@topic: I've talked to a good friend, who is working for a gaming online magazine (http://joystickjunky.at/) and he said he could write to Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony and ask for some merchandise and prizes for the marathon.
Get over here!

Stop right there! No involving Nintendo! I and everyone else don't want this event to be shutdown while it's still in development Sad

Please clear me up, what is the problem with Nintendo?
Do they have problems with their games being used for charity events because of copyrights etc?

I have potential connections to Konami and Sega, as well as MS, and might also be able to nab some things from them, I hope! Smiley

First off, that was Nintendo of America, not Nintendo of Europe. Second, that mishap with Smash @ EVO was reversed within hours of it becoming public knowledge. But yes, let's rave on about that brainfart by that one PR guy for years to come, because we don't have enough drama as it is.
Hey,

I'm from Germany and also interested in a meet-up in Vienna. I'm not sure I could make it next year if it happens, but I like the idea in general.
I've been to Vienna two years ago and I really liked it there.

Best regards
Lucas

Been sleeping (a lot) over the question when it would be best. Conclusion: Either have it well before Christmas (November, not December), or have it after the New Year. That then breaks down into two possibilities: Before AGDQ (might be not much time) or well after (more towards carneval?) Carneval is pretty early (mid-February) next year, so that might be a viable option.
Yeah, conflicting schedule with AGDQ (and pre-AGDQ fundraising streams) is also a concern of mine.
FFXIII and Mario Games, yup.
I would probably be interested in joining such an event. Date-wise I'd suggest late November or after AGDQ. (Late January '15, Early February '15)
If I have the time and money to travel down to Vienna, I definitely would be interested.
I'm attending university so it's kinda hard for me both time-wise and money-wise but you never know I guess Tongue

Before AGDQ is not really a good idea, as RedArremer mentioned with all the AGDQ hype and the pre-AGDQ fundraising streams it would draw a lot of attention away from this.
Mid to late February might be a good option.

Alright, today I've been talking to the head of the venue I've mentioned, and he's absolutely in favor of hosting a marathon there. Which means that it's basically guaranteed I will be able to host an event! I'll be trying to keep you guys updated as things go along in that regard.

In the meantime, we should probably settle on a date. Currently, I'm in favor of February 2015, but I also could do it earlier (even as early as autumn this year if that is preferred). Of course, there is going to be a venue/entry fee in order to pay the rent this will take, but it won't be too much, I hope, especially if many people can attend. Smiley

I'm not sure if I'll be able to arrange sleeping at the venue, but as mentioned, I should be able to hook you up with a youth hostel. I also am going to look for actual hotels (in case there's people who prefer more comfort and don't mind the increased price).

I'll open an official (but still informal) thread where you can offer runs you'd want to do in the next few days, as well as the charity I've chosen to raise money for.

Please tell every European speedrunner you know (at least enough to bug them) about this event. I will reach out to some of the more popular European runners myself and hope to get them to support this event as well (and perhaps even attend).

Thank you all for the support and the interest. I'm really hoping to get a great event off the ground! Smiley
