I think I'm gonna go buy that game again, but should I do it on the PS2 or the dreamcast? I like the Dreamcast one more because (in spite of all the fandom) I hate the PS2 controller with a passion. How molded to not fit your hands it was.... Plus I love the dreamcast controller and was one of the Dreamcast lovers who defended it till the end... (ie.. sword of the berserk, bangai-o, Dead or Alive 2, Shenmue, etc...)
but honestly, does anyone know of the version differences?
Thread title:
Ride on shooting star
I think PS2 changed the graphics for the worse, but I can't remember.

I also can't really see a speed run of this game.  Long RPGs != a good speed run, although I never beat the entire game (only got to the tongue-guy's dungeon).

Its not really that long, and XP is easy to get. Plus certain special attacks and recovery stations make it easy to level. If you paralyze the final dude w/ millenia then its even easier. only tough part is surviving that final gauntlet of battles. Though I made it harder on myself when I went through by not using items. even then it was easy and that was my first time through.
once I beat it 2 or 3 more times I can start looking for optimizations and then after that I can attempt to speedrun it
Forward standard-by-ten .
Don't get the PS2 version.  It has CRAZYBAD slowdown issues.
Hello there Miss Kitty.
If you do anything with Grandia 2 please do it on the Dreamcast. The PS2 port is downright terrible, with constant framerate problems and just plain graphics errors. It's worse in pretty much every aspect.
Zelda Scientist®
Yeah I wasn't sure but I always do prefer the dreamcast port over the PS2. But thanks for the info. SO it was just a port? no new options though? That's cool since I played it on dreamcast before anyways.

The game has some elements that can totally make it beatable in shorter amounts of time. Such as POWERFUL spells, cancels to avoid damage (especially important if you're at low levels), and Battle initiative which makes it so you can own crap faster.
plus you can tack on extra hits for your combo.
And need I mention the sky dragon slash.
Special coins are the only problem. I'm gonna have to use them very wisely if I want to minimize battles.
Even more so with my MC.

note*: last time I played it I only used Roan for cancels because he was so dang weak. Is that a good idea since you lose him for a bit anyways?

for most the game I pretty much lived off of the zap! attack. or SP moves

only time I beat it was at lvl 90 or so...
I'll aim for much less. It'll have to be a low level run. At least low enough to where I don't compromise speed. As for saves, not sure. Though I should probably go for a single segment.

What will you do if millenia goes berserk?
I always had that in the wrong places, and if she then casts Fallen Wings you can kiss your MP goodbye (really annoying if you have some minor random encounter that lands one single hit on millenia and she decides to level the entire chapter...)
the typical response to rpgs is that they are too long for speedrunning, but certain rpgs, the ones in which you can choose your battles, are fine. By that I mean, you can actually see the enemies on the field (no random battles) and you can run around them. the runs are particularly nice cause it makes them sort of a low-level challenge at the same time.

examples of games like this include mario rpg and paper mario. In grandia you can also see your enemies on the field.
Zelda Scientist®
In response to the millenia going crazy... you have to constantly pay attention to her mood. It is displayed on the screen and if you keep her from getting Po'ed then she won't do that. I'm just not exactly sure what triggers her getting PO'ed other than taking damage, and what makes her calm down. It's been like 4 or 5 months since I beat Grandia 2 so I'm going to have to go back and test that out. Right now I'm gonna go find some FAQs to see if I can get the answers to some of those questions.

Question: Does anyone know of any major time savers for that game other than skipping battles and fighting at a low level?
I would be much oblidged.

I just put a copy of the Dreamcast version on hold and will pick it up on wednesday if all goes well. (along w/ yoshi's story ^_^ )

yeah I know I'm gonna need to have the healing sp technique from the main chick and
beast king blast
quake
sky dragon slash
zap
white apocalypse

those are pretty important.
plus I'm gonna need tons of IP and also am gonna need ways to keep crappy weapons for a while. Since I won't have that much cash I'm gonna need it later on, so I can't just constantly buy new weapons.

