Make it so.
Fantastic job Cara, I've enjoyed every minute of watching you stream these segment attempts so I just want to say thanks for the entertainment! And huge props to Nitrodon for being so incredibly informative and helpful in the chat all the time too.
Everything's better with Magitek
Congrats, Caracarn! At the time I did my run, I never would have thought that sub-10 hours would have been possible. I'm sorry I wasn't able to watch very much of your streaming, but I'm glad that my run was able to inspire you to do this run.

And yeah, Nitrodon is a walking FF encyclopedia. Wink
Congrats! I enjoyed your streams a lot, looking forward to your future streams, and THE SS run.
Gimme some sugar Shaggy!
Great job Cara, I watched a bunch of your streaming (since about halfway through Segment 18 I believe) and I was hooked. More addicting than chocolate
Congrats Caracarn. I have been watching since segment 19. Glad you finally did it.
In case you missed it, my segmented run is now on the verification list, so if you want to verify, please contact Flip.

Also, I may be starting up occasional SS attempts again, at least to practice for the Speed Gamers FF marathon next month. http://community.thespeedgamers.com/viewtopic.php?f=87&t=16218

I will also be doing Final Fantasy X-2 at that marathon, which I just set a new record for, and will likely be submitting. http://www.twitch.tv/caracarnvi/b/321334960
Hi guys! I just recently started speed running the International version of this game (New Game Single Segment). I was wondering if any of you knew how much time I need to subtract from my final time to compare it to the NA version. Just to see if I have any hopes of competing with Cara's times Roll Eyes I'd also like to congratulate both Cara and Essentia on their awesome runs!
Thanks!
well, you would think that the PAL version would simply be 16.67% longer than NTSC overall. But unfortunately, it is not that easy. The FMVs still run at NTSC speed on the International version, so you would have to subtract the times of the FMVs from the overall time, convert that time to NTSC, then add back on the FMV times, to get a somewhat accurate comparison.  In any case, they would be separate categories.
This time difference is a real shame, considering the advantages offered by the Expert Sphere Grid. I guess I'll have to wait for someone to do the actual math. In the meantime I'll try to improve my time as much as possible. Thanks for the fast reply, Caracarn.
The Expert grid would be a different category of run anyway, I'd think.

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
If you used the original International version (the Japanese one) and the standard grid, would that be directly comparable with the normal version or would the dfiferences make it a separate category?
Weegee Time
I would still call Expert Grid a separate category because of how much it changes the combat, but the two times would at least be comparable at that point.
Standard grid on the NTSC International edition would not be any different than the original NA version I don't think.  I don't really know anything about the Expert Grid, so I don't know how much time it would save, if any.
In one of his videos (see link at the bottom of the post) Blitzace states that to equal Essentia's time at the final save (10:01), he'd need to get to the final save in 11:54. So i wrote this equation:
(10:01-FMV)*6/5 = 11:54-FMV
Solving for FMV, I got a total FMV time of 36 minutes. Assuming the equation is correct, we now can easily convert between the two versions.
If I recall correctly, my time at the final save was around 12:00 (which is pretty weird, considering my run is Single Segment). I'll be away from home until the end of July so I can't check my saves. Hope someone finds this useful. I know I will, as soon as I can get a hold of my PS2 happy

Cara's time (final save) would be something around 12:12 (Again, assuming the equation is correct and I didn't mess up the math, as I just woke up 20 minutes ago ^^")

I found out you could interrupt the triggers for cutscenes in this game by talking to nearby npcs and if you time it perfectly, it'll allow you to move around, open the menu etc during them, even bypassing the cutscene entirely. I tested this all on an emulator first but for the third video Caracarn also tested and managed to get it working on a console.

Here are some videos:

Shelinda Skip

Clasko Skip

Jyscal Sphere Skip (on console, thanks Caracarn)

I have ideas for other areas in besaid, kilika and luca but I'm not sure if they'll save any time (need to test).

