I wanted to know what everybody thought about the marathon as a whole and the experience as a whole. I know it isn't over and there are several runs that I am really looking forward to seeing, but my live experience unfortunately came to a premature end. My school starts tomorrow morning at 9AM, and I'm barely functioning to even stay up to write this out as this absolutely wrecked my sleep schedule (sleeping from 12PM-5PM, then 5PM-9M the next day? sounds good) and I will be struggling to stay awake tomorrow and nearly fell asleep at the wheel about 50 times on the way to my hotel room here, but to be honest if I knew what an experience this would be I'd have just dropped out of school to stay the extra few days. I didn't get to watch last years because of internet that couldn't stay connected for 30 seconds so I didn't know exactly what to expect. It just blew my mind to witness such great gaming prowess first hand and to meet all of the incredible people that keep this site alive.

Speaking of the people, as someone with severe social anxiety I was extremely nervous traveling across the country to stay with 50 people I've never actually met but everyone was friendly and awesome and it really made the experience. I've just got some things to say to some of the people here:

mikwuyma: Thank you for organizing and keeping up with such an incredible event, as well as helping me get my room figured out when I was so tired I couldn't walk straight.

nate and Lag.com: I didn't get to meet either of you but I'm extremely grateful that we could have people like you two to do the tech work to keep the marathon running efficiently. Also thanks to everybody else working the marathon computers and commentary: Breakdown, Flip, Arrow, moooh, SMK, stanski... I know there are others and I apologize if I forgot you, but thank you to you all as well.

Essentia: Great Dr. Mario matches and race! I came in really confident but got very worried when you stomped me the first match. I can't wait for the videos to go up so I can get to watch your screen.

tri-hex: Yoshi's Island blew me away. It will always be my favorite game to watch, especially the way that you play the game. Melee matches and everything else was great as well and having someone I knew rooming with me. Hopefully you get the pictures up in a timely manner this year Tongue

Animeowzers: Always I great surprise to find somebody else that shares a mutual love of bad N64 games. Thanks for hanging out at breakfast and being willing to put up with playing Mario Party with me, Trek and Nitrodon, albeit only a 20 turn game.

Trekhaak: Severely disappointed that I did not get to catch your Banjo Kazooie run, so hopefully it went well and I will definitely watch it when the videos go up. I don't know how you stayed up for so long, I went to sleep and I'm still completely drained of all energy.

Nitrodon: I'm glad I found somebody at the airport so I didn't end up having to wait for myself forever, because that would have been really unnerving.

PJ: My life will never be the same after experiencing Lagoon firsthand. I'd love to get that for my brother and make him try it unaware of the horrors he will face. Your Battletoads run was incredible (also credit to Kareshi for creating the atmosphere, the FF4 boss was a great throw-in) even though I have zero prior experience with Battletoads, although Color-a-Dinosaur might have been even more impressive.

Heidman: Had a nice talk while I was practicing for Tony Hawk 2. It's great to see someone else who very obviously takes a lot of pride in there runs and doesn't want to settle for subpar. Also, thanks for offering a ride even though we ended up not needing it.

Kirkq: It was cool getting to work with the one other person who knows what they're doing with Bomberman Hero. I wish I could had those wall-kicks in my run.

PEACHES, Cosmo, Jiano: Good shit with Melee from the three of you, and all of your runs (Blast Corps, Super Monkey Ball, and SM64) were extremely impressive, even though I have never gotten to play Blast Corps personally.

SMK: It sucks that the strategy guide lied about teleport on Venonat, but the run commentary was very entertaining and informative as I had no clue how those glitches actually worked. I'm glad I was able to help you attempt to plan a backup strategy even though it ultimately proved to be unnecessary.

Pootrain: Also had a lot of fun playing Melee, and Trials HD was very cool even though I had never heard of it before watching the run.

Stanski: Thanks a bunch for being willing to take me to the airport when you could have used that time to get yourself some sleep. Sleep was a rare commodity at the marathon.

If there's anyone else I forgot in doing this I apologize. I'm really fucking tired and I need to sleep. I may update this at the end in case there's something else I need to add after experiencing the run on the side of the viewers, but all in all this was an amazing experience and something I would sign up for next year in a heartbeat. Yoshi's Story and Chameleon Twist anyone?

Glad you had a good time, neskamikaze.  While our goal is to raise money (of course), being able to have a good time and take care of each other is just as important too, I think, since we're all friends, right?  Hope to see you again next year.
Visually Appealing
This was/is my first marathon, and I have to say it's been a blast so far. I love watching everything, and actually playing the two games I played was exhilirating. Everyone's super cool. The only thing I regret is not timing out my sleep schedule so that I don't nod off during the shit I want to watch.

