timber mechanic help time saving yah?

Timber mechanic?  Do you mean Timber Maniacs?  How would that save time?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
He might be using the speed guide at gamefaqs, which is obviously outdated.  No offense, Mr. Guest.

secret of mana master.
so, how are we doing on the run. i'm to lazy to read the whole topic. gomemisy.
King of hearts
Well, two things are now prolonging me from starting the run.  One is Kingdom Hearts 2 and SW:KOTOR, and the other is that I've been sick for the past week and I'm still not feeling too good to do something like a speed run. Plus I want to know what Wow was talking about with the Timber mechanic.  I've looked through a bunch of guides and didn't find anything.
Amoebe
I assume the Timber Mechanic remark is just a troll. Ignore it. Timber Maniacs aren't gonna help in a speedrun at all, there's just no gain. Only extra information about Laguna, but that doesn't help one iota.

are you just doing a quick run though or a 100% run?
secret of mana master.
um.... i wonder how are you going to do the beginning part. about what spells are you going to draw and how far are you going to level up. at least for the summons (GF's, edelons, espers, whatever) are you going to level shiva up, get this one abilty from that thunder bird (i forgot the name) and..... what was it, making 100 blizzards into 10 blizzera's. or are you going to skip all that and go straight to ifrit. its been a while since i play this game so i don't remember that much. so i was just wondering, how are you going to do the beginning part?
King of hearts
Heh 8:47 sounds like it's slow, but believe me, it's very optimized.  This is just a plain speed run, the Omega section is separate.  Besides, if it were a 100% run, it would take ages to get all cards/items/GFs, nowhere near 9 hours.

About the beginning, I had a lot of the beginning explained in an unfinished FAQ I was going to make of this game back when I thought it wouldn't be accepted here.  Since then, it's been lost in time(reformat).  I never draw any magics from enemies throughout the course of the game.  It's faster/easier to refine items.  And I only summon once in the run, it's against the Granaldo and 3 Raldo battle since they attack very fast after Granaldo is dead from Renzo.  It's faster to kill them with one long summon than many quick attacks.

I've explain more of the main points throughout this thread.  I know it's pretty long to look through, but I'm too lazy to repeat stuff.
if darkwasabi (or someone) did a perfect run which was like 8:15, and later someone found a way to skip all FMVs in the game, and he got sub 8h, but his run would suck otherwise, would that piece of shit run replace the 8:15 run only because it's faster because it skipped the fucking FMVs?

give me your eyes!!!
Well that run would breach the 'the run has to be good' rule set to verifiers. I suppose it's quite a grey area but if it did and the trick was legal darkwasabi (or someone) would most likely wish to utilise this new trick to beat the new time.

It hasn't happened though, no need to be angry...

Won't happen, the game's been out for years and there isn't even a remote sign of skipping FMVs.  Plus, if it were discovered, it would probably break one of SDA's rules.  And if someone did manage to beat the run like that, I'd do the run again anyway.
where can the 8:47 run be downloaded?

As I said before:

Do you mean my VIII run?  I just directly gave it to sdafan because he was willing to help count the names.  It's my old run that has an inconsistent segment which isn't acceptable on SDA.  Plus there's no audio for almost all of them.

The new run will be in very high quality due to getting an S-Video cable, recording at 640x480, using the PS2's smooth texture filter, and better encoding practices now with h.264.  Plus I plan on adding subtitled commentary for it.

Just be patient.  Looks like there are going to be a bunch of Final Fantasy speed runs coming out not too long from now.

I wouldn't necessarily say that about my FFIX run...It's going pretty slowly right now.

Just wondering, what difference does using the smooth texture filter make?

It blends in some of the textures to make it look nice and smooth instead of blocky.  It looks better than without it.  Try it on and off in the world map, that's where it's most noticeable.

Hmmm, sounds very, very tasty. I love FF series (it's just so simple fun while playing this games) and now, such a great recording on a way. I waited for this for a looong time. Crossing my fingers for good luck with run.

