Not to mention the fact that if you go for a No Encounters drop from Ghost, it must be for Tidus, Wakka, or Rikku due to the underwater section.
That makes it even worse.
The good news about it is that the character that kills the enemy is more likely to get the drop, at least, this is the experience of a lot of people that have done Solo Character Challenges for this game that post on the GameFAQs FFX board. I've done edit: 5 of the SCCs to completion as well(didn't do Rikku's due to how easy it would be, but I have a No Sphere Grid Rikku Only file in progress, and I didn't do Yuna Only because Aeon spam is boring.), and found this true in each of them.
Some people have also done some tests on this and found an approximate estimate of ~40%(character that killed the enemy that dropped equipment) and 60% for everyone else, with ~10% per character. This gives you an approximate 60% chance of getting a No Encounters armor for the one of the characters you want if you fight a Ghost and get the No Encounters drop.
Really, in the end SDA can take or leave my run... its of no concern to me... it's an added bonus if it was taken... but in the end, I am simply just running a game I enjoy... plus, I hope to achieve sub 10 hours Thanks for the heads up though, it is appreciated
On another note, if I leave Yuna alone, she gets steal and use as soon as I hit the travel agency to fight chocobo eater... (expert sphere grid... yuna is right beside them with a lvl 1 blocking the way)... it made Gui a lot faster... stole lots of bomb fragments (red element) and spammed them in the battle... Kimarhi had blizzard (doing about 20-30 damage less than his normal attacks) so hasted yuna, power break gui, got wakka to smack the head once... yuna works over the body, kimahri and lulu finished the head... he was finished before i even needed to worry about mp...
Well good luck with that. I do see a sub-10 run in the international version due to the expert grid. I don't know if Radix would want a regular sphere grid run though. As for No Encounters, make 2 saves before Defender X and have 1 go towards the cavern and see if you can fight a ghost within a certain amount of battles. Somewhere around 5 maybe. If it doesn't work, try reseting and see what you can do. If you decide to give up, just fight Geosgaeno for No Encounters. And make sure you get items for Trio.
I will be fighting Ghost no matter what... If I remember correctly, Doom works on Yu Yevon, doesn't it? So I'll use Ghost to learn Doom and pick up the No Encounters equip...
I'm at Djose right now, and wondering... I need to stop to get Stone Breath from the Basilisk as well as a few Ability Spheres... Is it worth the trouble to get a Stonetouch weapon and get a few levels off of Ochu (180 AP isn't it?) on Djose Highroad? If I can get Auron 60 levels before too late in the game, then I can give him hastega and use a white magic sphere to teach it to Tidus... hmmmm ... but 60 is a lot :-/
Edit: Never thought, but I can steal pertify grenades from them anyways... heh
So if you don't get that Purifying Salt, the grenades are something to fall back on. But encounters for the ghost in the first place (in my case anyway) are near impossible next to Tonberry monsters.
I think it would take too long to gain that many sphere levels.
You really should only be using the sphere grid whenever you have a chance to get any useful stats at the time(Strength, Agility, Magic, maybe HP.) or useful abilities.
Otherwise, play it as a No Sphere Grid game with the exception of the fact that you are using the sphere grid.
Also, Chocobo Wing > Hastega.
They both do the same thing, but Hastega delays your turn, while using Chocobo Wing will get you your next turn even more quickly.
Yeah, and like Enigma said, it needs to be for one of the three underwater characters as well... anyways, those grenades are working great thus far... I stocked up on 30 to see how that goes and how far it gets me... also, i figure I should be able to get hastega... leave tidus at steal/use and save all his levels... aurons path comes to a point where his and tidus' are really close... get auron close enough and use a friend sphere(Home)... use all of tidus' saved levels... hastega... how soon i will be able to get it is yet to be seen though...