Can't wait for next year's.
We all scream for Eyes Cream
I agree with Satoryu. It was nerve racking to play through KH2 but at least Xaldin went the way I hoped for, even though I did a bunch of screw ups and such.
Dark Cloud 2 SS 4:34
It has been an amazing event and i would love to get to know everyone on SDA better you guys and gals are all amazing and keep up the great work.
I completely overslept and missed my first day of school. Should've just stayed. Oh well.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Nothing happens the first day anyway.
1-Up!
It was awesome having you, neskamikaze.  Wish I had more opportunity to talk to you, considering how we both flew from Texas to come here lol.

I'll post my reflections post-marathon.  Having a great time so far!
Yeah I know Flip, me you and Nate representing Texas. I know absolutely nothing about Shake It, though I have watched your run on the site and liked it.

I had a blast as well, everyone was so easy to get along with.

Major shout outs to:

TJP - Possibly the nicest dude I've ever met.
RG2489 - For driving me to and from airport.
Tri Hex - Most insane finger skill I've ever seen.
Cody Miller - Not the Halo fanboy I expected lol, thanks for the MK64 practice.

neskamikaze your puzzle game skills are unmatched.

I think my favorite moment of the entire trip was playing Mario Party 3 with Kirk, Jiano, and Cosmo. I was laughing myself into tears, such a skill based game lol.thumbsup
When were you 4 playing Mario Party 3? I absolutely would have jumped on that.

I'd also like to apologize to cyghfer for butchering his Tetris Attack run. He's one of the only ones who knows how slow that run was.

You've got ability, but it looked like you weren't terribly experienced at the game.  Play the game long enough and you'll be fine.

I hadn't been playing the SNES version for all that long (6 months or so) but I've played Pokemon Puzzle League for around 10 years. I don't have a whole lot of experience speed running the game though and the one I played for the marathon happened to be a really bad run even for me. I've gotten a couple sub-6 runs and several sub-7 runs, which was my goal, but too often I freeze up and mess up on the first chain and then I'm behind for the rest of the level and come up with 1:00+. I don't know, it's a game I really only ran for the purposes of the marathon as I think I would lose my mind trying to record a real run for, but I wish I could have done better on it, or wish either you or cyghfer could have made it and ran the game instead or as a race. Oh well, that's all over with now.
Fucking Weeaboo
Just like to say that I've had a wonderful time here.  While minor things went wrong here and there (and the marathon lasted WAY longer then initially expected) we all banded together and had a good show.  Earning $50k is absolutely incredible!

While I didn't get my wish of being able to do a Kirby Amazing Mirror run while there, I'm glad to see people were willing to be able to do it.

I hope everybody is home or does get home safely and see you all at the next marathon. Smiley
Maybe next marathon we'll get to do that Kirby's Epic Yarn run.
Shoutouts to neskamikaze for destroying us in Puzzle League and playin melee and shit. good times.

to Rane for your SotN race, felt like buying you a drink or something after that. you were a cooler guy than i expected. grats on finishing off the marathon. if you are in a SotN race next year you've got my support

to trihex, great run dude, and nice playing melee with you

ANI!!! haha nice job hovering across the world in wind waker... without pausing WTF? haha god damn. good times, it was nice meeting you in person, and thx for covering me when i forgot my wallet at subway

runnerguy2489: congrats man, probably the most memorable OoT race that has ever gone down. you choked early and I choked late, which made it a really entertaining race. i have no regrets

aleckermit: hahaha mario party 3 oh my god

carc: i enjoyed your runs, sad I missed out on RE though

flicky: nice commentary, you're a funny guy

uyama for hosting this whole thing!! was really fun.

arrow: I enjoyed the katamari singalong lol

funkdoc: you're a cool guy, we should have hung out. next time

stanski: nice sonic2 run and commentary, good job dude

romscout: lol at the mario kart. we live near eachother; maybe you could teach me SotN sometime

...
time to go practice super monkey ball 2 now I guess
Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.
I feel like this needs to go in an aftermath thread, especially since I wasn't even there, but I want to post here anyway...

Thank you so much for another amazing marathon SDA! I watched as much as could with total rapture, and enjoyed talking with so many in the chat. (Sorry if my typing was so bad, I was typing with the entry space just offscreen so I could watch the streams.) So many people I recognized too. Gaming truly knows no bounds, especially with raising over $50,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation!

I have some pictures I should probably post. Photo thread?

Some shoutouts by name:
- Rakuen: Great job moderating out there. Can I help you next time? Good luck with your Final Fantasy V single segment route!
- Arrow and Breakdown: thanks for reading out my donation comments!
- Mike Uyama, for diligently relating the chat to the outer world for us! And great job organizing this!
- nate for setting up a rock solid stream and capture setup!

