A single segment attempt of the longest run on SDA? Good grief...if you complete this, you will become a speed running legend.

(And no one will be allowed to use "the game's too long" as an excuse for segmenting anymore) Wink
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
A single-segment run where you beat Penance would be amazing, although that might be a bit difficult.

While we're on, has any actually mentioned a run of the International version (PAL's out because of the slow gameplay and ludicrous borders)?

She never said she was going to submit it to SDA.

Regardless, if she did this would definitely be amazing. I say record yourself during the 10+hours though and submit it as commentary. Could make it more interesting during the slow cutscenes.

That would take way too long for obvious reasons. Some discussion of it was done but that's it really. International would probably be a separate category from the NA version if only because of the Expert sphere grid differences from the regular one, but only if it actually does some sort of change in strategy to the run. Been a while since I've played the game and such so I forgot much of the expert sphere grid itself.

An International sphere grid run would be interesting.  The newer sphere grid starts everyone near the center, so you can give each character whatever role you want.  They also stay closer together on their paths, so you can cross skill sets more easily.

As far as disadvantages go, the International grid has far fewer nodes available to drop stats spheres.  This really doesn't affect a normal run, but if someone had the insanity to speed run to Penance, it could make an impact.  I'm not familiar with anything besides fighting him with maximum statistics.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
That's not the only difference. There's also Ribbon to consider, the upgraded version of Tornado and the differences in Aeon calculations, although they might be out of the way of a 'just beat Yevon' run.

Everything's better with Magitek
If I actually manage to make it through the game without a game over, I'll definitely submit it to SDA. Smiley

If I can borrow a capture card (like I did for the Mario marathon), then I'll use that when I stream; otherwise, I'll just use my webcam.  Regardless what I use for video, I'll use the microphone on my webcam, so you'll be able to hear me talking.  I'm planning to record the run on my DVD recorder and on ustream.  If there's some way to capture the audio from a ustream recording, I could submit that as commentary, but I don't know if that's possible.

I'm going to stream some practice this afternoon, probably starting around 5pm EST.

Edit: I decided to start streaming a little early.  Going now.

I'm streaming once again.  I want to try out some more strategies for Seymour Flux.

Everything's better with Magitek
Thanks to everyone who watched my stream last night.  It's been helpful to get suggestions, especially for the Seymour Flux battle.  I'm going to stream again tonight, probably starting around midnight EST.  I want to test some more things with Flux, and then I'll probably pick up where I left off last night with my latest practice run (just after Chocobo Eater).

Edit: Streaming now.

All right, I've finally got a time nailed down for my SS attempt.  I'll be starting on August 4 at 7pm EST.  You'll be able to watch the live stream here: http://www.finalfantasymarathon.webs.com/

Big thanks to Poxnor and Nitrodon, who have helped me improve my chances of beating Flux from 77% to 86%.  You guys are now my personal number cruncher minions. Wink
Everything's better with Magitek
I made a promo video to remind people about my upcoming SS attempt:

BTW, the clips from my segmented run, failed attempts at my segmented run, and my SS attempt from last year.  I was thinking that we should keep a running tally of how many times Rikku dies during this attempt. Wink
I suppose it's too much to ask for that they'll record what's going on since the whole things in the middle of the night...
Everything's better with Magitek
Just reminding everyone that my SS attempt starts tonight at 7pm Eastern time.  FFIX will also be going at the same time, and there will be some commentators (one of which is Poxnor, who'll be doing a raffle during his commentary shift).  We're raising money for the TSG HQ, but even if you're not interested in that, come and watch anyway. Smiley

Mystery: I won't be streaming on my channel, but I guess I could ask about recording the stream.  I will, however, definitely record my run on my DVD recorder, and if it turns out well, I'll upload it to Youtube.  Since I don't anticipate talking much during my run (I want to try to stay focused), hopefully you won't miss out on much if you're not able to watch it.
I'll take it! It's better than nothing.
Now, good luck on that run!

I'm really looking forward to this. Good luck Essentia!
Obscure games ftw
I just realized it's going on now, so far so good it seems.
Just wanted to post some encouragement - I got fairly burned out on this game writing FAQs for it some years ago, but watching this run live has filled me with nostalgia and warm fuzzies. Thanks for the entertainment. Smiley

Well, here's my report on my SS attempt from last night: The run ended due to a simple mistake on my part about halfway through.  When fighting Spherimorph, I accidentally had Rikku mix the magic sphere instead of the magic def sphere.  Consequently, I couldn't give that magic sphere to Yuna to boost the aeons' magic stat, which is what their overdrive damage is based on.  So when I fought Anima, Shiva's OD was doing 6600 damage instead of 9999, and she wasn't able to kill Anima before getting killed herself.  With Shiva gone, I really had no way to take out both Anima and Seymour, and so I got a game over.  I'd saved just before the Seymour fight, because I'd realized my mistake and knew there was a good possibility I'd lose, so I was able to try again.  The second time, I summoned Ifrit first so he could do some extra damage to Anima, and then used Shiva to finish the battle.  I was actually able to complete the rest of the game with no game overs, so I'm pretty sure that I've got a solid SS route.  If there's some extra time later in this week-long FF marathon, I might make another SS attempt.
Good luck!  I felt so bad for you when I watched that Sad

I hope you get another chance; I wasn't able to stay up even until Wendigo last time.

I think you should still submit the attempt, (unless you complete one later) because an SS of a game that long with only one death is amazing.  The Spyro run is ~2.5 hours with 4 deaths I believe, so 1 death in ~11 hours is pretty solid.
I don't believe she can.  Since she saved and died, thus going back to the main menu, it owuld be considered a segmented run.

As someone who has mocked Spherimorph's simplicity in just about every type of FFX run I've done, it amuses me that this is probably the only way it could mess up a run.

It was an entertaining run to be sure, and I'm glad I was able to catch most of it. The attempt was chock-full of all the types of crazy randomness you have to expect in a 12 hour run...enemy groups not being encountered when they needed to be, blitz ball hijinx, and of course the Magic Sphere mix-up, not to mention a fair amount of positive luck as well (especially when it came to winning raffles! Glad you finally get to play FF13!). All in all, Essentia did an impressive job of not only planning out this run, but also handling the situations well when things didn't go quite as planned. This was especially true with the Magic Sphere fiasco - it may have cost her a submittable run, but she still managed to find a work around and finish the run. I have to give my thanks to TSG for putting on the marathon, Poxnor for his great commentary and trivia contest (just remember, Adamantoise =/= Adamantortoise, and watch out for bosses that cast Float on you!), and of course Essentia for an absolutely fantastic run. I'll be eagerly awaiting the deathless attempt at Mikefest Wink

-For the record-
Approximate run length: 11 hours 52 minutes
Approximate time it took before Essentia began to lose her mind: 10 hours, 7 minutes.
Rikku's total death count: 34
Number of heads hit: 1

I've decided to make another SS FFX attempt tonight.  I'll start as soon as a stream in the marathon is available.