Just keep the news up, so there is sign, that project is still on the move.
darkwasabi. did you know that you can avoid random encounters by constantly tapping the menu button? it doesn't work on the world map though, since squall's movement stops when you put on the menu, so there's no time to move during the fade-in/fade-out. but it works everywhere else.

so many subtitles would probably be hard to add. audio commentary with mic should be easier..... even if english is not your first language.

Good thing I didn't get too far.  I'll try and see how I can implement it, if it does save time.  World map encounters don't matter because those are random, so I don't get into any.  Everywhere else, the encounters are not random, so maybe I can just start using that at the parts where I know I get into encounters.  Where did you hear about this, and why didn't anyone mention this before?
Hello!
Simple question directs to a simple answer : we didnt know until now.

Iam kind of new on this topic. I would like to know where you are now?

Did you already start doing segments? Are they already hosted on youtube or rapidshare or even filefront?

When do you think the run will be finished

No excuses!  I blame you all for my ignorance about this!

Second segment...  Yes, after over a year I made it to the second segment!  I'm just that good. 8)

I'd rather the run be watched as a whole instead of by segments.  Yeah, throw food at me if you want.

Well, I'm at the second segment after over a year...  I'd say pretty soon!
Seriously though, I want to get it done as soon as I can.  When it will be finished is hard to say, but I will get it finished.

About the menu trick, I just tried a small part in the Fire Cavern and it doesn't negate the upcomming battle, it prolongs it to come up the moment when you start walking normally.  In this run I'll only keep segments that escape from battle almost immediately, so each encounter will last about 20 seconds.  In the Fire Cavern, it's much longer to use the trick than not to since I start the battle with Ifrit at 8:27 normally, but with the trick it started at 8:16.  The walk back is much longer from where you get into an encounter, so I'll lose much more time there.

I can however use this to my advantage because there were some parts where I'd get into an encounter right when I would make it back to a normal area.  But the thing is that I don't know how that would affect future non-random battles.  Every time I went through this run I would get into the exact same battes at the exact same places, so with this I'd have to check future areas to see how it's affected.

Where did you hear about this,

i just found it when playing the game.

to have use of the menutrick maybe you have to know the future, and the exact amount of steps until next fight. like in a TAS.

in a TAS they sometimes push the menu button to re-randomize monsters and the amount of steps to next fight.

but i'm curious. i think you said before that you only need to unseal one ability in ultimecias castle (limitbreak). but if you don't unseal resurrection and item, how will squall survive all the fights? if he dies, he can't be brought back to life without the resurrection (and item or magic) unsealed.

will you take all drawable GFs?

As I said before, I know exactly where the fights start, but going into the menu only prolongs the battle from happening.  The moment I took a normal step, I got into the battle I was supposed to have.  This was after two screen changes, so I can't just do it for one part, I'd have to continue to do it until I leave the random encounter area.  Going into the menu doesn't reset it.

The only attack I need to worry about is Shockwave Pulsar, with that I need to boost my HP and Spr as much as I can.  In my 8:47 run, Irvine had 68 Spr and 2979 HP, and he survived it with 283 HP.  In that run, I got too frustrated trying to do it with only one ability unsealed, since you also need Squall and Irvine fight at the start, so I went and unlocked Item so I could use a Hero.  For it to work, you have to get lucky enough so that none of the other forms do enough damage to Squall so he won't survive Shockwave Pulsar.  Ironically, that segment actually got lucky like that, but I had already ulocked Item...

What you do is go in with a critical Irvine and fully healed Squall with high Spr.  Irvine will kill off the first two forms and die in Shockwave Pulsar, then Squall will be in low HP to finish off the other two forms.

The final form always starts with Hell's Judgement, which leaves your party with 1 HP.  That gives me enough time to unleash 2 Renzokukens, attack until she says "And..." and attack one last time.  The final form is easy, you have plenty of time before Apocolypse because she has to Draw Apocolypse.  You might get unlucky and see an Ultima instead, but that isn't too common.

That menu thing doesn't work; I believe he read that directly off the Earthbound TAS or something, and everybody knows techniques that work in one game work in others!!!

Smiley Sorry.

but there's still no use of it because even if you do that, you'd just prolong the fight into the next random encounter area, right?
