KING OF THE DOVES
I've played through the game on normal and hard modes, and now I'm playing through on god mode. I've done one other god mode run, and got all the way to the room before Pandora's Box, but couldn't get past that conveyor/fire room (and then I accidently deleted my saves!). Since stage one is my favorite, I've already run it several times to see what's my best time, which turned out to be 13:46, but I forgot to do the sex minigame for the orbs, so a few seconds should be added for that. I thought sub-14 was impossible, but I surprised myself. It does require the Hyrdas to cooperate though... especially the second Hydra Spawn. If he doesn't try to eat you at least 3 times (so Kratos can counter and deal a large amount of damage), and quickly, then forget getting sub-14.

An effective route is also needed; since you won't be killing every enemy, descisions of what chests to open factor in. I've found that Medusa's Gaze is quite useful in not only killing many enemies quickly (if they're lined up right), but also give you more orbs as you get a bonus when you shatter them. Leveling it to level 2 for the Gorgon Flash hasn't seemed worth it in god mode though. My general idea is to death bounce as many enemies as possible (kills mini-taurs the quickest - not counting Medusa's Gaze for groups), and to collect all the Gorgon Eyes/Pheonix Feathers as possible to max my health and magic. Because of how convoluted some Eyes/Feathers are to get, that may change since this is a speed run...

Since red orbs are at a premium, I'm wondering if leveling anything besides the Blades of Chaos is a good idea, assuming I even have enough for that. The "sacrifice four Cenetaurs" in the Challenge of Hades was made so much easier in god mode by a level two Poseidon's Rage. And the Kratos clones were much easier with a maxed Army of Hades and the level two Poseidon's Rage. Getting the Muse Keys is also a great boon, and I would definitly use them... Leveling up the Blades of Chaos lets you kill stuff faster, so I believe that it's faster to do a bit extra to level them up. Level 3's Hades Reverse and to a lesser extent (at least I think so) level 5's chain sweep move (square+square(hold)) let the battles be much easier and move on quicker, especially in the Kratos clone battle...

As for Challenge of the Gods, I'm not so interested in... maybe someone else would step up to talk about that one~

Even on God mode the first stage is relatively easy. When I first started doing a speedrun, I was thinking multi-segment God mode and I think I got under 13 minutes for the whole hydra thing.
I'd love to watch a run of this.
KING OF THE DOVES
Under 13 minutes for the first stage? I'd like to see how you got that fast, unless it was becaus the hydras really cooperated with you  Wink Also, were you stopping to grab any Gorgon Eyes? That was something I always did, since at least on that stage, they're not out of the way much at all. Doing a no-health/magic upgrades speed run would be interesting though too!

The Gorgon Flash I've found most useful aganst Satyrs (the guys with the dual bladed staffs, right?) and Cenetaurs for speed. Also, as a Mini-taur is spawning (climbing out of the ground with the black smoke and stuff), if you press and hold triangle, you seem to always pop them up into the air ready for a death bounce. After they finish spawning they are immune to this (at least, in a one-hit capacity). The later Mini-taurs with the large axes that are hard to pop into the air were the ones that were falling victim to this, and were the ones it was most useful. The earlier Mini-taurs can be popped into the air at any time as long as the (press and hold) triangle strike is not blocked. Large groups of Undead Soldiers are quickly felled by getting one stunned so you can throw him, then use the square button throw to throw him into his friends. Sometimes you can stun another this way and repeat this process a few times. Quick and fun! Sometimes though, a Gorgon flash or two is even quicker~

Well, I ran past everything I could...I don't think I got any extra items such as gorgon eyes. I do know that I used the technique I saw in the demonstration dvd with the final boss.

If you time it just right you can hit him with poseidons rage right when he chomps down on you. Before he even has time to move you then start attacking again and then do poseidons rage again when he tries to chomp down. This strategy works really well. Of course, I could've been doing this on mortal, but I don't remember.
KING OF THE DOVES
I use that strategy, but I didn't know the game shows you how when all those screens are playing during the credits. A 25-hit combo is what I result in, when I watch the ending again I'll see exactly what he does.

