Hi, i've been following the site for a while & watched demos and this has inspired me to try quake again (i used to have the N64 version, ehehe), but i'm pretty unsure as to where to start, being the Quake rookie that I am. My questions are:

1) Do I need to buy anything, or should i be able to play with just the WinQuake or JoeQuake downloads?

2) If it is the case that i can play it just from the downloads, do I need to d/l maps or anything else?

Sorry if these questions have been answered before, but i'm a bit stumped at the minute  :-/. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,

Adam Durkacz

I'm addicted to games
You'll need to download the quake shareware, then joequake, and then you can play any of the custom maps. Can't play the registered levels though. (e2m1-e4m8)

Actually, last time I gave this very answer it struck me only seconds later, that if you have the shareware version, you still cannot play any map that features monsters such as the hellknight, fish, or vore since these come in pak1.pak, making the shareware solution an unsatisfactory one.
