any% and 100% make sense, all other are more like fun categories and made up which I wouldn´t consider serious. Seperate any% to glitched and non glitched would make sense, but unfortunately in some levels blowing up cars is the fastest way... which is not a glitch and therefore seperating in two different categories sounds unreasonable for this game. 100% would include all missions + secrets aka Kill Frenzies which would definetely be the most interesting category for this game.

So my goal from now on is setting the fastest times for all levels in any%... means using the score, exit glitches and blowing up cars....

Update: First level done, let´s break that game!!!

It was difficult to find, I only found it because i remembered it being there.

IIRC it was done in one of the SA levels. There was a video but I couldn't find it.

Knowledge != speedrun skills, unfortunately.

I love the glitches in the GTA games and speedruns are cool too.
Found some time to do attempts again. Tequila Slammer in 00:11.83 which beats Luc´s 17 seconds!

Level 2 done, it went from 3:10 to 2:52 to 2:47 to 2:28.

I can do a 2:1x or maybe even 2:0x, but it´s getting boring and I want to complete this game as soon as possible since it doesn´t offer that much in any%. Undecided Hopefully the 999999999$ glitch is faster than parking cars in the third level, then there will be at least a bit more variety.
Hmm... Did you also test parking some of the cars "horizontally" instead of "vertically" if you hijack ones that were facing towards the west.

You'd make an excellent valet! Or maybe not. I'm not sure.
Maybe obvious but you can do the 999999999$ glitch without flamethrower / rocket launcher (i.e. machinegun or even pistol). Either use a follow-up explosion to destroy the cop car or abuse another bug: if a cop leaves his car to go after you and you enter his car and exit it right away he will no longer be after you (so he'll get back to his car to drive off) = you can shoot his car now without him exiting his car.

My current strat is getting the rocket launcher and a fast vehicle so I can stop the police car and shoot it, I have an attempt with 1:49 but I´m not happy with it. Didn´t know about the police exit glitch though. But how can i make the glitch work without the rocket launcher if I need something to make a flame appear on the edge for it to work? Also do you know other places where the glitch could be done, I didn´t find yet.

I doesn´t really matter, only little thought is that if I align the cars horizontally I would be closer to the exit point which should safe 2 seconds or something.
Wow, San Andreas - "Tequilla Slammer" was gorgious! How could the developers forget to block the level's exit?
Is it possible to beat San Andreas - "Mandarin Mayhem", Vice City - "Bent Cop Blues" and Vice City - "Rasta Blasta" in just a few minutes too?
Also, do you guys think, using the multiplier car explosions should be considered large-skip glitches? I personally would say no, since this game is made as a free open world game where the only goal is to get enough money, no matter how you do that.

Yes, it is possible everywhere! Also I don´t really think the exploding cars can be considered a glitch since the developers intended the score to exponentionally increase if a group of cars is blown up. It´s just their poor envision which hindered them to lock the score at a lower score... Grin There is still the 100% category if someone doesn´t like any%, heh.

That being said, here is level 4 done in 1:29! I had bad luck with traffic when i drove to the exit point, but still is an ok run. Now two levels to go with parking again...

A question about the framerate: Is the framerate limiter set at 23fps from begin on or did you decide 23fps to be appropriate?

The game limits the fps to 23 fps. I tried to play at 30 fps, but the cars were too fast, I mean they are already damn fast at 23 fps.

Darn.. you're right. Of course you still need the rocket launcher.