I'm on Ares now in god mode (and he demands perfection), but I noticed a really slow part in Hades: when you have to kill the Lava Satyrs to make the platforms rise (one for each killed, 8 total I think), it was very slow. Trying to Gorgon Flash them is hard because they're constantly moving. I think a good strategy would be to do various Hercules moves on them (square+triangle+..., or just triangle+...) until they both are popped into the air (so they'll take awhile to get up). Hopefully you can manuver around to Gorgon Flash them both, but either way, they take 2-3 flashes, then shatter it quickly. My way was to just pound away with Hercules moves, and it took too long.

Having a full magic bar is almost better than a full health bar, and I have new respect for Medusa's Head, an item I ignored in all my previous playthroughs. Leveling it to level 3 doesn't seem to be useful though; the Satyrs still took 2-3 blasts to turn to stone, and the Gorgon's Rage (360 degree instant turn-to-stone) takes all of your magic to use. At least Gorgon Flash is able to turn to stone 2 or 3 large enemies before needing to refuel your magic.

I bought the strategy guide after I beat the game and they show how to get big combos. But, now I've been able to get over a 1000 hit combo, so it's no big deal...you just have to have the cow outfit.

Here's a question...since we're still going with the QDQ style of speedruns where you either do it in the hardest difficulty or the easiest...should we consider normal to be the lowest setting or go with mortal? Cause I could always do the easiest setting. Grin Going through the game on God mode...I got halfway through pandora. I still have my save file...but I know it would take a long time to get through it.
KING OF THE DOVES
Maybe I should get the strategy guide too, maybe it would say some stuff I haven't thought of yet~

Personally, I'd say to go through it on normal difficulty. However, if you're wanting to do it the FASTEST you can possibly do it, easy would be be the choice since the enemies die faster. This is especially noticable with bosses. On my god mode run, the Armored Minatour boss was quite long, and I was trying my best to get some speed practice in by using my magic and most damaging combos.

BTW, my strategy for the room right before Pandora's Box was to skip straight to the far side, cast Army of Hades, let them hit up the Harpies so they don't do their metor attack (which is extremely dangerous for such a weak enemy), and start beating the archers down. Once the first cast of Army of Hades wears off, use it again soon, and continue on the archers. Once at least two of the spawn points stop spawning archers (I think you need to kill 3 at one spot), retreat to the longest conveyor belt, the one where you entered. Then, just start doing PoP (Plume) or Hercules moves, and bash up the harpies. Hitting a harpy weakly is better than not at all because as long as they're getting hit, it seems to reset their timer. When that timer goes off, they do their metor attack, and if you ever see that fire-y target start to follow you around, immeditaly stop attacking and start skipping (roll then hit R1, repeat). In God mode, just one of those takes a huge chunk of life off.

Also, I read about a glitch to get infinite red orbs on GameFAQs message board. You can go read it yourself for the specifics, but it involves killing a harpy on a ladder so it  bounces up up the ladder, and proceeds to keep bouncing... indefinitly. All the while, it's dropping red orbs. While tempting, this would not be allowed for SDA, right~  Tongue Wink
MGS for PS1 forever.
Glitches are allowed. If they weren't there is no way a person could beat Mario 64 with only 16 stars. I think I will go ahead and do a speedrun on Mortal. If I get done mine first I don't have to pay anyone. Grin
KING OF THE DOVES
I don't want any money for this, it's just for fun  Smiley

I won't use the glitch though, I'm planning on finding enough orbs along the way. Also, I never really noticed, but Ares gives you a massve horde or red orbs when you beat the first battle with him. The only problem with that is having to use them to upgrade every attempt I do since I can't save the upgrades until the Ares is dead.

My plan is most if not all health upgrades, definitly all magic upgrades, level 5 Blades of Chaos, level 2 Medusa's Head, minimum level 2 Army of Hades, and hopefully at least level 2 Poseidon's Rage.
Level 5 Blades of Chaos give you inifite magic while in Rage of the Gods mode, which I found a requirement to have any chance in the Kratos clone battle. Medusa's Head is a gimme since the Gorgon Flash makes many battles faster. Army of Hades is great against Ares and the Kratos clones. Poseidon's Rage is a great skill, but I just hope to have enough orbs to go around~

I did finally do it though, I beat god mode! Now to start the speed run  Grin
hooray for not being greedy, Radix and Prism!  Grin

KING OF THE DOVES
Gof of War is so fun to watch that sometimes I die just because of the how cool I pulled off a combo or counter. I'm very good at countering Ares in the first battle, so watching that should be pretty fun to watch.

