i'm curious to see examples of where it's been tried before. it seems like a lot of people have had bad experiences with something like this. i'll admit that i don't get out much.
Haters gonna hate
Really the best test for something like this would be just a general shoutbox.  The Nifflas forums have one of those, but traffic there is generally light so I don't think it's the best example out there, but if a shoutbox gets stupid and spammy here then it'd definitely be detrimental to the forum to make a wholesale switch.

As long as I'm posting, might as well chime in to say I'm against this idea.  As far as video game forums go this place has a fairly mature air to it and I think this would damage that.  We have the IRC channel, keep the chatty stuff there and leave the forums as they are.

what if there were a way to keep a less "chatty" atmosphere?