Nice SA run. Yet 2 optimization ideas:

* You don't need to head back so far from the wall before firing the rocket. If you shoot right against the wall when falling down (and thus killing yourself) remaining time before respawn should be way enough for getting enough score. You still need to aim for the right piece of wall to shoot against, though.
* If you get the cop after you before you reach that place you might be able to use the police exit glitch to place the car in a suitable position yourself without having to push it there

I thought exactly the same about firing the rocket immediately but the problem would be I seem to always spawn at the wrong side of the hospital and that wouldn´t safe me any time unfortunately. About the cop car hmm... the time I will wait till he is away from the car + run to his car enter and exit it and wait till he enter it again will probably compensate the time for pushing it, so it´s hard to tell + it´s harder to execute. Maybe in a perfect execution it would be faster if I might lure the cop car to the edge but it´s unlikely I think.
Bent Cop Blues finished in 2:49. The same parking "action" but with a bit of a safe strat which is shooting the cars so that the passenger exits it himself, so I don´t get wanted level. Problem was the cops in Vice City are annoying and tend to destroy runs. Tried also different things for the death warp at the start like getting run over, didn´t find a way and getting to the nearest machine gun was 2-3 seconds slower.

I made a small mistake by going to the left instead of right where the escape car would be closer. Also the only way to get the points multiply consistently seems if I park the cars vertically in this level at least, otherwise I had trouble and the best way was 3x5(three rows) but not 4x4 which didn´t work out for me. One level to go. Tongue
defying gravity
Nice to finally see this (almost) done. Especially nice that the police car glitch actually was useful in one of the missions. Go sub 12 minutes Smiley
I bet also the last level will be a straightforward one. Did you check the other levels for insta-exit glitches such as the one in "Tequila Slammer"?

Also, in case you want to attempt 100%, I've written a decompiler for those totally unreadable mission files. Also, what counts as 100%? One special thing about GTA 1 is that even when a mission is failed the game will still progress, just that that mission won't give a multiplier (or bonus). Do missions have to be won or would it be enough to just put the game into a state where it offers no more missions before leaving the map?

(Reminder to self: check car door glitch)

Yes, I checked all the other levels, it´s only in the 4th. The last level is a bit annoying though since i have to fail the opening mission by destroying the red car which is on the other side of the city, because otherwise the red arrow won´t show up and I can´t finish the level, despite me standing in the right spot.

I´m not planning to run 100%, but I guess the requirements are completing the missions and finding the secrets aka kill frenzies, since you have x/x missions and x/x secrets displayed after finishing a level. I am not sure what you mean by "game will still progress if you fail a mission", if you fail one it won´t count that you completed the mission at the end. The kill frenzies are different though. At the end it states "Secrets found" so it actually just means finding secrets not necessarily passing them which means for 100% it would be technically enough to just start them, which sucks but thats what the developers chose for this game. In comparison to gta2 there it states frenzies passed and you actually need to complete a frenzy.
Just tested the car door glitch in "Mandarin Mayhem" for getting to the goal faster. Did not work unfortunately, the trigger seems to be completely off.

This glitch permits one to get through fences and doors. You do that by parking a car so that the car door overlaps the fence/door, if you exit the car you'll end up on the other side (and can re-enter the car from there). You need to find a suitable vehicle first, it does not work with all of them, the door has to overlap, e.g. in San Andreas this works with fire trucks and other long vehicles. Didn't find suitable vehicles in Liberty City though so I did not test it. Also I now doubt that it is of any use (= permits glitching into a working exit area early).
Here is the last level in 3:12, finally done with this game! I parked one vehicle too much because I thought the bike won´t count, still ok this run. My previous strat was parking them on the main road but there I would need to shoot more vehicles because of cops and it would actually waste more time in the end and the scores didn´t multiply as I wanted.

Summary of this short adventure:
LC1: 01:43.52
LC2: 02:28.70
SA1: 01:29.91
SA2: 00:11.83
VC1: 02:49.96
VC2: 03:12.43
------------------
SUM: 11:56.35

With more grinding possibly one and a half minute could be cut down still, but I reached my goal and finally set some times fo this game, so time to move on. Tongue
Stalker!
ok now optimize it and submit the run.

Really like this game and your runs. Some really cool and stunning tricks. Great job! Would be nice to have GTA ILs on SDA.