*One horizontal swipe with his ax*
Hades Reverse w/square!
*Immeditally after, vertical strike with his ax*
Hades Reverse w/triangle-WHAM!

BTW, how were you going to do the whole health/magic upgrades and items upgrades for your easy run? Any upgrades to health would probably be a waste since you'll be able to take more hits than I can with a fully upgraded bar on god mode  Cheesy

Also, if anyone has any sugestions about killing those Lava Satyrs to raise the platforms in Hades, I'd be all ears. And remember those rotating pillars in Hades? They'll get their own segment~

EDIT: What's really funny about the constant countering of Ares is he occasionally says "You're no warrior!!", but you're totally kicking his ass~
MGS for PS1 forever.
When it comes to the pillars...just don't rush it. My friend who is great at shooting in a game so he's always better at Ratchet and Clank, can't navigate simple platforming stuff if his life depended on it. Well, he couldn't get up like five feet without getting hit.

If you have to stay in one place for a few seconds, that's ok...and if you have to backtrack because you suddenly realize you won't make it...that's ok too.
KING OF THE DOVES
I know how to get past the rotating spike pillars, but I'd rather just do one segment for that. I plan on making each segment cover just one level, and I consider levels to be it says the next area as you enter it, like "The Road to Athens" or "Rings of Pandora". Of course, Pandora's Temple is quite large and you move around a few times to new areas without it changing it's title, but I'll see what I'll do when I get there.

So far, the Aegean Sea to the save point below deck of Kratos' ship took me 13:57. That'll be good enough, I just wanted sub-14 minutes. I've ran it like ten times now, not to mention the runs where I wasn't recording. Once I start recording, I suddenly find myself unable to be as speedy as if I wasn't recording... oh well, I'll get used to it~
MGS for PS1 forever.
Glad to hear that. I must've done the 12 minute run on mortal. Oh well. One of the only reasons why I've put this run off is because of the rings of pandora and the cliffs of madness. Even though the rings of pandora is practically half the game, they do feel as though it's an actual place...because you keep coming back to the same rooms. I told a friend of mine that it's like Zephon's cathedral in Soul Reaver. It's a puzzle within a puzzle within a puzzle.

Since you plan on getting alot health container you could just go ahead and get all of them. I know you don't have a strategy guide, but I could tell you where the others are at.
KING OF THE DOVES
Thanks for the offer, but GameFAQs has a Chest Guide that I'm looking over for each segment to determine what is where. Also, I plan on getting the guide at some point anyway~

A good strategy I found against the first Hydra Spawn battle:
He has two attacks, both of which are bites. One is a quick two bites that don't push you back very far. The second is a bite, then a short delay, then another bite. This attack pushes you back further. Since you are further, you have more time to start your attack, so when he bites you like that, start hitting square over and over. When Kratos whips the blades upwards, his next attack with square will be his dual chain whip that knocks enemies back. Instead, hit triangle, and he'll do his Hercules finisher move, which does more damage. Because you've been knocked back, you should have enough time to do all the neccesary square moves and then subsitute the Hercules move as the finisher. When the Hydra does the two quick bites, you don't have enough time to do all this...

Also, my 13:57 is a bit sloppy in two areas: fighting the Harpies before the second Hydra Spawn busts through the floor, and fighting the two Hydra Spawns at once before the giant Hydra boss. I'm not sure if it's faster to rip the wings off the Harpies (hit circle), or to do combos on them (which hits multipule Harpies at once). I chose the latter, and maybe I should have gone the other way. My problem with the two Hydra Spawns at once battle was I used my magic immeditally, which didn't result in the Hydras giving me back blue orbs. You have to use magic when they try to bite you, and you'll then leech blue orbs. This left me in an awkward position when the final Hydra Spawn was in a loop of "Bite-Bite-Bite-Bite" with me unable to deal enough damage because of the lack of time for a proper combo (PoP). Still, it's better than the other runs I've recorded, but not better than the ones I didn't~

Just in case you didn't know...during the Hades part of Pandora's Temple...when you are way up high and trying to avoid spikes...you can jump from the very beginning over to about the halfway point or so. This would save you about 30 seconds...a friend of mine pointed this out.
Fastest time I've done for this game is 3:15 or so, but that included upgrading the BoC enough so I had unlimited magic for Ares.

