Su-Pah-Hu-Man! (#2-Run Refuser)
Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place of the forum for a casual gaming question.  Move it where you need to if you need to.

I was playing through a casual gameplay session of Chrono Trigger and got to the Denodoro Mts. to the save point just before dropping down the ladder you can't go back up again.  When I got to the Masamune fight, I noticed that in battle when I went to use an item, there were NONE there (and no "invisible" items I could select).  After having one party member drop and in need of a revive, I quick-reset the game and found that my items had been missing since that last save point.  I could use them on the map just fine, but once in a battle, nothing was there.

Luckily, the rest of the enemies through Masamune were managable without item use, but then when I tried to fight subsequent battles, still no items in battle.  The other weird thing is that once Tata gave me the Hero Medal and I went to Frog to talk to him about it, he didn't even recognize that I had it and want it back.  He just stayed there and refused to join the party after multiple talkings-tos, but the Hero Medal is STILL IN MY INVENTORY!

What the heck is going on?  Is this a glitch that is known but I don't know about, or is this brand new?  No gamefaqs cover something this specific, so I'm thinking this community would be the only place on the planet that would know what this is and possibly what to do about it.

Again, sorry if this is beneath the interests of your speedruns.  I watch AGDQ/SGDQ all the time and have become completely addicted to them off and on.  Any help would be great.

EDIT:

Ok, I just realized the Frog thing has nothing to do with the glitch since he does not ask for the Hero Medal the first time you bring it to him (I was following the Phoenix 1911 gamefaq which makes it SEEM like you give it to him then, and it's been awhile since I've played this game regular or seen this part on the AGDQ run that zips right by the text).  Still though, something happened with the buttons possibly on the Denodoro Mts., so I figure someone here would know about those controls since the misplaced equipment glitch is caused by pressing two at the same time or something like that.

The only reason I'm playing through the game on my 3rd save spot is to see if I can get through the rest of the game to New Game + without ever using items during battle, and I don't want to simply restart at this point (though it would be quicker) if I can possibly discover a way to fix whatever happened here.

I'm wondering if getting items back on the Blackbird can bring it back WITH my items, or if it's not going to happen because it's simply a "failed function" of some type.  It doesn't happen with the previous save at the Melinnial fair where I spent 10.5 hours getting $626,000 with the soda guzzling game and auto-fire-A.

Beat the Blackbird.  Getting the items back didn't give back the ability to use items during battle back.

Next step is getting New Game + back on that game file, having no use of items through the rest of the game for Omen+Lavos, and seeing if things go back to normal when I start a new game, with or without the +.

If anyone has seen this glitch before or knows the cause, let me know.
Are you playing on a console or through emulator? If emulator, you might be able to find someone who can analyse the save file over at TASVideos.org if anywhere. Just see who's been TASing it...

Sounds like it's just a non-beneficial bug. Walkthroughs don't list all possible glitched states, so...

You posted this on the right forum, but it's not the most frequented. If you want to refer the followers of the Chrono speedrunning thread (under older consoles) to this, I'm sure they'll check it out.

It seems strange that bsnes of all emulators would be doing this. So a few things come to mind:

1) are there any IPS files in the same directory as the rom/folder? I don't recall if bsnes does soft-patching, but it's wise to check.
2) are there any cheats enabled?
3) are you sure this is a clean dump of the rom?

You can move this to the right place if you want.  I'll find it and then know where to go in the future.  Looks bleak around here.  But I assume that's because most people spend their time running, not posting.

It's on the emulator BSNES v.0.6.8 for my Mac OS 10.5.8 (which is now old and most flash players and web browsers and stuff have a hard time working with).  Plus, for some reason BSNES has 3 icons you can open up to play, either (accuracy), (performance), or (compatibility) and the only one that doesn't lag is "(compatibility)", so I use that one.

