give me your eyes!!!
Which is dependant on the extra time and the popularity of said game.
See GTA: San Andreas as an example.

This game is apparently very popular, and I think the length has already been debated and allowed, can't remember.
You got a deletion wish?
To quote SDAs FAQ page:
Quote:
The tentative limit for a run should be 7-hours, but if things are slightly longer and still interesting they will be posted.

The reason why GTA: SA is up is because 1) it's a popular game and 2) several runners expressed seeing a run of it.

w00t!

Just want to announce the only text skip for FF VIII ever (other than that other one I mentioned but that was based on memory alone, I was half paying attention at the time)! Or at least the only one I've ever seen. Damn I wish I had recorded it.

I was coming out of the capsule from space, and I could float around for a few seconds. So I decided to get into position to talk to the doctor, but I went too far because the controls are turned sideways and I went throught the door. So I skip the dialogue and also don't have to wait for the doctor to go into the medical room first. Saves about 20 seconds... Not much considering how long the game is, but hey, it's something.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Well let's hope this is still coming out
Nothin beats the classics....NES / SNES for life
I just did a for fun run-through of VIII. Finished the game full on high-level magic, with Lionheart and Exeter, Squall at level 33. Total time 16h42m. Then again, not trying for speed; but Ultimecia got completely owned. 180k Lionheart FTW.

Damn... Ok, I'm trying to do something in FF VIII (it's a secret ;)), but is there anything I can do in the game to prove that it's not done on an emulator? I've never played this game on an emulator so I don't know if there's something in it that's not possible, or doesn't happen in a legitimate game. I record using S-Video so the video quality will be very good and will make people think it's done on an emulator. Does anyone know what can or can't be done on one?

Well, there is no real way to tell in this case. Savestates are impossible to detect, and provide the most scope for cheating for this game. Luck manipulation/extremely fast buttonmashing could make it very easy to get consistent The Ends also, though I don't know the exact formula the game uses for that.
If it is on this site, then it's proof enough it wasn't done on an emulator. Although there were some close calls in the past, but none were actually submitted.
any luck yet?? I cant wait to Shocked if this is going to get up or not.. I really hope everything goes well and we can see this one!!
Chocobo Power!
Wow 16hr is pretty good. I bet I could beat that. I played FFVIII at least 20 times. Never gets boring.
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.

What about the start of disc 2? I *hate* that part.

Yup, I can't think of a duller Final Fantasy plot than this one. Although it does have one thing going for it...

SHOT INTO SPACE!!!

Dull? There are some problems that this game has, but I don't think dullness is one of them. It has one of the most whimsical plots I've ever seen in a game.

Story was fantastic. Still rates as my #1 ever.

Matter of fact it helped me with my life at the time. Met my partner during first time playing, now engaged six years later.

It's a very deep game, I think only a slim percentage of those that play it recognise that.

Hey, we all come from the same orphanage!

I like to think about the characters and setting thoroughly; I can really identify with the cast of FFIX for example. For me, FFVIII's people are just plain stereotypes. The only remotely complicated one of the bunch is Ellone, and the game shows you very little of her.

Aside from all this, what's happened to the run? Smiley

Oh noes, thems are fightin words!

Anyway, I'd like to point out, what isn't a stereotype? A personality that isn't common? Seriously, people in games now have to be so complex that you can't understand what the hell goes through their heads just so they wouldn't be a stereotype. Now, the stereotype in games is the aforementioned personality, complex, because it's so common.

Besides, the characters are deep if you follow what they do in the whole story. I thought it was interesting how they all had forgotten that they were in the same orphanage, but they still chose to keep the GFs at the cost of their memory. There's more I could say, but... meh...

And if anyone says that Squall is emo, I'll rip them a new one!

I haven't played VIII in a while, but I'll definitely do this run right after Kingdom Hearts.

People have said Squall's an emo? I have no idea how, he's nothing like one at all.

give me your eyes!!!
Since we're talking about random story experiences I'll add my opinions.

Of the Final Fantasy VII < I found this the worst.

Rather than beginning as a rebel terrorist organisation blowing up a reactor, or a group of vigilante thieves stealing a princess, or being warped back in time from a collapsing city, we begin at a school where the main character just got owned and is lying in the infirmary.