I'm sure there are ways to stop millenia from freaking out, though I don't know if a single hit would do it.
In my first time through it didn't really bother me at all because the restoring places were always so close all the time. Note: in my first run I wasn't going for speed so I fought pretty much all the battles I came across, and I found that camping the restore points can be very nice if you want quick levels in an area where you know you can get mad kills because an SP or magic attack that you have hits everyone in the fight and kills in one to two casts. This will be single segment however, so there won't be any kill, save, respawn bull crap. (though it was fun). I am almost certain that at certain points I may need to camp a restore point for a few minutes to level up... hopefully I won't need that, but if I need the cash or SP coins then I'm sure the extra level won't hurt.

question: what's the lowest level any of you have beaten the game at? I'd love to know what's possible, that way I can aim to get even lower, provided that it doesn't INCREASE the length of the run. I will not sacrifice time in order to have the lowest level win. It will have to be an all out (my first) pure speedrun.
Zelda Scientist®
Question for Radix:
I'm sure it won't happen, but If I'm on say, a 6hr VHS and it reaches max and stops recording, is it okay to pause the game and swap tapes?
otherwise I might have to go buy a 10hr or something IDK

None, sorry...

Let me get this straight..... 7hrs single segmented?
Or do you mean straight through the game without extra level building?

I didn't have trouble beating the last guy (meaning I finished him off on first try), but it was a very close fight. I played the game pretty normally and was around lv50.... in fact I think it was exactly 50 (Ryudo a few lvl higher). It was around that game that I started wondering why I got to the final boss around lv50 in every single rpg...

yep, that game is pretty parallel and there isn't much room for skipping areas, but then again... there are always tricks to be found for that areas that you're in.

thanks. Yeah, I think I like the idea of a single segment better, though a multi-segmented run would be MUCH easier and would help take away some of that randomness crap. But, I might go segmented, IDK.
Lvl. 50 huh... you still beat him pretty easily?
cool. Maybe 30 is possible.
yeah my closest fight was back when I was a kid and first got SMRPG. I got to the volcano and had to fight the Axem rangers... fought ... one axem ranger left... no items left... no FP... noone left alive except geno... geno's HP=2... 1 last attack... 1 KILL!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, IDK, no offense to anyone who does segmented runs, all the power to you, but in an RPG it just seems like a compensation for lack of absolute skill... while I have maybe average skill in Grandia2 (will change)
I just don't know if it takes away from the power of the run.
<Warning: the question below contains high doses of nubian content. Pros beware>

nub question, seeing as how I didn't use items... Those feather items cost alot of cash and are harder to come by... do their IP boosting effects last forever or just the battle?
same w/ the other nut items, do they have a lasting effect either?
${$uid.$user}{' usertext'}
you said you already did one test game... how did that go?
deaths? levels? time?

I forget the level, I think I was above 50 ... I think I remember 90 but that isn't certain... I'm having a hard time remembering whether I was 90 or was trying to reach 90 before the end of the game, so my memory is kind of cloudy. I can tell you once I pick up a copy of grandia 2 on wednesday and then load my old files to see. I didn't die at all, except when you fight melfice that one time in the castle. so I guess I died once... I can't remember the time, that I will also see again once I get the cds. I borrowed it from a friend so once he took it back after I finished, that was all I played. I can update you with that info in good time however. thanks.
I'm betting I was at 12+ hours, but I did fight nearly every fight I ran into, and more. plus I didn't use items.
gonna have to work hard if I even want to think sub 7...but we'll see. I wasn't really trying to beat it quickly, but just to level build and explore the game.

