what about a mod where you could race a quake-guy ghost from another demo??

goal is simple: beat the ghost runner to the exit of any chosen level.

load a map, load the corresponding demo (say, the fastest run ever), and the quake-guy data will be loaded so you actually see an etheral one running the map but not interacting with the surrounding environment (no explosion sprites or killing enemies, just him flying about).

racing a slower ghost wouldn't be the best way to go.

everything is exactly the same, just that there's an extra person running around.

Haha that would be fun indeed, I actually thought of this idea myself yesterday!! Would be good on long maps.

We shall have to slap Jozsef until he implements this  Grin I remember this exact thing was available on Super Mario Kart on snes, and it was great fun.

Ps. You can use demix to blend runners from two demos together into one demo, but I know, I know, this wasn't what we wanted. Give us realtime, Joe!  Cheesy
lolz, mario kart inspired this idea, in fact!

demix also inspired it as well after watchin dotg (apparently the recam was made from 40+ single player demos, dude!).

i thought it'd be more fun to actually see your challenge than just a time to beat. i rekcon it'd keep you on your toes and awake, even after endless restarts.
something like that would be great fun, only problem is that the 'ghost' would look funny because of all the interactions with the enviroment, plus all the random monster movements/etc.

It would still be cool for a challenge though, even if the ghost shoots at nothing/walks through doors/etc.

can it be done? i've got no idea about the programming challenges....

Well, yeah, I was assuming you'd just show the player from a .dem file.  You could try to show all the monsters, etc from the .dem as well, but that might be a little confusing Smiley

I'm sure you could do it reasonably easily as an engine hack.  It's might be possible from QuakeC, but I don't know a lot about that.

i thought of that, but it shouldn't be a problem if the ghost could just do it's thing without the game registering it as a real time entity.

it's wierd cause it's really only a small addition when you look at the big picture; simple yet complex idea.

i was assuming the runner knew what the ghost was doing and what was going on when the actual player was recording the demo.