Thank you once again SDA!

Well, I guess this thread is bound to become the official marathon reflections thread, let the post-marathon posting begin! thumbsup

Needless to say, this marathon was abso-fucking-lutely awesome! Congrats on being able to raise $51K! This completely blew away last years marathon. Hope all those who attended the event had as much running and socializing with their fellow speedrunners as I did watching the whole thing. You guys rock!

Shoutouts go to:

Mike Uyama: Thanks for organizing the whole thing and introducing the now sacred concept of "serious time" and for hilariously mispronouncing my real name. XD

Carcinogen: For going out of his usual cancer-causing habits and making some kickass RE runs. Just don't expect anyone to let you within a 100 foot radius of an RE4 copy ever again (not that you'd want to be around one, anyway).

BioSpark: For reminding Metroid Fusion that you are its lord and master for the nth time.

andrewg: For being yourself. That surpasses most people's natural capabilities already.

Radix: For revisiting your masterwork to see how far it's come (and starting it in the first place).

VorpalEdge: For playing my favorite game of all time better than me Tongue

SMK: For being a total Pokeholic and helping SDA defeat cancer without the need for chemo.

And everyone else who attended the event should consider themselves praised and acknowledged. Again, you guys are awesome, so thanks for putting on such a great show! Here's hoping for an even better marathon next year!

Thanks to all you Guys for this.. yes i have to say it.. EPIC marathon.. i was awake for like 2-3 days straight..

Now its 2am in Germany and its finally time to go to bed

major props to SDA and everyone involved for this massively entertaining marathon. I had gone through a personal disaster right around the time it started, so I'm very grateful to have been able to take my mind off everything and enjoy a ton of my favorite games (and speedrunners.)

favorite moments definitely include trihex and his yoshi's island run. loved the showboating and last second mistakes that were just as impressive. I've always been kind of a wuss with that game, so to see trihex just go for it live was a real treat.

funkdoc is a true classicvania master, really enjoyed his commentary and thorough execution. the SOTN threesome honestly had me in suspense near the end, it would have been huge for Rane to make that final glitch. here's to a throne reclamation next year.

jiano's decimation of SM64, axel's KH2 run (especially that now infamous blindfolded fight) and bayonetta with flicky were all worth the sleep deprivation. bayonetta was probably the most entertaining three hours all marathon for me thanks to flicky and that sussexy accent.

I passed out with an hour to go on essentia's CT run this morning, but I think I'm safe in thinking she knocked out the old run time with ease.

to all other runners and people involved, thanks so much for putting together a wildly successful marathon and exhausting yourselves for the cause, and a huge congrats on the $51k.

get some sleep!

This marathon was simply badass.

Lots of runs were very, very entertaining; I just had to keep watching. I still missed some parts that I really wanted to see like the Actraiser and SoTN races, but I'll check that and other stuff out when the videos are uploaded. The Battletoads race was also great. I was on the edge of my seat when PJ stopped to attempt to kill the rat... and he pulled it off.

I also stayed up that one night to see OoT get torn to pieces. That race was so neck & neck throughout the whole thing, making it very exciting to watch. Then I thought I'd watch some of Jiano's 120 star run before calling it a night. I kept saying "ok, just a few more stars then I'm going to bed", but then he got all 120... it was a stellar performance even with the 2 or so deaths near the end. So many risky looking strats made that look very pro for a live performance!

There's so much more I'd like to mention, but I'd have to say something about pretty much everything I saw, since all of you did pretty great. I almost wish I were good enough at some awesome games to participate one of these years. It looked like everyone had a blast over there!
Takin' care of business
The marathon was nothing short of fantastic. You guys are a really cool bunch of people, and I loved chilling in stream chat with all you other dudes and dudettes. I'm glad you have such a kickass way of lending a hand to a good cause, and I hope that Pokemon Yellow ending isn't far off.

Here's to SDA defeating CANCER for good!
Grats to everyone who participated in the marathon, there's no denying it was a massive success and $50k is crazy and absolutely blows away last year's marathon. Cheesy Was fun watching as well, hope everyone there had fun!
@ Nate: I'm from Texas, too!

I thought you guys did a fantastic job. We beat our goal by 2x. I was really proud of all of you guys that we could raise this much money for prevent cancer foundation. Since I want to go into the medical field and my grandfather died of Lung cancer this topic touches close to home.

Furthermore, I really wish I could have been there running with you guys. I may not be an old SDA member, but I love this place, and it's like a home to me, and everyone here is nice. I may have not been able to make it this year, which is why I'm making plans to go next year.

Congratulations to everyone who ran a game, even if you had to reset a bunch of time or missed your time mark, you are the people who made it possible for this to happen. And of course thanks Mike for organizing everything/reading donation comments.