I got it. I immediately started doing a quick segmented run through the game (unrecorded) to learn it all again.
on looking back... my time for beating it was terrible. I was only level 53 for everyone except Roan who was at 52. And my time was 36 hours!!!
Well, needless to say I was shocked. anyways, at this point in time, I am stuck and requesting advice. I am going MUCH MUCH FASTER than before. and am at:
4:25:38 on the Eye of Valmar.
pretty fast if I say so myself. Though I am stuck.
I will inform you on my stats in a bit, gotta go to class first. I'll probably post my condition at around 11:00

TOO BAD 80% OF THAT GAME IS TALKING!

location:Boss fight, the eye of Valmar in Aria's Space.

note: This will definitely be a segmented run! the eye bosses are beasts!!!!! I looked at my old time and WOW!!! ummm... it was casual play + leveling... I was lvl 53 w/ everyone except roan who was only lvl 52. I had a time of... brace yourselves... 36 hours! crap. well I was at 18 hours at castle cyrum and if I keep up my current pace, I should be able to get there by the 5 1/2 hour mark hopefully. but, this is getting much, much harder. lets hope its only those eye bats that are giving me trouble. I actually don't think I could improve on my time so far by more that oh, 16 minutes. So optimally, I'm not seeing this game getting beaten in 7 hrs... but, maybe 9 to 12. It's so weak, 80 percent of my current 4 and a half hours is either talking or cutscenes. WOW! If that is the case and Radix won't take it, then I'll just have to slap it onto some other site like archives.org. At the current rate, I might have to go leveling a bit... maybe for 2 or 3 levels, just to get the stats and the special coins... don't know, I think it would make the game go faster because I will make up for the time in the future. Don't know, I'm open towards your opinions though.

Stats
Note: I believe Ryudo starts at lvl 10 as well as Elena. Mareg starts at 16 and Roan starts at ...umm 11, I believe. I have not battled anyone except those who need to be killed. All encounters (rare) are ran away from. I am extremely under leveled and haven't bought anything except for a total of 5 wound salves from the store, for 120 gold. I used them already... I still have a save though that is in the town, so I can go back to purchase if I absolutely need to... Apparently when elena switches to millenia, you gain a level every once in a while, otherwise she'd probably be a good level or 2 below ryudo... Any ideas, I'm being pounded by this boss... namely the 4 eyeball bats. I'm using burnflame and Zap!, beast king blast, flying tenseiken, and healer/heal. I'm always eating that Delta burst attack... aaaahhhh! If I go back to the store save file I could stock up on Morgay bombs and new weapons and armor. and healing items too. note: morgay bomb = 300+ damage - attack range = some enemies and damage enemy IP
note: 12000 (main bosses HP) divided by 350 (mogay bomb damage) = approx. 34 (# of bombs to kill). 34 times 250 = 8500 (money needed) my money= 11000+

Edited (Apr 12 @ 12:08)

I just bought some mogay bombs and I think I have a new strat to beat that section. I buy like 30 of them, and then I have Ryudo use flying tenseiken slashes on 1 eyeball. while millenia uses zap on them for like 300-450, and Roan and Mareg use mogay bombs. The goal is this, if I kill 1 eyeball, then they can't use the Delta Burst attack, then it just comes down to healing correctly and using mogay bombs until the match is over. I'll keep trying to get past that part now.
Your in for a world of hurt if you've never tried playing through at low levels.  Just for fun I played through on low levels since due to the battle system it makes it a lot more fun than playing most RPGs at low levels.

The eye boss will mess you up, course once you finish him you've got the paralyze spell which is a godsend.
hehe, guess I should've read through the post before repying.  Looks like you found out the hard way.
Zelda Scientist®
Yeah, thanks, but I still have't pulled off a win though... which is lame. I boosted my books so that I have 2 HP ones to equip to Ryudo and Millenia. after that I Bought like 30 more bombs and basically have to keep replaying until I can kill one eyeball and then heal like mad. I can get really close, but sometimes I forget to check to see who will attack who, heal the wrong person and get screwed. Oh, and did I mention that I don't want to use any reviving items in this battle? Its tough.