Couple of tips: (Spartan mode)

Hydra section is pretty simple, 13-14 minutes max.

Athens is straight forward, the sewers can get a little tricky.

The desert sucks, just remember to thrust and roll, concentrate on the Sirens.

Pandora's Box...when you're underwater, charge all the time. It takes 1.5 seconds and you can launch just before the animation completes itself.

Minotaur fight: Poseidon FTW, you get most of the magic back anyway.

The cliffs. you can ignore some enmies up here, but again, this is pretty straight forward. If you wait 5 seconds before stepping on the pedestal that opens architect's room, you'll have a clear path.

Hades. Risky jumps can pay off or kill you. With the jumps, you're looking at 7-9 minutes. Without them, 10-15.

Final Battle Part 2 - Rage (gods + Poseidon) FTW, last part, just lock Ares in a sword duel twice, that should do it.
KING OF THE DOVES
I'm already collecting red orbs when they're not out of the way, as I don't know how to beat the Kratos clones without unlimited magic when in Rage of the Gods mode.

3:15 is nice though! I wonder how much longer I'll be given the enemies have more life (or Kratos is weaker, whatever~). I'm going to try to get Medusa's Gaze up to level 2 by the time I reach the desert so I can hopefully Gorgon Flash the Sirens to stone and shatter them before their dual Mini-taur body guards get to me. I know it sped up the part where you fight three Sirens at a time.

The entire Ares and clones fights are such a luck of the draw thing... With practice I hope to make my rate of success high, fast, and look cool.

I had some difficulty with my encodes, but apparently I need to use two-pass encoding, so once that's done, and I've got the next segment down, I'll record that too. The next segment will include the docking at Athens, fighting Medusa, and meeting the Oracle the first time (when she's a hologram or something). The save point will the the one that is overlooking Ares' wreaking havoc in the city.
KING OF THE DOVES
I'm at the Road to Athens, with a time of 29 minutes and 30-something seconds. With my encoding issues solved by using DivX 5.2 instead of 4.12, I'm ready to keep going.

I found a neat trick to use during The Gates of Athens: when you're climbing the wall to get around the gate to tip over the statue, at the very last gap you have to jump over, purposely jump the gap into an enemy. You won't make it, and fall straight down, right to where you want to be. This is much, much faster than climbing down since Kratos moves pretty quickly in all directions other than down (using X to do his wall-hop anyway).
KING OF THE DOVES
I've done four segments now, with a time around 45 minutes at the save point above Athens Townsquare right before the stairs going up leading to the Oracle's temple.

I found a good way to get red orbs: Stone Harpies. It's easy, quick, and you get 30+ red orbs each time you do it. When an enemy is stoned in air, they fall down and instantly crumble when they hit the ground, giving you a "+30 Ruined" bonus. I understand this is common knowledge to many, but is new to me. It makes any gathering of Harpies better than most anything else in terms of red orbs. The Oracle's Temple is one such place, and with three chests in the area to refill your magic meter, several bars of red orbs are the result.

Some bad news is that I start school again in a few days, which will impact my ability to play God of War. It may be awhile, but I intend to stick with it. It's fair warning for me to say that I may not be able to make any progress beyond a few segments though, so don't wait up~
KING OF THE DOVES
I've completed 6 segments now, and I'm currently right at the top facing the Pandora Temple, with a time of 1:04:54.

The desert Sirens caused me some problems, but I did it as quick as I could. The part where you have to find them in the sandstorm by following their song is hard because I don't have a stereo TV. They do appear in the same approximate spot anywaythough. Gorgon Flash followed by a quick swipe is great for the 3-on-1 Siren battle, but when you're breaking their backs to open up the little shrine, it doesn't seem to work. They break out of stone almost instantly after being stoned. I guess the game's designers wanted you to kill them a certain way.

My health is as maxed as it can be without using the Muse Keys (which is inside Pandora Temple), and my magic is upgraded once with another upgrade coming up soon. Level 3 Blades of Chaos (I can finally parry->reverse now, yay), and level 2 Medusa's Gaze (for Gorgon Flash). I think Poseidon Rage will be next, followed by the Blades of Chaos.

School starts this week, so I want to do at least one more segment very soon before then!