I never actually thought it got much more exciting; apart from the final mind-bending sequences, and the Ragnarok does make it all worth while. The Laguna and co. things were a bit meh, and things that could have been cool were slightly too drawn-out for it to be... fun.... I could give examples but I feel that most others don't share this opinion.

As for the fighting system extracting spells thingy - I hated it. And that gives me even more desire to watch a run because I could never fully get the hang of it!

Great work on this darkwasabi! Hope it goes well.

p.s. Squall would be an Emo in our world but he has a frigging Gunblade so he dodges that bullet nicely.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
i think FF8 is 2nd best IMO... what lets it down is the rediculous plot 'twists'...

'hey, i just remembered, we all grew up together in the same orphanage'

'sh*t, rinoa, we're gunna die.. you've got no oxygen left in your spacesuit and haven't had any for the last 5 minutes durin this cutscene.... hey - there's a random flying ship! wow, we've just managed to land on it and you're STILL alive!'

but yeah.. the plot is interesting IMO.. there's a lot to discuss and think about... it took me a few plays to form my own ideas... and then there's the whole... is rinoa ultimecia thing... i think it says a lot about loss and such...

i personally found FF9 quite boring... it was simiar to the earlier FF's with storyline... not much of a deep plot as far as i'm aware and quite.. erm... cheesy? all princesses and knights and stuff... it felt like it was aimed at 6-year olds.. and 10 can never live up to any of the rest cos there's no frickin world map!!!

anyway... so the speedrun hasn't been started yet? but the routes all planned an stuff?

Out of curiosity, what do you have planned after this? darkwasabi == quality, I must know.

Maybe for a FF game, and if you exclude 9, 10-2, and MQ. Really, as far as RPGs in general go, this would fall well on the non-whimsical side of average.

Man, this thread page is... nostalgic. It's like being on a whole different alternate message board, like gamefaqs. Maybe the next person will suggest typing your name with your elbows! Tongue

Do you think so? I can think of other whimsical games (Earthbound), but I can't think of many..

Of course, "whimsical" isn't a very precise word. Oh, I don't know how to describe this... but where most games have their plot pieces connected with standard logic, FFVIII was built on dream logic. If you stand back and look at it rationally, it doesn't make sense, but when you're in the midst of it, it makes perfect sense. That was one of the most interesting things about the game, I thought.

Glad to know people like my stuff. Cheesy
Currently I'm not just doing nothing, I actually am working on KH. This current segment was really pissing me off(the route I had was very tricky, but it's the fastest). Right now I'm at the first save in TT.

I was thinking maybe XII if it's short enough... and if I can actually get it... Or KH2 if rudyxx doesn't get it done or if it's not fast enough(I'm sure he's really good, but I saw the KH2 run on Ultimagarden being 5 hours while his is over 8. It's on easy, but 3 hours?)... and if I can actually get it too... I'm broke... :bawl:

Ah, I took "whimsical" as more like "carefree" or "light-hearted." Well, I see what you're saying, but most people took it as poor writing (i.e. plot holes) instead of a game where it was clearly intentional, like Killer7. I'm not big on things needing to be clearly defined or make sense (I love David Lynch for example), and I like FF8 more than 7 or 9, but I think I can't argue with the majority here.

Sticking with RPGs (because you could call a game like Katamari Damacy or Viewtiful Joe whimsical, but it's not like they really have much plot anyway), BoF5 is similar (maybe the reverse?) in that the first time through the game, you can't see all the cutscenes, and they get unlocked on subsequent playthroughs. So the first time you only understand the basic level of the plot and have a tough time figuring out the auxiliary stuff, but eventually most of it is evident. And Star Ocean 3 has something similar with different levels of logic and sense, but I can't really say anything without spoiling it.

darkwasabi, since you brought up rudyxx (I know about him somewhat because of a different site), I noticed something kinda interesting. Me, him, and say nikuvillin... we all like RPGs, yet within the genre, we all like completely different games, to the point where we never really post in the same threads.
Sleeping Terror
Well, this is starting to get a bit off-topic... but this is why I've never been able to associate "whimsical" with "carefree" or "light-hearted".