If there was a way to do something in the menu that affected the overworld then you might be able to interrupt any cutscene or event but it'll still have to be done perfectly ontop of the trigger.

For now this is limited by the fact you require an npc. Encounters do not seem to interrupt cutscenes, they merely delay them (like opening the menu over one) but you can actually buffer an input before an encounter/opening the menu and it'll happen after you close it. Not sure if you could use that anywhere but it's something I noticed.

Also, sometimes the jyscal sphere cutscene skip causes the audio to glitch out. I'm not sure why this happens but it might be due to the fact the game is trying to load 2 audio cues at the same time. It persists until the console is hard resetted it seems (ouch)

There are more locations than the ones shown in the videos above that this can happen. Mi'ihen is full of skips on basically every screen before Rin's Travel Agency. You can check them out nearer the end of this twitch recording (and the stuff i was messing around with): http://www.twitch.tv/eekcast/b/359483193
The Jyscal Sphere cutscene skip saves approximately 1 minute 10 seconds if you get it first try, and it will still save a significant amount of time even if it takes several times talking to Tromell (which is much more likely than accidentally triggering it normally, as long as you know where the trigger is).  The biggest issue is with the audio glitch, which doesn't make the game unplayable, but it definitely makes it very uncomfortable to listen to.

The other skips that have been found so far have much more difficult setups, and/or don't save enough time to be worth it.  More viable skips may be found later, however.

Aww, "Clasko Skip" got my hopes up that it would be "the" Clasko cutscene that we'd be skipping. Tongue

I think I may have figured out how to avoid the audio glitch. I believe it happens if you end up talking to Shelinda while Trommel is still talking, which could happen if you are mashing X. So I believe the key is to make sure you press X at the right time and then don't press it anymore. (until you are safely away from Shelinda).

This is probably better off for segmented but you can use Lucil's chocobo to boost you up the Djose Highroad (use the menu to buffer it or wiggle the analog stick up and down where she moves to). When you pass the priest you need to quickly position Tidus so he is directly in front of Lucil, since he no longer changes direction after that, and talk to the priest at the same time. Doing so allows you to entirely skip Djose Temple and obtaining Ixion after cancelling his dialogue boxes and obtaining the Hi-Potion (you'll miss out on a magic sphere however).

I am not sure if there are any consequences of doing this but I am thinking it might cut out summoning Ixion in the final Yu Yevon fight too - I need to progress up to that point to find out.
to correct my earlier post, the way to avoid the audio glitch on the jyscal sphere skip is to make sure you are not too close to the trigger when you do the skip. If you are on the closest step to the trigger when you do the skip, you will get the audio glitch.
Chubfish have you try the Djose skip on full speed yet?

It turns out if you interrupt certain triggers it'll store them. This is a pretty easy on to do on console; just cancel the text box before Tidus starts his door opening animation.

Basically this is showing that Tidus always tries to return to the door trigger that he passed over when another trigger occurs. Sadly, it isn't possible to get stuck on the walls near the Guado at the Thunder Plains entrance long enough to stay on the trigger you crossed or bypass it, however if you could cancel the text box earlier (japanese text?) it might be possible to entirely skip Guadosalam, provided there is a loading zone there, but it would have to be pretty close. There might be more areas or more triggers this works on, such as entrances in places like Besaid or other areas.

You could also do this the same way you do the Jyscal Sphere skip if the npcs dialogue box is very short.
Interestingly if you time cancelling the dialogue at the latest possible moment, you store opening the door, instead of walking towards the door. Has the effect of you entering that building whenever you next talk to an NPC, or enter a different building.

I don't think this can be useful anywhere, unless we can keep it stored when entering different areas.

Yeah I found that shortly after I put the video up so I didn't get a chance to record it; you actually have to press X on whilst inside the trigger for it to happen, but if it ever had a use i'd say try opening the door as you exit an area/enter another door (probably frame perfect) and see if anything happens but I have tried and couldn't get it working.

Triggers are always destroyed upon loading a new area as far as I know.
