Yes...that's right.....Grandia Xtreme.

Now I think it is quite obvious that the run cannot possibly be finished in under 7 hours. In fact, I think that even under 15 hours would be a great time.

I'm thinking that magic is the way to go for a speedrun. Basically, the goal is to get lots of magic eggs as soon as possible as early as possible. Junction them and get powerful eggs very early on and have enough MP on them to last the boss fights. The Aqua ruins geopoint will be abused for this purpose since it takes less than 30 seconds to teleport in, get an egg, and teleport out. After Aqua ruins, the eggs must have enough MP on them and be powerful enough to take out Quanlee without too much difficulty.

I might try this out. It doesn't seem like it should be too hard early on, but I could be wrong.

B-man had some good info in this ancient Grandia series thread.

That thread is funny for me though. "I've already forgotten a lot about G3. I figured I ought to get this down before I forget most everything in another couple months." Indeed, it all looks like gibberish right now. Tongue

I still think the best SDA run candidate for this series is "none," followed closely by "possibly 3."

I did half of a speedrun plan for Grandia II, but it's just so... ah, I probably already mentioned this in the other thread.

I would not watch 12 hours of Grandia, and I love the series. I don't know a thing about Xtreme though.
Yeah. I guess so. Grandia games just aren't really...speedrunable. Xtreme is also the least popular of all of the Grandia games.

For those of you that don't know, Xtreme is very different from the other Grandias. It is a dugeon-crawler, the game has only 1 save point, and you usually have to play for an hour or more before you can save. Gamespot gave it a 6.2/10, probably due to the presence of multiple annoying factors within the game. The battle system is considered the best of any Grandia game though and the story is considered the worst.

I might do this, but then again I've started many speedruns in the past and have finished none of them.  Smiley

Uh, game reviews are basically universally awful, don't even try to begin taking them seriously.

G3's system is pretty much X's exactly + aerial combos, so I would say G3's is slightly better (plus the game being the hardest in the series is the biggest improvement). X is a dungeon crawler, so why even care about the story. Tongue

I would watch 12 hours of Grandia II as long as the quality is a good one Cheesy

Yeah, Game reviews aren't always good. Chrono Cross got a 10/10....I'd have to disagree there. I'd give it an 8/10.

I also have a question. Does anyone know the elemental weaknesses of the bosses from Grandia Xtreme? There don't seem to be any gamefaqs guides with that information. Obviously, The Flame ruins boss is weak against ice. Thanks to anyone who has something to share.
100% runs=great to watch
Count me as another who'd watch a well done run of a Grandia game---even if it wound up on the long side.  8)
I just finished a casual runthrough of Grandia Xtreme in 20:26 (after all the ending cutscenes). I was at Lv.35 with Evann before fighting Quanlee. This technically was bot a speedrun but, I now believe that sub 15:00 (probably even better) is definitely possible.
I think a party of Evann, Jaid, Myam, and... (whoever has the next best magic stat) would be a good party for a speedrun.

Is there a way to make Volt Beast use Metamorphosis early in the battle so that I can damage him with magic?
God is the ultimate prankster. You can't top him.
I actually just lately got this Grandia, (and though it disappointed me at first), it brought me the same impossibly long and close-calls of boss battles that I loved from Grandia II.

I would LOVE to see this, even if it were 15 hours. I would be seriously impressed at anyone that could go through the game and fight only required fights. After all, low-level boss fights are my absolute favorite part of the Grandia series. =D
well, in my 20:26 time, I avoided fights as much as possible but, if I ever got into a battle I would fight and never run (except for the last 5 floors of Evolutionary corridor). I also fought Wind Mantis 5 extra times (this will not be done in a real speedrun DEFINITELY). Avoiding regular battles can be very difficult because, some enemies jump out of nowhere and attack you. Another problem is the Starry corridor as well as the evolutionary corridor. The randomly generated levels make it quite difficult to optimize a run. Good luck to anyone else who wants to run this because, I have no means of recording it as of right now (other than VHS)

Luck manipulation is a very important part of Xtreme. Getting the right SFs on eggs, getting the right abilities from vellums, getting the right vellum dropped by an enemy, and even canceling at the right time. I hope that I won't have to redo segments 100+ times. lol.

I dunno man. I recorded my final boss fight in G3 at min levels, and it was something like 2 hours long and I said "there's no way anyone would ever want to watch this, even sped up" and deleted it immediately. It might be interesting to play, but to watch is another thing.
100% runs=great to watch
Did you think of me Enhasa?  8)  Very rarely do runs leave themselves unwatchable to me unless I lack the HD space.  Which...can be often but the backlog struggle continues.

But yeah, I THINK a middle ground needs to be found between boss-only and doing encounters---likely there is an equilibrium point betwixt the two whereas boss-only would lean more towards the Challenge Play side of things.

getter, I would think of you if I was doing something now. Wink I had several people tell me they would have liked to see what I deleted, but oh well.

Leveling up takes a relatively high amount of time/effort in Game Arts games so minimalism is still fastest. It's too bad that in GA games, levels play a significant factor in outcome, and they typically have extremely long boss fights too. G3 would maybe be a good run candidate if only the final boss didn't exist. He has a retarded amount of hit points and it's just a drawn-out battle of attrition.

On the flip side, tri-Ace games make it extremely easy to gain levels, while simultaneously extremely deemphasizing the importance of levels (through setups and also play skill). Also, both sides typically slaughter each other, so fights resolve quickly. (Until the end of postgame, where you get slaughtered even more but the bosses also get retarded high HP.) They also nerf item usage by putting in recovery delays and capping inventory space (which mostly nobody else has copied, for reasons I can't figure out), which combats attrition as well. These are all changes, compared to FF which is around RPG average for each of these, that I welcome a great deal.

Short version: I think Grandia's battle system itself is far superior to other traditional RPGs like FF, but I wish they would tweak the numbers. Undecided
The problem of being underleveled is solved in Xtreme by using magic (the animation time isn't that long). Spells like Crackle Fang are amazing, 2k against True Quanlee at lv.35. Also, you gain most of your experience from boss fights so, your level isn't that low. Also, Victory Roar works well the entire game. I was able to damage True Quanlee with around 1.5k per X-slash at lv.35. Of course, the boss battles will still be long relative to other rpgs.
