So, the potential Mantalith phase skip is easy to do. Just hit the head when it's descending from the first jump.
However, these extra jumps and attacks it does before going up for the next phase waste a lot of time.

How do I make Mantalith skip these extra attacks? I've done this a few times, but I don't know the timing and positioning required for it.

Milla's done.

Call Guinness, there will never be a perler cuter than that.

Avoid damaging the head while mantalith is jumping/just-landing.

Damage Boosting perfectly sends Milla significantly farther up. This might be useful somewhere in the run.

I found an amusing backup strat in RM

Hey guys. Followed SGDQ quite a bit in the past, I'm really enamoured with this game and I'm totally down for trying some beginner speedrunning with it. Never really tried this sort of thing before, so I just figured I'd say hi and that I'm interested, will see how it goes Smiley

Hey. Cool beans.
If you wanna see what the current times are, or what to do to get them, we've got a leaderboard here: http://bombch.us/wAw/ (Use the tabs on the bottom to go between characters)
There's also the Knowledge Base for general stuff (though it's woefully incomplete right now), or you can read through all of this thread.
Other than that, feel free to hit us up on steam and ask questions.
Always nice to see another person running FP; gl hf, dude.
Thanks man, nice to meet you!

EDIT:
Fellow by the name of Metalli found a slight improvement to the very start of JC

The second one doesn't save much time, and might be too risky to be used in runs.

The SDA Knowledge Base for Lilac has received a major update.  Videos will be added eventually to provide examples of some things, and a list of videos will be appended at the bottom for IL route tutorials.

https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Freedom_Planet/Lilac
So completely new to actually trying to actually speedrun anything myself instead of just watching. I assume it would be best to just start with only one stage and expand once I get that one to a consistent enough state that I am happy with?
Viking it up
Use the videos for the top stage times on the leaderboard for now: bombch.us/wAw

I plan to make video tutorials for Lilac soon.  We're also always available to ask questions.  I would personally start learning stages quickly, get the most important time-saving strategies, and leave the really difficult stuff for later.  Here are some starting times to shoot for in each stage, as well as a few of the most important strategies:

Dragon Valley 3:20 - invincibility divekick, boost up to boulder switch
Relic Maze 4:50 - starting high gap boost, stair zip, train claw skip, Mantalith left side strategy
Fortune Night 4:30 - bulldozer wrongwarp, zipline consistency
Sky Battalion 4:40 - Metal Ship miniboss kill, Fire Ship boost in helix platform room, Earth Ship miniboss wallclimb strategy, controlling Peacock rubberbanding
Jade Creek 4:20 - keeping water speed on second screen, dandelion boost into ceiling cyclone fly, basic Neera pattern (it's okay if she gets shields), submarine dash, final cyclone jump, consistent uppercuts on Chopper
Thermal Base 5:00 - first zip (http://s14.postimg.org/etl792yld/tbzipguide.png), second zip, Syntax miniboss, water level switch skip, avoiding stomper deaths
Pangu Lagoon 3:40 - consistently crossing gaps without falling, crossing block puzzle above large hive, reaching final door switch, Holo Dragon fast kill
Battle Glacier 6:30 - knowledge of backups, rocket drill accuracy, Absolution jump manipulation, earth shield boost, last set of drills, basic Dail strategy
Final Dreadnought 1 2:30 - first pylon boost cue, familiarity with warp destination order, Syntax fight boosts
Final Dreadnought 2 3:00 - Keycard squid fight, end of first screen ascent, second shield drop manipulation, zip cue, Giga Serpentine manipulation
Final Dreadnought 3 2:30 - proper hallway route, Milla boost positions
Final Dreadnought 4 3:20 - knowledge of first climb block cycles, zip cue, knowledge of laser climb geography and how far you can afford to go on each cycle, Absolution opening strategy, Mech Brevon uppercuts and taking intentional damage, Final Brevon strategy up through boost up the wall

The easiest stages to begin on are Dragon Valley, Final Dreadnought 1, and Final Dreadnought 3.  Pangu Lagoon will make you good at boosting, Battle Glacier is the hardest and longest and warrants at least a first look once you've gotten comfortable with Lilac's moveset, and Thermal Base and Final Dreadnought 4 have some of the most demanding tricks that save large amounts of time.  Mantalith, Spade, Peacock, Neera Li, Molten Syntax, Dail 2, Giga Serpentine, and Final Brevon are the bosses that will give you the most trouble.

I may have just found a wrongwarp in Jade Creek, but I have no way to record at SGDQ.

I was an idiot and forgot where I was in the stage.
Good luck tomarrow! Wish I could watch it live but I got work. I hope you both do great.
Great race guys.
That was amazing. Fantastic play, guys! Awesome.
I'm not too sure mylexsi, you may want to watch the vod again, but I think you miiiiggghhhttt actually have gotten around half a second to a second less than the sgdq timer time. Really hard to say but that's what it looked like!

Just saw you guys race at SGDQ! That was an awesome race!
I donated to say "hi" to you and wish a good luck, but unfortunatelly, didn't get my donation read. Oh, well! Smiley

I'm really happy to see Freedom Planet made it to GDQ!
You're not here.
Yeah, you guys did pretty great by the game. Excellent work!