Edit to above: I'm not gaining levels like leveling up, just mostly from bosses and such... but when I come across enemies that yield large amounts of AP with a quick end, I figure it's worth it (simply for hastega as its the only ability i need really out of the way)
Finished a trial run a while back (not much of a run after I got to Djose... I pretty much went slack and ended up with just over 20 hours >.<) and got familiar with the game again...
Got through the first segment and I think it's decent enough... but figured I'd post for feedback
main points... - talk to two groups for autographs... move on - just attack enemies - dont use Tidus' limit on boss - use save sphere for hp but not save - fight the fish (Tidus attacks first... only real time saver in this segment... makes fish attack 2 times instead of 5) - get flint and withered bouquet - save
my time was 25 minutes and about 20-25 seconds till the 26 mark...
any suggestions are welcome... and for the next segment...
- set config - use limit w/ tidus - steal 6 grenades from boss (in 6 turns or less) - use save sphere on the boat for heal/not save - no more than 1 random encounter in this segment - grenade forced battle - grenade boss... dont activate pinceer (long animation) - save unknown sea
not sure what my goal time is yet... I've only run it 4 times now ... I'd like to see 45... no more than 20 minutes on this segment... but not sure as to how feasable that is
How much of this run is gameplay and how much is cutscenes? If you're clearly under 7 hours of gameplay but bogged down in unskippable cutscenes, you could probably have a case for getting it accepted since the run playback on the site could cut the cutscenes(but don't cut them while recording).
The reason for the 7-hour limit isn't that they take too long to watch, though, it's because they take too long to process and encode. So removing the cutscenes after the run has already been captured probably won't save Nate any time.
It'd be better to save after you face the boss so you don't get unbelievably frustrated trying to manipulate the encounters. And because you can get into no encounters if you're lucky. You read the Speed FAQ of this on GameFAQs right?
Edit: Also, don't worry too much about the 7 hour limit. This game is very popular, 12 hours(KADFC's time, the time you should aim for or aim to beat) is a long time, but even Radix played this Final Fantasy game.
I would try and speedrun this game or do any of the gamefaq challenges, but I can't even start a new game. I guess that's the curse for my 350 hr 100% playthrough.

Yes, I've been keeping along with the speed faq... it has provided lots of valuable information, although some of it will be useless due to my using the international version (and expert sphere grid)
As for saving before/after Klikk, I used to save on the Al Bhed ship (after the boss), like you suggested... but I found getting grenades too frustrating... I found it very discouraging to get a decent run and have like 4 failed steals in a row (after the first success)... thanks for the suggestion though ^_^
and I'm no real expert but in the first segment I'd say there is maybe 10 minutes of game play of the 25...
Ultima Garden lists times of 9:39 and 9:43 for the final save (with and without HDD). You might want to check out the times of Yanagi, who has a completion in 9:58.
Comparing Yanagi's times with KADFC's, Yanagi finishes the blitzball match at 3:00, whereas KADFC finishes at 3:11. So, not too far behind at that point. When they reach the Djose Temple, though, Yanagi is at 4:21, and KADFC is at 4:52. So KADFC loses about 20 minutes during that time.
I posted a link to the site translated into English, but I got a reply "You are not allowed to use 'u' in this forum. 'u' fail at English".
Wow, thanks, thats really helpful... I'll definitly check that out
Do you know if they were using the normal sphere grid or expert? Because I can see where KADFC loses a lot of time at Gui compared to an expert sphere grid...
Not likely... Tidus' Flee will be pretty much required for a good portion of the game... in expert, Yuna gets steal/use (use is what I am really interested in) at the first Travel agency... Tidus gets steal/use a little before Rikku joins... stealing petrify grenades and using them in Home will make a few of the required battles a lot quicker... having party memebers with use (and steal) will make things a lot faster than if only Rikku has them...
there are a few minor things I also do with the sphere grid, but really, these are the big reasons I even bother...
nope... no additional summons are going to be chased after... if I was going to get any summon, Yojimbo would be the only one, but I'm not... I don;t think I'll have enough money to buy his help ^_^ Grand summoning for a zanmato would be cool though ^_^