As for the 3 questions, I don't know what an IPS file is, there are no cheats enabled, and I don't know what the difference is between clean and non-clean dumps of the rom.  I got it in a .rar package of ALL the SNES games, but only opened the few that I had and intended to play.  This is not the original one I played years ago on my old mac in the early 2000's when I first found out about the game.

I beat Lavos on that file without using items, got the new game plus, then went to the fair on a game to fight Gato, and I could use my items again during battle.  So it looks like there's something particular about the specific save file that happened during the Denodoro Mts. that I already saved on without realizing.  The only safe way to have done it would have been to use 2 save spots and alternate each save during the game between the two so that if I lose item use ability and find out after I've saved, I can go right back to the save BEFORE that one, and not have saved over it when I could still use them.  But then again, that uses 2 save spots.  So I'm wondering if any CT runners know what causes this glitch so I can avoid it.

I think it might have something to do with pressing two buttons at the same time.  Same thing happened recently in my console NHL 99 game with the line change box where I pressed 2 C-buttons and the box stayed out there all period long and every time I went to press the check/speed button, it selected line 3 and the box wouldn't go away nor would it STOP taking my every C-down press as a line 3 selection at the same time.
I'm willing to be what you're experiencing isn't very common and could well have connections with your specific setup, but if you're still apprehensive, you could also post the same stuff on the BSNES forums. Although seeing as your version isn't even closely the latest, they might just give you a shrug and tell you to patch it.

An IPS file is this.

You can tell if it's a clean dump by comparing file sizes with other copies of the same ROM file and see if they match. I should imagine.

Anyway...

Where the heck are the BSNES forums?  Are we talking about this forum in a place I can't easily see or a different place on the web altogether?

I've since upgraded my operating system to OS 10.9 but haven't touched the BSNES because I wasn't aware that something newer might be available, and I'm still thinking that the newest versions might be for a version above even what I have now (which I can't upgrade to).  Right now, my priority with emulation is getting the best version of N64 that can work with my new OS so that I can play NHL 99 for stunt practice on the biggest screen size my computer will take.

As for the CT glitch, I went through a New Game Plus and made it to and past the Mts. without the glitch happening again.  Also, it seems to be built into only the original save files where that game happened or was saved from, so as soon as they're deleted, it's probably history.

I haven't bothered to figure other places to download the same game yet to compare file sizes, so I don't know if it's that.  I think it had something to do with mixing up the buttons trying to switch to Lucca and then her fire attacks too quickly to take the hammers out of the Goblins' hands.  Even in New Game + it was a tendency I couldn't hold back on getting carried away with, this time wanting fights to not take forever to get through.

What the heck are you talking about???

I'm not sure what I was looking at, I don't really know anything about BSNES in particular, I only ever used ZSNES and SNES9x but I see you're on a mac... I only replied because no-one else had.

Also calm down a bit.

I'm not sure that anyone on speed demos archive currently runs chrono trigger, so I am not sure that anyone here can answer your question. You could try asking on speedrun.com here, or you could try asking old runners directly. The guy on speedrun.com posted a speedrun 1 day ago so he should be active.

I speedrun Chrono Trigger, and have never seen or heard of this glitch before.  My hunch is that it's some kind of save file corruption, and was likely caused by your emulator rather than the game itself.

hmm.... I see a this one-liner from me... I see simple email.  Methinks I detect a little bit of guilt over your simple oversight.

Ultimately, I see no big deal.

Meh, it's ok.  Thanks for the links but it's low priority now.  I figure it's an emulator problem.  This thing is delayed as it is, though not important too much on an RPG game as it would be on say, a beat-um up or sports game where you need pinpoint timing.  So I'm looking for a new emulator that will solve that problem and I heard Macs don't have much options for gaming.  BSNES is advertised as the most accurate SNES simulation for Mac, so if it's not that, then I guess it's nothing as long as I have this computer and that's it.

Yep.  I can hear your voice in my mind as I read the post.  Heard it often enough on the AGDQ runs.  So I guess that's it then.  Gotta make sure I go to my items at least once during battle between save points to make sure I can still do it.  Thanks.
